  1. Is it this quote ? ; 'There was talk of such a science of archery and stick fighting only a few years ago in the Punjab that listening of it the English-educated young men will consider it astonishing. In sincerity I believe present day young men might just consider these skills and Shastar Vidiya most likely impossible, because they have not even seen those bows nevermind stringing them. Like this, many sciences and skills after attaining their heights have declined. Before 1857 many quivers full of arrows, matchlocks, flintlock guns, swords, lances, spears, Sang, Katar, Pesh Kabz, pistols, shields etc., weapons, armour and many types of chainmail was found house to house, and all the people in their homes learned and taught Shastar Vidiya and became complete soldiers. Now no one even speaks of these skills the sons of brave warriors are becoming engrossed in making money, even to us who have employed Shastar Vidiya, it is becoming a dream. In another fifty years or so, this Vidiya would have dried up and people will say it (past skills) were but, all lies' ('Twarikh Guru Khalsa', Giani Gian Singh Nirmala (1899) Vol.1, Pa. 36-37) I've attached a scan of the relevant pages from the third edition (1993)

The Panja Sahib Building dates from 1932 and was modelled on the Maharaja Ranjit Singh samadhi in Lahore. This picture was taken on May 2nd 2009 - Gurdwara Panja Sahib is currently providing shelter to those Hindus and Sikhs forced out by the Taliban in the Swat Valley. * taken from Sajjad Ali Qureshi's flickr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/pkjournalist/3506622988/

Beholding You, I am wonder-struck. ||1||Pause|| Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Raag Gujri Ang 507 Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh !! Lakh Lakh Vadhaai to All - May Guru Sahib Shower Blessings on you all this Vaisakhi. Also a big Thank you to all the sewadars at Sikhawareness.com for bringing back my favourite Sikhi Forum !! To celebrate Vaisakhi I am posting perhaps my most favourite painting of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. This image is from P S Padam's 'Gobind Saagar' - The image is from a Pracheen Saroop of Sri Dasam Granth - compiled under the guidance of Mata Sundari Ji. The painting dates from around CE 1700 - this date together with it being pasted into a saroop of Sri Dasm Granth complied by Mata Ji gives it special significance. It can be argued that it is perhaps one of the earliest portraits of Guru Sahib perhaps even a contemporary one. Enjoy ! *From Gobind Saagar - Piara Singh Padam. Patiala 1991 Ranjit Singh 'Freed'
  23. Gurfateh ! Trust you are all well - I have received some messages asking if I am still 'alive' as I haven't posted for a while - Thank you for your concern !, I am in rude health ! just been really busy at work and have a backlog of new books and pics to sort through (enjoying 'In The Masters Presence' at the moment !!). However I am not so busy that I can't bring to your attention this Wonderful set of images. Taken from 'photosbymonicamichele' flickr collection they show the ruins of a Gurdwara and Samadh in Fateh Khan (District Dera Ghazni Khan - Punjab Pakistan) http://www.flickr.com/photos/photosbymonic...57612422631501/ Taking this picture as a starting point I have figured out it must be The Gurudwara Kot Bhai Than Singh, Distt Attock that is described here; http://www.allaboutsikhs.com/gurudwaras-in...stt-attock.html This means the Gurdwara , Samaadh and frescoes must date from the time of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Baba Than Singh was an influential figure among 'Potohar' Sikhs , If my memory serves me well I think there is a 'Baba Than Singh Chowk' in Ludhiana City (?? ). As always any input from respected members and readers most welcome and much appreciated. I'll get to the bit you want to see now - the pictures ! - I've cherry picked a few of my favourites - I particularly like the fresco of Guru Hargobind Sahib with Bidhi Chand and the fresco of Guru Gobind Singh with the Panj Piarey - the Piarey with beautiful Dumaley, decorated with Chakars and Shasters. Bhai Mokham Singh is shown as an Akali Nihang with Farla. There are lots of pictures so DO visit the Flickr page as the pictures are amazing - if particularly upsetting because of the graffiti and disfiguring of faces - however the higher up frescoes are mostly intact. Enjoy ! http://www.flickr.com/photos/photosbymonic...57612422631501/ Enjoy these wonderful images - please post any information you have - Waheguru Bless photographers like these they are doing a sterling job !! GurFateh Ranjit Singh 'Freed'
