  13. Waheguru Ji What's the difference between Granthi and Pathi? Are they the same or is there a difference?
  14. Waheguru Ji Came across this interesting article What Are the Practices by Which We Can Be Successful in Bhagti/Devotion? The first condition is to have only one object in mind, for devotion should be offered to one only. The rays of the sun are able to burn a piece of cloth if they are concentrated through a magnifying glass, but if they are spread over a large area they are unable to do so. Similarly, if the currents of devotion coming from one’s mind are concentrated on one’s beloved, then the fruit of devotion increases and one can act in any manner one desires. So long as devotion is not one-pointed, the idea of duality will be on one’s mind, and consequently, there will be no concentration. Therefore, for true devotion, one-pointedness is most essential. In other words, the object of devotion should be one. A woman who has one husband is “sohagan” (happily married). She is able to obtain real happiness out of marriage. Contact and communion with one person or one object only gives purity of heart and also results in a joyful life. Intimate contact with more than one is impure and leads to disputes and other troubles. This is also true in connection with the spiritual life. Kabir Ji brings this idea home to us in the following quotation: A chaste and faithful wife is dyed in the hue of her beloved. In other words, she is the queen of the home, whereas the other type moves from place to place and has no goal. A faithful wife who has only one husband is very happy; but a woman who has many is foul of mind and body. Both types are to be found in the human form. Therefore, in Gurbani one will find emphasis placed on the fact that the object of devotion should be one: You should sing the praises of One. You should have Simran with a one-pointed mind. How can I praise the qualities of that state in which mind and body are both joined in being devoted to one object of love! (Guru Granth Sahib) We should think of only one object and we should repeat the Name of only one object (the Lord). That object should rest firmly in the seat of our mind and we should sing His praises at all times and remember Him with concentrated attention. In devotion it is considered sinful to give place in one’s mind to thoughts of love for more than one object, because that brings no results. We should not give our heart to anyone other than the object of our love, because if we do that, we will not have peace of mind. The second essential condition is Satsang (true association). We should stay in the company of persons who have devotion fully established in their minds. A melon near another melon will take on its color. If we are in the company of Saints, we shall also be dyed in the hue of their devotion. In other words, our devotion will become strong. Association with a Saint is exalted and pure. Whoever remains in such company develops the state of communion with God. (Guru Granth Sahib) Devotees whose minds have made friends with Saints are so much dyed in the hue of God’s love that their love will never waver. (Guru Granth Sahib) O Kabir! It is better if dhak (a bitter shrub) is grown near a sandal tree, because once it is placed near sandalwood it will imbibe its fragrance. (Bhagat Kabir Ji) Devotion is a gift which is bestowed on devotees. When we enjoy this boon, we are fully saturated with the color of devotion. But this can be achieved only by the grace of the Lord. Association with Saints is association with God. Their grace and kindness is the grace of God, because God is manifest in the Saints, and the Saints are fully immersed in God. The devotee of the Lord is the same as the Lord. There is no difference between the two, even if one of them should be found in human form. (Guru Granth Sahib) We should avoid bad company. Wealth and lust are two difficult obstacles which cause destruction if one is engrossed in them. By intimate contact with bad company one becomes lost. Likewise, we should not associate with persons whose behavior turns our minds away from our object of devotion, because association with them will lead us astray, will make us arrogant, and will tempt us into many other vices. Even if you have many good qualities, you should lead a life of humility and consider those qualities as a gift from Waheguru, because Waheguru loves the humble. Remember this well in your heart and do not enter into unnecessary disputes or critical discussions, because such discussions lead nowhere. They may be compared to churning water. The path of devotion is also the path of action. Bhagat Kabir Ji says: This devotion is a path of action and not of intellect. Therefore, do not talk but practice devotion, for then you will achieve something. We should not indulge in disputes with anybody, because the tongue that speaks ill of others should instead drink only the Name of God. (Guru Granth Sahib) The third essential condition is a proper diet. Our food should be satvik (that which produces tranquility and pure thoughts). This includes rice, wheat, pulses, milk and curd. Food conditions our mind, so our ideas will have the same qualities as the type of food we eat. If we take rajsik food (that which produces restlessness and anger), like meat, fat, and so forth, the mind will become restless. But if we take tamsik food (that which produces sluggishness), like stale food, fish, wine, and other heavy pungent thing, we shall be prone to laziness. Consider the entire world as having issued from the one God, and therefore do not harm or injure any body’s mind by your talk or action. The study of Gurbani, maintaining good character, the practice of simran, attending satsang, the habit of non-violence, kindness, purity of body and mind, faith, prayer, seeing Waheguru in everything – all these factors help us in our devotion to Him. One should forget himself and everything else while engrossed in love for the Lord. Then he makes progress towards the object of his devotion; otherwise, he reverts to idle pursuits.

  17. Pakistan: 150-year-old Temple To Ground, Another Hindu Temple Attacked With Rocket Launchers Monday, July 17, 2023 In two separate incidents in Sindh province of Pakistan, a 150-year old Hindu temple was razed to ground while another temple was attacked with rocket launchers. A group of assailants attacked a Hindu temple and adjoining homes belonging to the Hindu community in Sindh’s Kashmore during the early hours of Sunday. The group fired “rocket launchers” at Hindu, which was closed during the attack. The temple opens annually for religious services conducted by the Bagri community. According to local police, eight or nine gunmen were involved in the attack. The rocket launchers fired by the attackers failed to explode, resulting in no loss of life. Bagri community, widely regarded in an indigenous community in Pakistan’s Sindh and Punjab provinces, is referred to as ‘scheduled caste’ in Pakistan’s constitution. They speak Bagri language and practice Hinduism. Dawn quoted Dr Suresh, a member of the Bagri community, as saying that the rocket launchers fired by the dacoits failed to explode, resulting in no loss of life. He urged the police to protect the community, saying the incident had left the residents in a state of panic. The violent attack on the Kashmore temple comes days after dacoits in the Kashmore and Ghotki riverine areas issued threats to attack Hindu places of worship and community members in retaliation to Seema Haider Jakhrani's PUBG love story. On Friday a night, the 150-year old Mari Mata Temple in Karachi’s Soldier Bazar was razed to the ground by bulldozers in the presence of a heavy contingent of police force. The temple was demolished after being declared an old and dangerous structure in Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh Province. The temple, which is sprrad over 400-500 square yards, had been the target of land grabbers and developers for years now. The temple was under the management of the Madrasi Hindu community of Karachi. A member of the Madrasi Hindu community said that they were facing pressure to vacate by two individuals, namely, Imran Hashmi and Rekha AKA Nagin Bai. There was also reports that the temple being sold off by the two named to another party for an amount of 70 million rupees and the buyers were looking to build a commercial building there. Ram Nath Mishra Maharaj, the caretaker of the nearby Shri Punch Mukhi Hanuman Mandir, said that the bulldozers left the outer walls and the temple’s main gate intact, but they demolished the entire inside structure. The community has appealed to the Pakistan-Hindu Council, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and the Inspector General of Sindh police to address the issue on an urgent basis. In June 2022, Shri Mari Mata Mandir in Karachi was desecrated by a mob. The violent mob broke into the house of the priest and vandalised it. They even damaged the idol of Shri Mari Mata Mandir that the priest had kept in his house due to renovation work at the temple. In August 2021, the Ganesh temple in Punjab’s Rahim Yar Khan district was vandalised by a mob of over 200 people. In March, a group of unidentified people attacked an over 100-year-old Hindu temple in Rawalpindi. In December 2020, a mob of over 1,500 Muslims attacked and set fire to a Hindu temple in a village in Karak district, some 160 kilometres southeast of Peshawar. Discrimination and violence against religious minorities are commonplace in Pakistan, where Muslims make up 97 per cent of the population and Hindus around two percent. Temples belonging to the minority Hindu population in Pakistan are often the target of mob violence. 18. India registers remarkable reduction in poverty; 415 million people out of poverty level in just 15 years: UN 11 Jul 2023 India lifted 415 million people out of poverty within 15 years, according to the UN. The achievement was highlighted in the latest update of the Multidimensional Poverty Index. 25 countries, including India, successfully halved their MPI values within the same timeframe. UN said that 25 countries, including India, successfully halved their global MPI values within 15 years, showing that rapid progress is attainable. UN said that 25 countries, including India, successfully halved their global MPI values within 15 years, showing that rapid progress is attainable. A total of 415 million people moved out of poverty in India within just 15 years from 2005/2006 to 2019/2021, the UN said on Tuesday. With this data, the UN highlights the remarkable achievement by the world's most populous nation. The latest update of the global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) was released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) at the University of Oxford. It said that 25 countries, including India, successfully halved their global MPI values within 15 years, showing that rapid progress is attainable. These countries include Cambodia, China, Congo, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Serbia, and Vietnam. As per UNDP, “..India saw a remarkable reduction in poverty, with 415 million people exiting poverty within a span of just 15 years (2005/6–19/21). Large numbers of people were lifted out of poverty in China (2010–14, 69 million) and Indonesia (2012–17, 8 million)..." Earlier in April, India surpassed China to become the world’s most populous nation with 142.86 crore people, according to UN data. The report also demonstrates that poverty reduction is achievable, however, the lack of comprehensive data during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic poses challenges in assessing immediate prospects, it said. As per the report, in India, 415 million poor people moved out of poverty from 2005/2006 to 2019/2021, with incidence falling from 55.1 percent in 2005/2006 to 16.4 per cent in 2019/2021. In 2005/2006, about 645 million people were in multidimensional poverty in India, with this number declining to about 370 million in 2015/2016 and 230 million in 2019/2021. Furthermore, the report also noted that deprivation in all indicators declined in India, and “the poorest states and groups, including children and people in disadvantaged caste groups, had the fastest absolute progress." According to the report, people who are multidimensionally poor and deprived under the nutrition indicator in India declined from 44.3 per cent in 2005/2006 to 11.8 per cent in 2019/2021, and child mortality fell from 4.5 per cent to 1.5 per cent. In the drinking water indicator, the percentage of people who were multidimensionally poor and deprived fell from 16.4 in 2005/2006 to 2.7 in 2019/2021. In the same way, the percentage of people who were multidimensionally poor and deprived fell from electricity from 29 per cent to 2.1 per cent) and housing from 44.9 per cent to 13.6 per cent, the report showed. The report also said that countries with different incidences of poverty also halved their global MPI value. While 17 countries that did so had an incidence under 25 per cent in the first period, India and Congo had a starting incidence above 50 per cent. India was among the 19 countries that halved their global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) value during one period - for India it was 2005/2006–2015/2016. 21. TERMS USED TO DESCRIBE DATES In Gurbani, particularly in Sri Dasam Granth Sahib, certain terms are used to describe dates and events. For example, in Sri Benti Chaupai Sahib, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji writes about the day that the Chaupai Sahib Bani was composed :- ਭਾਦ੍ਰਵ ਸੁਦੀ ਅਸਟਮੀ ਰਵਿ ਵਾਰਾ ॥ In the month of Bhadon - on Sudi 8 - on a Sunday. ਤੀਰ ਸਤੁਦ੍ਰਵ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸੁਧਾਰਾ ॥੪੦੫॥ On the banks of the Sutlej River, this bani was completed. Or sometimes we hear of dates of historical events described in certain words :- For example, the Parkash Dihara of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji is on Poh Sudi 7. What is Bhadon Sudi 8 or Poh Sudi 7? Bhadon or Poh is the month as in the Indian Calender - as described in Gurbani in Baramaha Paath. Sudi 8 means the 8th day AFTER the new moon(Massia) - counting the new moon day as zero. To understand better, study the image below. It describes the day of Poh Sudi 7 in the year 2017. Check this graph http://www.gurukhoj.com/assets/img/Sudi Vadi.jpg In year 2022, month of Bhadon is from Aug 17 to Sep 16. Massia(New Moon) is on Aug 27. So the ucharan date of Sri Chaupai Sahib in the year 2022 is on 4th September 2022 (Bhadon Sudi 8). NOTE : While the above is correct, there are some years when adjustments are made to the calender. This is because ... A solar year (the time it takes Earth to orbit the sun) lasts around 365 days. A lunar year (12 full cycles of the Moon) is roughly 354 days.
