    Ji Brij bhasha Or Braj language as we may call it is actually old Hindi, based on Avadhi Or Prakrit I guess.. It's the same script as in Hindi. Brij Is mainly related to Sri Krishna. So it's very close to Hindi Guru Gobind Singh ji as was born in Patna, Bihar region, must be well versed in this language. He is anyway Sarab kala bharpoor and we see Persian, Arabic etc too used in Jaap Sahib and Akal Ustat Bani. Guru Sahib's '52 kavis' were also learned Hindus of that times. Bhai Nandlaal ji was a great Scholar and very learned. So that may be the reason for vivid use of language and poetry. For those who speak Hindi it's easy rather n that's how I know and understand it. I am somehow fascinated with Dasam Bani so much. Though even my parents keep telling me to indulge more in SGGS ji.. Chandi di Vaar, I have included in my Nitnem and my kids also sing it.

    You know, a few of us here have been looking at SIkh ithihaas for a while now, and we've been blessed enough to be able to look at puratan sources outside of all the post-annexation stuff that most of us would have grown up with. I'd like to discuss. Is it important and/or useful. If so - in which way? Why?

    The maharajah’s European doctor John Martin Honigberger, a native of Kronstadt in Transylvania (no Dracula jokes please!), was a medical man. He spent 15 years at Lahore, as a physician and a Director of a gunpowder mill in the service of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He was at Lahore at the British ‘annexation’, after which he was made to relinquish his former position on receipt of a pension. His published work, Thirty-Five Years In The East, was released in two volumes with part 1 being an autobiographical narrative and volume 2 concentrating on medical matters. That being said, in volume 1 the author frequently refers to the medicine he used and encountered during his travels. The work is a fascinating one, for many reasons. In addition to the references to both traditional eastern and early western practices in combating disease, there are also brief but interesting accounts of some of the religious behaviour he witnessed. His thoughts towards the then emerging field of pharmacology are also documented and he often contrasts eastern and western practice. Honigberger’s status meant he was also privy to or at least in close proximity to the bloody political intrigues that took place after the death of the popular monarch. Here too he provides his own version of events. I will be posting extracts purely out of itihaasik interest which should hopefully make the work more accessible to any interested brothers and sisters, especially the younger generation.     I didn't know that veer ji thanks for letting me know. But it was quite a lot of censorship that was placed on our religion itihaas and maryada as well since they made panth maryada which nobody believes as it has many wrong ideas in.

    Yes veer ji also Sri Dasam Granth Sahib was done parkash at many gurdwaras in punjab including Sri Darbar Sahib but it was removed during the colonial time. Its good that we are getting information now about what has been lost about our history. Also i remember hearing was that the size of sri sahibs kirpans was changed as well along with the beard tying trend as well was started during this time.

    Yeah, and overall Dasam Granth was subtly sidelined too during this period in my opinion. It's now like we are only just rediscovering it.

    Can you tell us more about it? How do you think it differs from Panjabi? How did you learn it? Do you ever read older Sikh texts that are written in Brij Bhasha?

    Bhen ji thats really nice post on the subject. I have read this bani a few times now its originally from Chandi Chirtar 2 the 8th chapter in the bani. The maryada is the same as Chandi Di Vaar to be read before sunset. Its quite a bir ras bani the full 8 chapters in Chandi Chirtar 2 so its best to read alongside with Sukhmani Sahib afterwards to control the bir ras. Its also best to read after a shower or kesi ishan if you can. I have read the full paath but why they have published this as a short bani i am not sure but i did hear in a katha track that it can read 11 times the 8th chapter which you have made a thread on. Also the ending dohra is read in Sri Hazur Sahib, Nihang Dals and Damdami Taksal gutka pothis.
