To maximize the rewards of SIMRAN you must watch your actions and reactions during the day and night. The divine laws laid out by the GURBANI tell you to become a truthful person, to live truthfully, to act and react truthfully, practice truth, abide by truth and serve the truth. All the non-truthful actions-and reactions –ASAT KARAM – are carried under the influence of Five Thieves (PANJ DOOT) : KAAM – Lust, KRODH – Anger, LOBH – Greed, MOH – Selfish Love & Attachments AHANKAAR– Self Pride. These Five Thieves reside inside your body and steal your lifeforce, you inner spiritual energy known as AMRIT. And they steal God’s NAAM the source that generates your inner Amrit. eis dhaehee a(n)dhar pa(n)ch chor vasehikaam krodhh lobh mohu aha(n)kaaraa || Within this body dwell the five thieves: sexual desire, anger, greed, emotional attachment and egotism. a(n)mrith loottehi manamukh neheeboojhehi koe n sunai pookaaraa || They plunder the Amrit Nectar, but the self-willed manmukh does not realize it; no one hears the screams. a(n)dhhaa jagath a(n)dhh varathaaraabaajh guroo gubaaraa ||2|| The world is blind, and its dealings are blind as well; without the Guru, there is only pitch darkness. ||2|| SGGS 600 pa(n)ch chor mil laagae nagareeaa raam naam dhhan hiriaa || The five thieves join together and plunder the body-village, stealing the wealth of the Lord’s Name. SGGS 1178 KAAM Lust, resides in the lower portion of your body around the sexual organs. KRODH Anger resides in the stomach area. LOBH AND MOH reside in the chest-heart area. And AHANKAAR self pride, the biggest enemy, lives in your head and the most difficult to control. A normal person’s daily actions and reactions are controlled by these PANJ DOOTS. The mind of a normal person works under the direct control of PANJ DOOTS. Your past life has a very big influence on how you conduct yourself in your day-to-day activities. And your this life’s character is greatly influenced by all the previous lives. The idea is to get yourself away from the influence of your past life’s and previous lives’ in your daily conduct to be free from the control of the PANJ DOOTS. This is the most difficult task to accomplish, it is easy to do SIMRAN but you need to bring these enemies of yours under your control – pa(n)ch dhooth thudhh vas keethae kaal ka(n)ttak maariaa || Through You, we subdue the five demons of desire, and slay Death, the torturer. SGGS 917 This is how you are going to win over your mind, man jeethae jag jeethiaa jaa(n) thaebikhiaa thae hoe oudhaas ||2|| Conquering the mind, one conquers the world, and then remains detached from corruption. ||2|| SGGS 1103 The most difficult war is to win over these PANJ DOOTS, and how you will accomplish that? 1. AHANKAAR – SELF PRIDE Let us consider the most difficult and the most distracting one first– AHANKAAR self pride. This is the biggest enemy standing in the way of the Human Soul (JEEV ATMA) on its spiritual journey to become a Supreme Soul (PARAM-ATMA). The distance between the PARAM-ATMA and JEEV ATMA is the creation of the man himself due to his ego and pride (HAUME –AHANKAAR). mehalaa 2 || Second Mehl: houmai eaehaa jaath hai houmai karam kamaahi || This is the nature of ego, that people perform their actions in ego. houmai eaeee ba(n)dhhanaa fir fir joneepaahi || This is the bondage of ego, that time and time again, they are reborn. houmai kithhahu oopajai kith sa(n)jam eih jaae || Where does ego come from? How can it be removed? houmai eaeho hukam hai paeiai kirath firaahi || This ego exists by the Lord’s Order; people wander according to their past actions. houmai dheeragh rog hai dhaaroo bhee eis maahi || Ego is a chronic disease, but it contains its own cure as well. kirapaa karae jae aapanee thaa gur kaasabadh kamaahi || If the Lord grants His Grace, one acts according to the Teachings of the Guru’s Shabad. naanak kehai sunahu janahu eith sa(n)jam dhukh jaahi ||2|| Nanak says, listen, people: in this way, troubles depart. ||2|| SGGS 466 vaddeha(n)s mehalaa 3 || Wadahans, Third Mehl: houmai naavai naal virodhh hai dhue n vasehi eik t(h)aae || Ego is opposed to the Name of the Lord; the two do not dwell in the same place. houmai vich saevaa n hovee thaa man birathhaa jaae ||1|| In egotism, selfless service cannot be performed, and so the soul goes unfulfilled. ||1|| har chaeth man maerae thoo gur kaasabadh kamaae || O my mind, think of the Lord, and practice the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. hukam ma(n)nehi thaa har milai thaavichahu houmai jaae || rehaao || If you submit to the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, then you shall meet with the Lord; only then will your ego depart from within. ||Pause|| houmai sabh sareer hai houmai oupath hoe || Egotism is within all bodies; through egotism, we come to be born. houmai vaddaa gubaar hai houmai vich bujh n sakai koe ||2|| Egotism is total darkness; in egotism, no one can understand anything. ||2|| houmai vich bhagath n hovee hukam n bujhiaa jaae || In egotism, devotional worship cannot be performed, and the Hukam of the Lord’s Command cannot be understood. houmai vich jeeo ba(n)dhh hai naam n vasai man aae ||3|| In egotism, the soul is in bondage, and the Naam, the Name of the Lord, does not come to abide in the mind. ||3|| naanak sathagur miliai houmai gee thaasach vasiaa man aae || O Nanak, meeting with the True Guru, egotism is eliminated, and then, the True Lord comes to dwell in the mind|| sach kamaavai sach rehai sachae saev samaae ||4||9||12|| One starts practicing truth, abides in truth and by serving the True One gets absorbed in Him. ||4||9||12|| SGGS 560 One thing more to understand to make it easier to understand is that KRODH anger and AHANKAAR self-pride are complementary to each other. AHANKAAR causes KRODH. KRODH comes because of AHANKAAR. So if you are able to over power AHANKAAR then KRODH will diminish automatically. The opposite of AHANKAAR is the utmost humbleness-NIMRATA, and this is a very powerful weapon to kill AHANKAAR. In order to kill your HAUME EGO try following things: · Cleaning of your kitchen utensils – seva starts from your home. · Cleaning of your family’s shoes – seva starts from serving your own family members first. · Do DANDAOT BANDHNA (prostrating to SGGS) when you go to the gurudwara – KAR DANDAOT PUN WADDA HAI, this produces wonderful results. · Clean langar’s utensils, no match with this seva. · Clean gurudwara. · Dust sangat’s shoes, does wonders. · AND IF YOU REALLY WANT TO EARN IT FAST DUST SANGAT’S SHOES WITH YOUR BEARD OR HAIR (ego women’s pony tail). Believe it, if you do these things you will definitely feel the difference within your self instantaneously. These have been very successfully experienced by this servant (sevak) of yours and some of the other gursikhs known to this sevak. It does wonders, just do it and reap the rewards instantaneously. The more the NIMRATA the more the AMRIT. SAT GURUS were extremely humble – they were servants of Gods servants (DASSAN DAAS). The SUPREME SPIRITUAL STATUS (PARAM PADVI) is to become DASSAN DAAS. So you have to bring this attribute in yourself, you have to become DASSAN DAAS then only the MASTER will be pleased at you. Consider everybody else is higher than you, be they your spouse, son, daughter, father, mother, your subordinate, your servant. You are the lowest of the lowest of the lowest, you have to become so low that you want to be lower than the a worm in manure (BISHTA KA KIDA). This is what DASSAN DAAS is. sagal purakh mehi purakh pradhhaan || Among all persons, the supreme person is the one saadhhasa(n)g jaa kaa mittai abhimaan || who gives up his egotistical pride in the Company of the Holy. aapas ko jo jaanai neechaa || One who sees himself as lowly, sooo ganeeai sabh thae oochaa || shall be accounted as the highest of all. jaa kaa man hoe sagal kee reenaa || One whose mind is the dust of all, har har naam thin ghatt ghatt cheenaa || recognizes the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in each and every heart. man apunae thae buraa mittaanaa || One who eradicates cruelty from within his own mind, paekhai sagal srisatt saajanaa || looks upon all the world as his friend. sookh dhookh jan sam dhrisattaethaa || One who looks upon pleasure and pain as one and the same, naanak paap pu(n)n nehee laepaa ||6|| O Nanak, is not affected by sin or virtue. ||6|| SGGS 266 2. MOH – SELFISH LOVE AND ATTACHMENT What is the difference between MOH and LOVE? If you love your neighbour’s daughter as much as much as you love your own daughter, then you can say you truly LOVE your daughter free from attachments and expectations. If you love you daughter more than you love any other child than that is MOH – selfish love. MOH is being selfish. When a person only thinks about their blood relations, and don’t care about everybody else. MOH is the root cause of all the family disputes, the very concept of the so called family is due to MOH. mithhiaa than dhhan kutta(n)b sabaaeiaa|| False are body, wealth, and all relations. SGGS 268 The real family is where there is only LOVE and nothing else but pure LOVE for each other. The key is to love all his creations equally, your love for AKAL PURAKH is not a true love if you don’t love all HIS creations as much as you LOVE HIM. You need to develop a SINGLE VISION – EK DRISHT – TO SEE EVERY ONE WITH ONE EYE, ALL ARE EQUAL: sabh eaek dhrisatt samath kar dhaekhaisabh aatham raam pashhaan jeeo || They look upon all with equality, and recognize the Supreme Soul, the Lord, pervading among all. SGGS 446 You need to bring this great attribute in your character, this will inculcate in you the sense of doing good to others, helping the poor, and so on and eventually your heart centre (HIRDEY) will become a philanthropist’s heart (PARUPKARI HIRDEY). It is very difficult to leave your own dear and near family and start caring for others, so how do you accomplish it ? Start from your family. Don’t see them as your family members anymore. See everybody in the family as SANGAT. Now the rules will change, all the rules applicable to the SANGAT will be applied to your family members. Help your family members as you would help the SANGAT with an atitude of service (SEVA BHAVNA). Treat your family members as you would treat the SANGAT. In this way your house will become a DHARAM SHAAL meaning "A PLACE FULL OF LOVE AND SACRIFICE AND SEVA, A GURUDWARA" ghar ghar a(n)dhar dhharamasaal hovaikeerathan sadhaa visoaa|| Everyhome has become a place of religion where God’s praises are always sung. Bhai Gurdas Var 1 This was our GREAT GURU NANAK DEV JI’S dream, don’t you think that will start to come true. This way you will start to realize and see GOD in all your family members. You will stop thinking badly about your family members. The family disputes will start to disappear. Your home will become a real SWEET HOME. This will turn your home into a heaven. If you are the only one on this path, please start following these steps, and others in the family will start to follow you slowly and slowly everybody will become a new person, full of love, sacrifice and seva bhawna. And you will start moving to become EK DRISHT, SINGLE VISION AND LOVE THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE, and on a path of PARUPKAR. Again believe it, and do it, it works, it has worked in our families, it will work in your family as well. 3. LOBH – GREED The next enemy in the hierarchy is LOBH – GREED to own and possess everything. There is a part of the human brain that contains a reptilians brain. That reptillian brain in us creates the "grab and run" mentality. MAYA is the evil behind the greedy nature of a man. Man wants to become rich by hook or crook, adopting bad or good means, bribery, dishonesty, cheating, hiding, lying, killing and all kind of bad deeds. MAYA makes a man do all unimaginably bad acts to make him rich. Has anybody taken any MAYA along with him when he died ? No. Then why do we all run after MAYA? Because this is another one of the PANJ DOOTS, that stands in the way in the path to spirituality. So how do we get a control over this evil force of MAYA? With Truth and Contentment (SAT SANTOKH). thhaal vich thi(n)n vasathoo peeou sath sa(n)thokh veechaaro || Upon this Plate, three things have been placed: (SAT SANTOKH) Truth Contentment and Contemplation. SGGS 1429 SAT SANTOKH is the strongest weapon that will kill all urges to make MAYA by bad means. The only good way to do so is by a honest job. Be contented with what you have. Never long for more, whatever is in store for you will automatically come to you, just be truthful and honest in your day today actions and while doing your job, use good means to advance your career goals, HE will surely help you. Give DASWANDH – one tenth of your earnings to your Guru, Gurudwara or donate to the poor people, to the homeless, feed the birds and animals, to the sick people, orphans, and other needy people. Giving DASWANDH is mandatory, it is the DIVINE LAW, if you want to get a control over MAYA then you have to do it: than man dhhan sabh soup gur ko hukam ma(n)niai paaeeai || Surrender body, mind, wealth, and everything to the Guru; obey the Order of His Will, and you will find Him. SGGS 918 If you really want to do it fast (and you have never given daswand before) then CALCULATE YOUR NET WORTH AND DONATE ONE TENTH OF THE NET WORTH FOR A WORTHY CAUSE. The MAYA will start serving you instead of you running after MAYA. The greed will disappear and you will always be in SAT SANTOKH. 4. KAAM- the sexual desire, lust. The next enemy is the KAAM- the sexual desire, lust. As long as sexual activity and thoughts are limited to your spouse it is not considered to be spiritually damaging. However as soon as you step out of that boundary, then you have been overpowered by this big enemy of yours. This kind of a desire is very deadly and NAAM doesn’t work with it. Instead of seeing others as potential sex partners, see them as a sister, daughter a mother or brother, father and son. par thria roop n paekhai naethr || (The saint is the one) whose eyes do not gaze upon the beauty of others’ wives SGGS 274 akhee soothak vaekhanaa par thria par dhhan roop || The impurity of the eyes is to gaze upon the beauty of another man’s wife, and his wealth. SGGS 472 This one is not as hard to control, call every woman you meet or see as bhehn ji, mata ji, or beti. If you get a lousy feeling, a lustful feeling in your inside when you see some body else, then look at her feet, say SAT NAAM WAHEGURU FIVE TIMES, bow to her her and ask her for her forgiveness inside your heart. Accept your misdeed right away and you will be pardoned by the GOD. Slowly and slowly you will start to realize and feel the difference in your attitude, and your vision will change, you will start to realize they are your sisters, mothers and daughters. In spite of your best efforts, there is always a strong possibility of you being hit by one or more of these BIG FIVE ENEMIES of yours every now and then, so what do you do to encounter them: THE STRONGEST WEAPON IS – "SAT NAAM WAHE GURU", SO SAY "SAT NAAM WAHE GURU" FIVE TIMES, THIS WILL CRUSH THE HEAD OF YOUR ENEMY RIGHT AWAY and you will be relieved of that moment. The next thing is for keeping your accounts of good and bad actions (CHITER GUPT) clean all the time we will request you to perform the following ardaas as many time as many you can during the day and night: AASI BEANT PAAPI HAAN, PAKHANDI HAAN, KAAMI HAAN, KRODHI HAAN, LOBHI HAAN, MOHI HAAN, AHANKAARI HAAN, we accept all our mis deeds-GUNAH, AASI GUNEH GAAR HAAN KOOD KAPTI HAAN, LOON HARAMI HAAN, KIRPA KAR KE SANOO BAKHASH DEY. “I am an endless sinner. A hypocrite. Lustful. Angry. Greedy. Attached and proud. I accept all my misdeeds. I am a great offender. Full of falseness and take what belongs to others. O Lord show your mercy and kindness and please forgive me.” This is basically accepting all your mis deeds, an open confession to confess all your sins, and once you confess them your sins are pardoned by HIM, since he is very very kind. Believe in it, it does work and it works great, repeat it every 10-15 minutes during the day at least. Slowly and slowly when you start to have control on these five enemies, your frequency of this ardaas will automatically go down, and eventually it will be reduced to almost none, when you will become completely truthful person. If you really want to do it the fast way then standup in the full congregation and accept all your misdeeds. Repeat the above prayer, it will do wonders to you, you will just be cleaned very quickly from inside, if you do it repeatedly in SANGAT then the result will be unbelievable, so beloved ones of the Guru (Guru Ke Pyareo), pick up your courage and do it, it will boost your spirituality at a supersonic speed.

Mata jee was the daughter of the Qazi. The Qazi had got into an argument with Srimaan Baba Budha jee regarding an issue. During the course of the conversation, he made a comment, saying that I will become Maharaaj's son-in-law to get the money (or something). Baba jee replied back by commenting that Maharaaj will become your son-in-law. Now, Baba jee was a Gurmukh Brahamgyani and his bachan was bound to come to fruition. Hence, Mata Kaulan jee always loved Maharaaj as her husband, which implied that Maharaaj was like a son-in-law of the Qazi. Bhul chuk maaf

If I remember it correctly both the Chibbar writers quote this verse in a context of the Khalsa having to destroy their enemies. Also followed by the Sagal malech karo ranghata

Good points there. I would also extend this to the 5 chor that fight Sikhs as well.

ਸਿਖ੍ਯ can possible refer to ਸਿੱਖਿਆ which can mean education/knowledge. ਅਸਿੱਖਿਤ can possibly refer to illiteracy or ignorance. Another possible interpretation of the verse above: Protect the knowledge (like spiritual) and destroy illiteracy/ignorance. Bhul chuk maaf

the "ਅ" at the beginning of the word also describe s the opposite/opposition. ie ਸੁਰ\ਅਸੁਰ Devta and Demons who were always at war with each other. I think here ਅਸਿਖ੍ਯ could mean someone/peoples who were opposed to the Sikhs as a people/panth.

Meditation sometimes creates more sexuality in you as energy is generated and it tends to move downwards towards sex centre. Mind plays a critical role in it .It only knows one passage i.e sexual passage. What should be done .Just be aware of it.Be aware of all the sexual images,X rated thoughts .Be aware of them, but do not do anything about the situation; just be aware of it. The sexual passgae cannot operate without your support. So do not cooperate with it, just be aware of it. You have just been aware of what is happening to your mind, to your body. You are just aware; then energy is conserved. Then the quantity of the energy becomes more and more intense and an upward thrust becomes necessary. Now the energy will go upward; by its very force, a new passage will be thrown open. All chakras will be awakened and you will experience the ultimate divine .

Addictions A longstanding compulsive behavior pattern may be called an addiction, and an addiction lives inside you as a quasientity or sub personality, an energy field that periodically takes you over completely. It even takes over your mind, the voice in your head, which then becomes the voice of the addiction. It may be saying, “You've had a rough day. You deserve a treat. Why deny yourself the only pleasure that is left in your life?” And so, if you are identified with the internal voice due to lack of awareness, you find yourself walking to the fridge and reaching for that rich chocolate cake. At other times, the addiction may bypass the thinking mind completely and you suddenly find yourself puffing on a cigarette or holding a drink. “How did that get into my hand?” Taking the cigarette out of the packet and lighting it, or pouring yourself a drink were actions performed in complete unconsciousness. If you have a compulsive behavior pattern such as smoking, overeating, drinking, TV watching, Internet addiction, or whatever it may be, this is what you can do: When you notice the compulsive need arising in you, stop and take three conscious breaths. This generates awareness. Then for a few minutes be aware of the compulsive urge itself as an energy field inside you. Consciously feel that need to physically or mentally ingest or consume a certain substance or the desire to act out some form of compulsive behavior. Then take a few more conscious breaths. After that you may find that the compulsive urge has disappeared for the time being. or you may find that it still overpowers you, and you cannot help but indulge or act it out again. Don't make it into a problem. Make the addiction part of your awareness practice in the way described above. As awareness grows, addictive patterns will weaken and eventually dissolve. Remember, however, to catch any thoughts that justify the addictive behavior, sometimes with clever arguments, as they arise in you mind. Ask yourself, Who is talking here? And you will realize the addiction is talking. As long as you know that, as long as you are present as the observer of your mind, it is less likely to trick you into doing what it wants.

I have been a lonley person since last 13 years. I have no social life. I never go out to clubs pubs etc. At the local gurdwara i have always get annoyed cos the ladies or sewadar make unpleasent comments and i don't like going there cos of it. I mean these lustful thoughts come and go and they don't distrub me 24/7. Luckly i keep my full kes bread and don't eat meat or alchool. I do try to do paath but i get critised for it as my mum sister say it is making me more angry hate filled egostic etc.

Bro, try to do Sangat of Gurmukhs (at Gurudwaras or elsewhere) as much as you can and start spending more time on Naam Simran, listening to Katha/kirtan, etc. When one rises in spirituality, one starts to develop love towards people, irrespective of whether you get along with them or not. Along with that, one also develops his ability to ignore things which annoy you. Also, you might notice that once you start following Rehat Maryada (Sikh codes of conduct) and deal with people based on it, most people will start liking you or at least won't hate you. Are you in Canada? Bhul chuk maaf

Bro thanks for the link You are right i will look into it. Also i don't have a good relationship with my disfunctional family. I also get angry quite quickly as well. It is like i am meant to be felt like i have no voice. Or that my views are not valued. I give a example i have a few people i really don't get along with at all believe me via family. Everytime i see one of them or vists at home. I expected to behave in a very friendly way even though after he or she has left my parents make big talks oh he said this she said that. And if i don't talk in their way i get curcifed as soon as the person has left. For these reasons i get angry and my mum is the worest one it is like she makes herself a victim in all of this. She makes my life hell over these people saying oh you don't know when we might need somebody. I believe in Waheguru alone. These circle of abuse from home has made me view girls as escorts. Like when going for aranged marriage a boy is asked his wages job education etc. This nasty views by families have created this idea or thought about escorts. I have been through a horrible childhood at school and watched abuse at home. Everytime i would make a mistake as all kids would do. I would be given hell. Mum always says "if you are wrong i will not take your side." "I don't want to make you a theif criminal" This has made me feel horrible as i have seen kids and family members who despite being wrong, their mum and dad don't say nothing. This has created more hate inside me and towards people i don't get along with. And nowdays it is soo much tension at home and i stay away from they in my room whenever my parents are at home.

Try to follow these tips (from another topic) below. They might help you. First and Foremost - Keep doing Ardas infront of Maharaaj to assist you in fighting this demon (lust). Keep your mind occupied with resourceful activities. In your case, focus hard on your career growth. Diet control - Avoid spicy food, Garlic, eating from outside, etc. Before you go to sleep, recite Sri Kirtan Sohela Sahib jee 5 times, instead of one. Do jaap of Rakheya day shabad. This won't take much time Keep playing Gurbani on an audio player, while you are asleep When you wake up, immediately start doing jaap of Mool Mantar or any Shabad you like. Keep the mala/counter nearby. Engage in plenty of physical workout in a day Maintain a routine in your day, i.e sleeping/waking up at approximately the same time daily, etc Don't oversleep Shower (including kesh) twice daily with cool water Wash your hands, feet and face with cold water, when sexual thoughts attack or take a cool shower. Start listening to Katha and Kirtan, when sexual thoughts attack. For most people, one can concentrate in them better than Naam Simran/Nitnem Try to wake up and meditate at Amritvela Start playing a game or watching a documentary/reading a book or engage in any other activity, which can assist you in diverting your mind away from sexual thoughts Avoid caffeinated drinks as much as possible. Caffeine affects sleeping patterns, which gives Lust an opportunity to attack. When a person is fully awake, then it is much easier to fight with Lust (and other vikars), as compared to when he is in a semi-awake condition (NREM sleeping stage). Maintain healthy eating habits, so that you avoid having any episodes of diarrhea or constipation. Lust can possibly attack the mind in these conditions too. Bhul chuk maaf

Paapiman, you know that MAJORITY of men as the age have enlarged prostrates and that means MAJORITY OF MEN dribble at some time or another and it happens FAR MORE OFTEN than you think. So does that mean any male over 50 should be also told to never do seva because they can accidentally dribble urine on their kacheras? Hari Singh Rhandawa himself probably dribbles urine on his kacheras!!! He should restrict himself from any seva of SGGSJ! And since ANY MAN it doesnt even have to be older, can dribble urine... you have in all likelyhood done it at times, because the way male plumbing works... the potential to dribble is in ANY MAN for awhile after urination. ALL MEN should be kept from ALL seva of SGGSJ! Maybe only the older women who have stopped periods or women on medication to stop periods should be doing ALL the seva then!!! See how ricidulous this becomes. Stop trying to use Brahamgyani as excuse with everything! Do you think Waheguru Ji is telling you to ignore what is COMMANDED in Gurbani because you think you can never live up to Brahamgyani? You are using it as an excuse to get out of having to listen to instruction in Gurbani. Like a free pass or something.... hey using that one twisted Gurbani tuk you like so much to degrade women, what if I said only Brahamgyani women can ever see their husband as God. And since I'll never be Brahamgyani I dot have to worry about it. So it shouldn't even be in DDTs Gurmat Rehet MAryada then! Your thinking is truly twisted.... You know he sexually assaulted numerous women right? And they WON the cases against him... Anyway I tried to block you why am I still able to see your nonsense responses??

DDT (or other small sects) can NOT speak for the entire panth Paapiman. Majority of Sikhs do not believe in their sexist ideology. Majority of Sikhs do not follow any jatha or taksal etc. and follow Sikh Rehet Maryada already. They will never go to being forced to do sexist practices. (just look at the uproar that happened with Hari Singh Randhawa over his sexist statements about women and suggesting they cant do seva at all ever... because they might accidentally have their period at any time. He was HUGELY ostracized across the entire planet - not just in BC where it happened.) If there is ever another panthic decision on an RM it cant be made by only so called orthodox sects. Or else majority of the panth will be left out, and will never agree to follow it. ANY NEW RM BEING CONSIDERED TO BE FAIR THE PANEL WILL NEED TO BE COMPRISED OF: 50% males / 50% females to have equal say EQUAL representation of ALL the different groups In proportion to the actual Sikh panth. (Meaning DDT can't have 50% of the panel be DDT because DDT do not comprise 50% of the panth.) So majority of the panel would be Sikhs without any association to any specific Jatha at all And yes AKJ would even have to have equal representation just as DDT. And the Missionaries! And FINAL SAY IN ALL areas of question would be put to SGGSJ ONLY. SGGSJ IS OUR GURU. No man made Rhetnama (which was subject to culture influence) could have say over SGGSJ. Get it??? THE RESULT???? You would likely end up with something very similar to Sikh Rehet Maryada anyway. Because vast majority of Sikhs believe in gender equality, not the bias in the DDT GRM. AKJ would definitely fight for male / female having equal opportunity in seva in addition to that. The women on the panel would equally majority argue for equality. And as I said majority of the panth dont follow any jatha and already follow SRM. You'd have other smaller fights like over meat, which would likely end up in consulting Gurbani and Gurbani is very grey on it. So again, you'd likely end up with similar result to what SRM is now. -------------- Neo... my experiences with 3HO came from a member named Kate Miller. And the hair swinging head banging is on a youtube video... They are doing kirtan with guitars etc on stage (which I am fine with as I said) but the "sikhs" take their turbans off and start swinging their hair around. The idol worship I have see with my own eyes... I have seen them bow not only at Siri Chand idols but also at his grave in India. (should we not bow only to SGGSJ?) And the meditation on Yogi Bhajans photo is just creepy... I watched them do it at a yoga class. It wasn't a quick mark of respect, it was a prolonged staring at a specific image of YB and chanting. Other things: Sikh Rehet Maryada says to make karah prashad must be made in the traditional way. I am assuming they don't follow SRM then? Dont get me wrong... I don't think they are bad people and most who do beadbi of SGGSJ (yoga with backs tuned to SGGSJ in Diwan Hall etc) are doing it unknowingly... in fact majority of 3HO members do not really even understand that most Sikhs don't do kundalini yoga. They think yoga class IS Sikhi. (This goes for a vast majority of them, from talking to them on the KY Facebook group). They had no idea of actual Sikh religious practices. They just signed up to do yoga, and then become a yoga teacher and then paid 35.00 USD for a SIkh 'spiritual' name chosen by numerology, and then considered themselves to be Sikh. If you dont believe me, just join the kundalini yoga group on facebook and talk to some random people on there. Having said that some of them do practice Sikhi pretty closely. And I have friends who are 3HO who swear that flapping your arms and legs during kirtan helps... Personally it's not for me though. And I do like a lot of music that has come out of there like Singh Kaur.... I do know Gursant Singh... and I think he goes overboard but he does make some good points too. Some things they do (because they have been misguided) can be labeled as beadbi. Did you know there was a petition to Akal Takht to try and stop some of the bad practices by 3HO? It was started in India actually... not to ostracize them completely, but just to make them aware that some practices they do they should look at changing... I don't know who started it.

I don't have any issues with AKJ at all. I think they are following closest to what our Gurus wanted. They certainly didn't want Sikh women to be men's servents tied to a kitchen all day and kept from religious duties. How do we know? Gurbani for one... and also of all the Sikhs Guru Ji sent out to spread Sikhi, included were 40 women. That is most definitely a leadership position. Our Guru armed women expecting us to also fight against injustice. But many of these groups, sants and babas like Hari Singh Rhandawa are letting Punjabi culture creep in and force women back into the role of only a meek housewife. They twist Gurbani through one liners in a self serving effort to make women look impure and dirty, and hence unworthy of any seva of SGGSJ lest they desecrate it. They do not want to entertain the idea that women can also lead, and are capable to be scholars and deserve an equal place beside Sikh men, so they cook up these ideas to 'put women in their place' so that they can maintain their high place of authority over women. What I find the most disturbing about that video: The discussion was about women being impure, and their right to do seva. Yet the entire panel was all male. What gives MEN the right to decide anything concerning women??? Especially without any women present to give their point of view!!!! In the video, he goes on to suggest that since a woman can start menstruating at any time, that women should be kept from seva ALL THE TIME (not even just during their period) because they might accidentally start their period while doing seva. What a crock! And overt discrimination based on a biological function that was created BY GOD! Does he realize that the light of our Creator is equally within ALL HUMANS? Gurbani makes this very clear! So how can he claim that a woman is impure and is unworthy to do seva of SGGSJ when she contains the divine light equally as him? That's the same as calling Waheguru impure! Gurbani tells us the ONLY thing which makes us impure is our ego, and that can't be washed away with water: ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੈਲੇ ਮਲੁ ਭਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥ Manmukẖ maile mal bẖare ha▫umai ṯarisnā vikār. The self-willed manmukhs are polluted. They are filled with the pollution of egotism, wickedness and desire. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥ Bin sabḏai mail na uṯrai mar jamėh ho▫e kẖu▫ār. Without the Shabad, this pollution is not washed off; through the cycle of death and rebirth, they waste away in misery. ਧਾਤੁਰ ਬਾਜੀ ਪਲਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੩॥ Ḏẖāṯur bājī palacẖ rahe nā urvār na pār. ||3|| Engrossed in this transitory drama, they are not at home in either this world or the next. ||3|| I had to laugh at the comments on the video itself because they are suggesting urine, semen, blood are all pollution. Did you know that when you look at things from God's perspective that there is no blood, no urine, no semen... etc at all? And its not just metaphor but an actual fact!? Every single atom is broken down into electrons and protons/neutrons. Neutrons and protons further break down to quarks. Every single quark is identical, and every single electron is identical. Look at reality from this level and there is no male, no female, no blood, no urine, no clothing, no YOU and even no physical SGGSJ (this is why it's not the physical pages we are revering, but instead it's the timeless TRUTH within it that we revere, else it beocme idol worship). See things from this level, and everything looks identical. There is no such thing as impurity or filth except that which Gurbani tells us... filth of the mind/Ego. ਜਗਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ Jag ha▫umai mail ḏukẖ pā▫i▫ā mal lāgī ḏūjai bẖā▫e. The world is polluted with the filth of egotism, suffering in pain. This filth sticks to them because of their love of duality. This filth of egotism cannot be washed away, even by taking cleansing baths at hundreds of sacred shrines. Those who can not (or refuse to) see everything in this sense of ONEness and equality (like Paapiman), are suffering in duality. They refuse to give up their statuses, their privilege over others. These Sants and Babas who pit humans against humans in useless heirarchies and statuses are missing the TRUTH that the Gurus taught and are actually perpetuating their own prison in duality. And the filth and impurity of it can not be washed off. By merely washing their bodies, they are cleaning nothing... ਜਿਉ ਜੋਰੂ ਸਿਰਨਾਵਣੀ ਆਵੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥ Ji▫o jorū sirnāvaṇī āvai vāro vār. As a woman has her periods, month after month, ਜੂਠੇ ਜੂਠਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥ Jūṯẖe jūṯẖā mukẖ vasai niṯ niṯ ho▫e kẖu▫ār. so does falsehood dwell in the mouth of the false; they suffer forever, again and again. ਸੂਚੇ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਬਹਨਿ ਜਿ ਪਿੰਡਾ ਧੋਇ ॥ Sūcẖe ehi na ākẖī▫ahi bahan jė pindā ḏẖo▫e. They are not called pure, who sit down after merely washing their bodies. ਸੂਚੇ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥ Sūcẖe se▫ī nānkā jin man vasi▫ā so▫e. ||2|| Only they are pure, O Nanak, within whose minds the Lord abides. ||2|| Gurbani makes it very clear that the physical is not what matters. It is the mind and ego which must be conquered and duality must be renounced. Its not about this phsyical life. Sants and Babas like him, are only spreading hatred and duality. And by the way, he equates blood as being impure same as urine and semen... its a given that as men age their prostrate enlarges and majority of men dribble urine which using his logic would also contaminate their whole clothing. At least women use hygiene protection while on their periods, while I am pretty sure vast majority of older men have dribbled and not had any hygiene product to catch it. And since it can happen at ANY TIME maybe all men over 50 should also be kept from all seva of SGGSJ at all times??? And this can even happen to younger men too! So maybe we just not have anyone at all doing seva of SGGSJ??? At the very least I am VERY sure that Hari Singh Randahawa being an older gentlemen has experienced this side effect of growing older himself. But I am darn sure he wont ever restrict himself from doing seva because it might happen at any time!

3HO centres their whole life around kundalini tantric sex yoga. They distort gurbani, and Yogi Bhajan was a crook who invented himself as a fake leader "mahan tantric" called himself "siri singh sahib" and said Akal Takht gave him the honor. They do not use the proper Sikh greeting of Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh they instead use 'Sat Nam'. They teach that Sikhism is yoga, they dance and throw their kesh around to gurbani being sung to folk music (I'm not against the using of guitars etc but thrashing your uncovered kesh around is bad), they give out grapes etc as karah prashad...its only supposed to be prepared one way... In fact, I get frustrated when people think I came to Sikhi through 3HO. They are not Sikhs. They are yogis, doing hindu idol worship and claiming to be Sikhs so they can monopolize off the Sikh image. They have Siri Chand idols and Hindu God idols around their 'ashram' (they dont even call it a gurdwara) in New Mexico. They do meditation on Yogi Bhajan's photo!!!!!!! (so instead of simran on the one timeless eternal creator, they are basically doing simran to Yogi Bhajan). Please note, I am not against doing proper yoga, but kundalini yoga was invented by YB by stealing moves from other forms of yoga and adding calesthenics to it and calling it kundalini yoga. I'm not against Sikhs doing yoga for fitness... outside the gurdwara. But doing it in the diwan hall, with their backs to SGGSJ is HUGE beadbi! AKJ however (as in Akhand Kirtani Jatha) I believe aside from the issue with ragmala is closest to how the Gurus wanted us to be. Equality between all humans... No position in AKJ is reserved for men only, including Panj Pyaras. Btw not ALL AKJ are against Ragmala... I agree with their position that both women and men should tie dastars to cover their kesh. I don't personally agree with their reason that keski is the kakkar... however their reasoning does make sense. That the other 4 kakkars are external gifts given by the guru where kesh is already established as one of the four bujjar kurehits, so why mention again as one of the 5 k's? They say the word was split from keski to kes ki in translation. Whether or not their reasoning is true, I believe both should tie turbans for other reasons... Guru Ji's 52 Hukams for one instructs ALL Sikhs to tie one at all times. Other reason is that in Gurbani it says let your total awareness be the turban on your head. It didnt say to men only. Also, its mentioned that anyone eating without their head covered is great sin. Majority of women do not carry a chunni everywhere, and even if they did, a chunni is near impossible to keep on your head especially if you are moving around. So it's impractical except for in the Gurdwara where you are sitting still and even then it falls off many times needing to be replaced during the diwan... don't believe me just watch the women next time you are at the gurdwara... how many times they have to fix their chunni! That's why I think turban should be worn by both. Also, when Guru Ji told the Khalsa to maintain it's distinct identity... how can a Sikh woman do that without a turban when she would be indistinguishable from a Hindu woman! (oh thats right some on here think women were never meant to be Khalsa anyway...) I know there are many AKJ haters on here. That's fine I don't really care. I dislike DDT / Sant Samaj as they do not embody what the Gurus taught about equality. To each their own. This is why SRM is the closest we will EVER get to full panthic RM. Because if DDT, Sant Samaj try to muscle in their idea of RM, then AKJ will be alienated. If AKJ's practice is pushed, then the former will be alienated. SRM was done in such a way that EVERY jatha, sect etc were included. Just because it says 3 banis in the am doesn't mean you can't do 5. It's saying the minimum. Regarding Ragmala it says that its up to you if you want to include it in Akhand Paaths etc. but that at the minimum it has to be INCLUDED in the SGGSJ (whether or not it is read). As for equality... what s in SRM in every way, agrees with Gurbani. The reason it won out when SRM was created, even with majority males contributing... was that SGGSJ is the FINAL and highest authority. So historical rhetnamas written by MEN were considered, but also understood to be subject to culture influcence. If there was a question on something they went to SGGSJ and what was found in SGGSJ was that males do not have any authority over females, nor do they have any privilege over females for simply being male. Historical Rhetnamas are written by humans and are not infallible. Gurbani surpasses all that. Any new attempt at a Rehet Maryada REQUIRES these basics to be included in the panel deciding on it: 1) EQUAL amount of males and females. 50 % each 2) EQUAL amount representation of all the Jathas, and with a corresponding representation from Sikhs who do not associate to any specific jatha (which make up more than 50% of the Sikh population btw... so having representation from nearly all DDT/Nihgang/Sant samaj etc can NOT possibly speak for the whole panth) 3) FINAL authority and deciding factor on any issues that arise questions, should be given to SGGSJ ONLY... Gurbani ONLY. Next in line would be Guru Gobind Singh Jis 52 Hukams. Not historical rhetnamas which were written by men, and subject to cultural influence. Gurbani IS GURU and deserves FINAL say!

paapiman, you keep saying that 'sex' is bad for the body? Can you show some scientific evidence for this? Because I can show scientific evidence for the opposite. Evidence shows that the physical pleasure of sex is only a small part of the benefit. There is evidence which suggests that regularly, it helps the body's immune system, lowers blood pressure, burns calories, lowers heart attack risk, lessens chronic pain, and actually helps prevention of prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. It also releases stress, and improves sleep. In addition to the physical health benefits, the hormones produced actually help the couple bond emotionally as husband and wife. Can you imagine being married but having no relations with your spouse how would that marriage really be? You'd be living as (ok you said brother / sister instead of friends - word play semantics). If we were as you said at that top level of Sikhi where we block sex from our marriage because we are not having children or done having children... what would that do the 'blissful union' that couple undertook? I think there is deeper meaning to this. Many spiritual paths explain an actual energy transfer happening between a couple during sex. This is not on a physical level but on a spiritual level. It's why multiple partners is not a good thing. All that energy transfer of different people, and the people they were with can become confusing. I truly believe there is something to this... because we all know the base level of everything is ONE. One energy field... ONE universal consciousness. This physical world really IS an illusion because as we peer deeper into quantum level we see the particles at some point disappear. And all that's left is one underlying energy field. Out of this field everything - ALL form arises. So our true nature is that spiritual energy. So when two beings couple, they are sharing that energy on a spiritual level... even beyond quantum level. This energy has also been referred to as 'pure light' so the verse where it says husband and wife are not those who merely sit together but become ONE light in two bodies.... to me that has a deeper level of truth. Blissful union because it happens at that base level of existence. This is something way beyond the physical. When two Sikhs get married, it's not only to produce physical children, but to rectify two halves of a whole, and become ONE in their journey spiritually toward the same end goal. A sister / brother relationship can not possibly ever compare. This is why I interpret it much differently than you. And also explains the verse where it says if being celebit were the key, then eunichs should have secured heaven. Sex with those who are not your spouse, is forbidden. And it's bad spiritually... at that energy level. Sex with your spouse however, strengthens that spiritual bond between husband and wife to truly become ONE soul in two bodies at the base level of all existence. The fact that there is physical pleasure is a side effect of biology. I believe the true message is to not become addicted to the physical aspects of it, become a sex addict, have sex with tons of people... because by focusing on ONLY the physical aspect of it, you will miss out on that spiritual deep connection. YOU are the only one hurt by this. But with that ONE person you vowed to spend your life with in front of Guru Ji, working towards merging back with Creator together on the same journey as ONE... this is a gift. Sex is not merely just a physical tool for procreation only. You can chose to believe however you want, but rather than listen to other's opinions of Gurbani, I read it myself and look at the whole picture. Many things are not written word for word... they are intertwined with allegory and metaphor. I see many descriptions of celestial vibrations, anhad naad, light / cosmic sounds in Gurbani. Consciusness and matter being intertwined.... It all comes down to one thing... vibration is frequency. All of these things are vibration or frequency in ONE medium.... In and of them self they are nothing.... they require a medium, and that medium is pure consciousness. And there is only ONE consciousness in existence. So sex for a married Sikh couple can bring them closer as ONE jot in two bodies, which will help them in their journey toward merging back with Creator.

Hmm if being intimate with your own spouse is wrong, then why get married? If it's only for a baby, then a woman can easily go get artificial inseminated. If a married couple only wants one child, are they supposed to never touch each other again after the child is born? Once the woman becomes infertile in mid 40's the married couple should get separate beds and become just friends? What's the point of marriage then? You can do all else with just friends. I thought the Gurus were in support of living house holder life and not that of an ascetic who avoids living. I have always read that there is a huge difference between showing caring and love for your spouse, and becoming attached and lustful. And that relations with your own spouse is fine. I am approaching 40 fast, and being married soon... to an Amritdhari Singh. He is NOT DDT affiliated though if that matters. But maybe since many women my age have trouble conceiving and carrying to full term, in your opinion should I just forget about marrying him and just have him as a friend? Same as all my other friends? SInce there is a good chance I may never have a child? I don't see a point marrying someone if you will only ever be 'married' in name only. And this doesn't seem right... Even the Amritdhari couples I know, who wanted one child, I am absolutely positive they have not all of a sudden got separate beds and decide to live as friends. Also is it anything that gives pleasure should be stopped? I get pleasure from skydiving, also playing guitar. Should I stop those too because they have no direct practical conclusion. They are only done for pleasure... Can you provide quote from SGGSJ to support this stance? I could not find anything about it in Sikh Rehet Maryada. It seems as long as a couple go through anand karaj, Sikhi seems to stay out of the bedroom so to speak... Is this only a DDT interpretation? Edit: When I searched in SGGSJ for this topic, in many places where it warns about being engrossed in sexual desire, it also talks about hunger and pleasures of the 'mouth'. I think is a good comparison, because it would be impossible to cut out food altogether. But if you interpret the lines in the way you have, you would have to also cut out all food. It doesn't make sense. I think the message is more about control, and moderation. Eat but don't overindulge... relations with your own spouse are ok, but not to the point of sexual addiction or lust... Page 224, Line 4 ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਿਖੁ ਭੂਖ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥ काम क्रोध बिखु भूख पिआसा ॥ Kām karoḏẖ bikẖ bẖūkẖ pi▫āsā. by sexual desire, anger, corruption, hunger and thirst. --- Further, I have found on several sikh sources online that kaam is defined as 'uncontrolled sexual desire' not ALL sexual desire. And what about when Guru Ji says: Bind Raakh jo Tariho Bhai, khusrey kion na paramghat payee ??? Also: Raag Aasaa, Pannaa 418 Some control their sexual energy and are known as celibates, but without the Guru's word, they are not saved and they wander in reincarnation II6II This seems to suggest that merely by avoiding sex, will not get you to God... seems to support sex with ones own spouse is fine, but do not let it control you.

    I Accuse

I Accuse, A Passage From Book by Jarnail Singh Jarnail Singh, the journalist who hurled a shoe at India's Home Minister P Chidambaram in April and forced the Indian Government to respond to the victims of 1984, has written a book on the 1984 anti-Sikh pogroms - I Accuse: The Anti-Sikh Violence of 1984. Shanti Kaur was filled with foreboding. Her 22-year-old son Sohan Singh had not come home. There were just 23 days left for his wedding on April 30, 2009. Did he not like his prospective bride in Rajasthan? He had looked happy about it but he hadn't called and none of his friends knew where he was. After two days of worry, she went to the police. They washed their hands off the problem, saying, 'Must be somewhere with his friends.' Shanti Kaur had seen her father Kirpal Singh and brother Modu Singh being burnt alive at the hands of a mob in 1984. Later, her husband died of throat cancer. She had no father, brother or husband. Would she lose her son as well? She wondered if she should tell the girl's side, but decided it would be too insulting. She decided to wait for a few days. She had pulled her son Sohan Singh out of the quagmire of drugs after a lot of effort. But the drug traders had killed him for refusing to buy any more. His body was hidden in his house, beneath the bedding. The murderer, Kamal, was so arrogant, that he did not even try to get rid of the body, confident no one would go to the police. People say Kamal had murdered his brother too. When the body started to smell, the housemaid noticed. The news spread, but the body couldn't be identified as its face had been mutilated. Hearing the news, Shanti Kaur went to the house. She recognised his clothes and his chappals. The long shadows of 1984 had destroyed everything she had. The police were not ready to register a case of murder. But when the people from the colony surrounded the police station, they rounded up the killers. Shanti Kaur took a loan for the funeral and said prayers for her son and grieved not just for the boy whose future had once momentarily seemed brighter, but for all the others she had lost as well. She was living in Block 32 of Trilokpuri with her father Kirpal Singh and brother Modu Singh when the mob burnt 500 men alive as the police stood by. At the time Shanti Kaur was 17 but she could not understand why the mob was bent on killing them. In front of her eyes her father Kirpal Singh and brother Modu Singh were tied to a charpoy. First their long hair was cut off and then they were set alight as casually as the burning of Ravana's effigy on Dussehra day. Even today Shanti Kaur hears the cries of her burning father and brother. She had just turned 18 when relatives married her off to Puran Singh. Puran Singh's father had been hacked to death by the mob in Sultanpuri. Even Puran Singh had been slashed with swords and knives and left for dead. He used to earn a living by selling vegetables, but it seemed then that her life was coming together again. During this period they had three children -- Sohan Singh, Rajni and Gurbachan Singh. However Puran Singh's health was deteriorating. He was becoming weaker day by day and he talked of pain in the neck where he had been slashed by a knife. They did not have enough money for treatment at a good hospital though Shanti Kaur suggested a number of times that he should see a doctor at a good hospital. At this he would say, 'When we have a bit more money then we shall see.' But that day never came. When he was diagnosed with throat cancer they found that the treatment would cost hundreds of thousands. Where could they have got so much money from? Shanti Kaur was helpless. He passed away within a month in front of their eyes. Shanti Kaur did not give up and started working in homes to bring up her children. Since she was not educated her options were very limited. When she started going to work, people engaged in the drug trade pushed Sohan Singh towards the drug habit. He would remain sad and tired all the time. When Shanti Kaur would ask, 'Son, what has happened?' he wouldn't reply. When she probed his friends, their reply shocked her. Sohan was addicted to smack. When he couldn't get it he would become frantic, thrashing about as if he was going to die. His breathing would slow down, his throat would dry up and his legs would hurt so much that he could not stand. Shanti did not know what to do. The 15-year-old son would understand his mother's pain and ask her to poison and kill him. But how could she do that? Then he would cry for her to save him. She took him to the gurdwara many times and made him swear that he would not take drugs but when he would have the craving, he would forget everything else. Neighbours suggested that she should send him to a de-addiction centre where he could be treated: He went repeatedly to centres at Aman Vihar, Rohini, Paharganj, and Govindpuri. She tried everything to get her son treated. For some time he would lose the habit but later he would again fall in with the same company and the addiction would start again. In the end he was admitted to the Nihal Vihar Centre. He was kept there for nearly one and a half years and she paid for the expenses by working in homes. Shanti Kaur's smile began to return when her son left drugs completely. After he returned home he stayed away from drugs and the company of the drug addicts. When he started working she was relieved. She felt as if her sacrifices were bringing results. When I was listening to her tell her story, I could not imagine a sadness greater than this. Shanti Kaur's daughter Rajni is 16 years old now. When she started going to houses to work, the people around started saying all sorts of things. The younger son has left his studies and works in a clothing shop but she is worried about her daughter's marriage. She asks, 'When will peace be found in my life?' This is not an uncommon story. Far too many of the children of the victims of 1984 are addicted to drugs. After the death of their fathers, their mothers were compelled to go out to work and there was no one to take care of the kids. Gopi Kaur said bitterly in an interview with this author that the accused in the cases of violence deliberately got the children of the widows' colony addicted to drugs so that their whole generation would be destroyed and there would be no one left to raise a voice about 1984. This is the position held by Jagdish Singh, president of the Sikh Riot Victims' Action Committee, and all the widows are of the same view. * * * * * But the despair of the widows is understandable. After losing seven people including her husband in the massacre, Gopi Kaur's hopes were centred on her son, Gurmeet Singh. But when he was 22 years old, Gurmeet fell into the drug habit, became addicted to smack, and died of his addiction. Her younger brother-in-law, Chandu Singh, is so emotionally scarred from his experiences in 1984, he can't go out of the house. He is so scared of the sight of a khaki uniform that he starts running when he sees a police officer. He just sits, staring blankly in front of him all day. Gopi is one of the 70 unfortunate women who received compensation as victims of 1984, but unscrupulous people robbed her of even that. A bogus company called the Oriental Housing Society came into being and lured the uneducated, vulnerable widows into depositing their money into this scheme, promising higher returns. In six months this organisation vanished. The widows curse them till today and a case of fraud is being fought in the courts. However, there is little hope of getting the money back. Two of Barfi Kaur's nephews lost their lives in the prime of their youth by taking drugs. The terrible events of 1984 cast their long shadow, blighting even the lives of young people, who grew up in an atmosphere of the despair and bitterness of their families who had lost everything. Many of the widows feel the people responsible for their husband's deaths are also to blame for all that has befallen them since. The same people have blocked the course of justice and continue to protect the perpetrators. Barfi Kaur and the other widows who got together in Jagdish Singh's house to talk to me said that in the Widow Colony, more than 200 young men have lost their lives to drugs. She recalls that when she and the other widows of the colony used to go out for work, which they were compelled to do as their husbands, the family wage earners, had been killed, kids in the age group of ten to 15 years were targeted and lured into the drug habit by unscrupulous pushers who preyed on unsupervised young boys. There are few households in the colony where the scourge of these intoxicants is not felt. The desperation among the addicts is such that they will even take drugs meant for animals to satisfy their cravings. Young children sniff whitener after pouring it on a handkerchief. Sniffing petrol and other substances it quite common. They can finish a whole strip of Proxyvon-1 tablets in a day. There are frequent thefts to pay for the habit. They sell anything, from the neighbour's motor pumps to household clothes and utensils. If families refuse them money, the atmosphere in the house degenerates into abuses and fights. The widows' hopes were centred on their children. They hoped their sons would do well, but for many households in the widows' colony, this hope too has dwindled. A tearful Gopi says, 'I lost seven men from my house in the riots but now I cannot tolerate the pain of losing my young son.' Jagdish Singh alleges that there is a well-thought-out conspiracy behind the spread of drug addiction in the widows' colony perpetrated by those powers that are against the riot victims. He says, 'If this was not true then a least the police would have been with us. We have requested help from various police sources, but not one is prepared to listen.' The drugs are being sold openly in the form of medicines and injections but there is no one to stop them. They are tired of complaining but the police does not take any action. Proxyvon and other drugs are freely available at chemist shops but there is no stopping them. Why is it so?' The situation is such that the day Jagdish Singh complained about the drug business to the police, his house was burgled the same night. Perhaps it was a warning. Jagdish Singh says that ever since the pogrom-hit families have recovered a bit and started asking for justice, the drug dealers have one by one started giving away the drugs free of cost. Whether this is a conspiracy or not is difficult to say, but as the people in the area ask constantly, why aren't the police taking any action? With the colony in the throes of the drug habit, the women are forced to consider all possible ways of earning a living. With fathers dead in the pogroms, brothers lost to the drug habit and helpless mothers, some girls have been forced to take to prostitution. These innocent girls are being taken advantage of. Jagdish Singh admits that he knows that five to ten girls from their colony are fully into this trade and there are probably at least 50 to 60 more. These consequences of the massacre are heart-rending. Jagdish Singh says, 'If we have something in hand only then can we advise them. If somebody gives them a job or if we can offer a means of earning, only then can we counsel them.' The fallout of the violence of 1984 is still destroying the families of the victims.

Disabling Punjab — Nris To Blame?

How is that shifting blame? They are a part of 'us'. The point is that our problems mainly stem from within us. In anycase, the numbers of Khatris in the panth makes them pretty uninfluential as a cultural force in Panjab these days. This is only probably different in Delhi. This whole victim mentality desi Panjabis have adopted en masse needs to stop now. PS - Plenty of British Sikh are assimilating themselves all over the place too. We don't have that insular mentality I guess, well, at least when it comes to outsiders, between ourselves we act like idiots. The amount of Jattian or apneean in general married to, or dating goray (and others) I've met at work is beyond counting. What's your point? Given the female feticide, inter-cultural and inter-religious marriages are only going to become more prevalent - not less.

Disabling Punjab — Nris To Blame?

Some people may have used it wisely. I remember one girl telling me how the money her father sent to her chacha back home was spent on new tractors and how the idiot chacha had 4/5 tractors when he only needed one with the amount of land he had. Then came the inevitable feuds with other farmers who demanded he 'share' with them. Funny though, if NRIs don't help they are selfish bastards, when they do, they are ruining Panjabis back home. I tell you one thing, this culture of shifting blame away from ourselves kills the quom more than ANYTHING else. The truth is that the primary Sikh religious institute in Panjab is thoroughly corrupted by very egocentric Jatts who could not care a toss about Sikhi, Sikhs or Panjabis. Droves of the youths are plain layabout junkies. The Jatt culture emphasis on status, wealth, pleasure and dekawaah as well as 'lording' it around (being a sardar in your own imagination) has overtaken the Sikh values of restraint, discipline, abstinence and humility in Panjab. The people seem to lack a moral, spiritual base as well as an intellectual one. Under these circumstances, how are they going to do anything other than go from calamity to calamity? How is any place with such a strong preponderance of bullshit, superficial values going to be anything other than crap? Plus the combination of apnay's love of err.....chemically altered mental states mixed with Paks across the border with their drug dealing predilections doesn't help at all. But where is our vibe in all this? Are we just going to keep crying about who has wronged us or start being astute in how we raise and educate our youth? It's hard not to feel that Panjabis deserve every bad thing happening to them these days. Fix up man!!

They are stats, and as is standard, would have been taken from a sample population, but irrelevant - the report highlights that which everyone who visits the Punjab (real Punjab) or lives in Punjab knows - that the large part of the youth are addicted to nasha, as well as other things. This is the reason why so many Sants try and do parchaar in Punjab for most of the year, rather than taking up numerous diasphora invites - so that they they can help combat this disease. Sadly, thats a generation lost to MTV culture combined with bad socio-political culture and bad Government/s. There will be many suggestions of improving the situation, but none will be as relevant as the fact that Dharma has become an alien concept, and those that try and become Singhs are laughed/shouted at, called Gyani/Baba and ridiculed by their own family - and go through hell in educational institutions down to peer pressure and media portayal. I salute those diamonds who in my very strong and substantiated opinion, who are able to become Guru Gobind Singhs children in Punjab and Delhi today. Ironically, these are the hardest places to be a Sikh in the world today.
