  1. For that kind of money you could get a superb puratan Khukri, hold onto your cash and when I see one for sale Ill let you know.
  2. Like everything there has to be a balance, everyone should put in the effort to learn some kind of combat discipline to the highest level they can achieve, im not talking about half arsed training for a few weeks, im talking about pure dedicated training in and out of the classes to ensure you can deal with confrontation in order to protect yourself on the street. This will prepare you for any trouble on the street. Alongside that, you should aim to avoid trouble as much as you can, understanding where trouble is and how to avoid it, how to deal with troublesome people, knowing when to walk away from confrontation, understanding your own abilities to deal with your potential opponent(s) etc. These two combined should keep you more safe then arming yourself with illegal tools in case of a panga kicking off. Real knife fighting, swordsmanship, or even hand to hand combat cannot be learnt over the net or on youtube, find a good teacher, regardless of style and make a start. Laadli Fauj, there are good schools out there which teach good combat skills, go out and find them. Do some searches on the net for your area and then look for reviews.
  3. Regardless of weapons, sprays, batons, claws, guns, fight ending techniques, they are all useless unless you can actually execute them when you need it. Pulling out a pepper spray when you havent trained in its use could bring you more harm then good, using a small nakha is hard when you dont know how to hide it from your opponent and place it at the exact right time and exact right place to ensure your opponent cannot retreat or overpower you. Telling someone to rely on a kick in the groin is fine, but doing it is a completely different game against an opponent who isnt going to stand there to take it. Peoples main focus should be on hard dedicated training which will open their minds to the variables, physcology and strategies of real combat. The likelyhood of a stand off in the street in a knife fight is low, the likely hood of being stabbed in the back when your not looking, or someone putting a knife around ur neck while ur distracted by another person is more possible. To overcome these issues awareness is the key, understanding ur surroundings and what is dangerous and what isnt, which people are possible threats, what areas are troublesome and which are easy escape routes will help you more in modern day life than putting lipstick on a peice of plastic and going at it with a friend. Learning how to difuse potential confrontation is more useful then letting a fight kick off and then trying to survive. A good knife fighter wont need colour on a white t shirt to tell them they been cut, they should be able to realise that, in a knife fight it is unlikely you will walk away without being cut in some way or another, what is important is to avoid damage to vital areas. Above that, stay away from places where threats are high, if your going into clubs or dodgy places the chances of a fight kicking off are much more, its easy to look for trouble if you want it.
  4. Does this mean that all Nihangs who supported Baba Joginder Singh will accept their union and accept Balbir as the head of Budha Dal?
  5. Taking the bulls head whilst its being pulled and braced against a wooden log isnt that hard as the tension and angle will allow the heavy kukri to easily go through. There is a tradition in Chatka amongst Nihangs, where they also make the bhujangis watch a chatka from a young age to allow them to overcome the natural inhibition of blood/killing/death
  6. I personally thought it was too wishy washy
  7. Please dont skew and distort the meanings of Gurbani, post the whole shabad to understand the teachings rather then one liners which can be misinterpretted.
  8. Because its a root vegetable which is high in rajas and tamas properties according to Ayurveda. However if that is your stance, then you wouldnt eat a whole load of foods apart from fresh fruit, fresh vegies, yoghurt and use only some pressed oils in your diet. The key is balance, a small amount of garlic or onions is not bad for you, plus if you live a dynamic lifestyle with plenty of excercise you can "burn" the exessive rajas and tamas off in a good way.
  9. Discussions which should be based upon the search for truth and Gurmat have just turned into petty name calling and attacks on each other. How Sad! Even though I disagree with the beliefs of Khalsa Fauj, I disagree completely with the action to attempt to beat him up over his view. Beating someone up does not make them change their view, if anything it reinforces them more within the person and brings out more hatred for the future. Rather then argue and "debate" with the anti dasam granth groups, it is best to increase actual parchar amongst the masses about the relevance of Sri Dasam Granth within the Panth. Let people actually hear/read what is written and explain to them the banis tuk by tuk, why waste time with those who have already made their minds up and have no intention of changing it. The sad thing is, even though Sri Aad Granth is within every Gurdwara within the world, how many people within the sangat can understand the tuks fully, let alone being about to extract the essence of the teachings. Sri Dasam Granth will also be treated in the same way, with massive programs taking place where the people attending cannot even understand the words being read out. I hate how people throw shabads around like they are an authority on Sikhism, and then use some bani to counter attack other sections of bani, making it out like Gurbani is contradictory! I wonder out of all the people argueing on both sides, and calling Sri Dasam Granth as Sri Dasam Guru Granth (overnight change) have actually sat down and read the whole granth fully, in punjabi, and not from Sridasam.org
  10. I dont really have much knowledge on etching as ive never experimented with it, but different types of chemicals ie nitrates and sulphates etc would be used depending on the type of steel and type of weapon. Different chemicals react differently with each steel. Im guessing the same forms of chemicals would have been used traditionally, but i doubt it would have been something as simple as just lemon juice. What the Chemicals do is change the top layer of the blades colour by reacting with the metal - so where you have pure iron the blade goes white and where you have different steels they will turn into a blackish or brownish colour. With the metals all twisted and intertwined it creates the pattern which you see on genuine wootz blades. When you clean the blade the top layer which has been etched loses its pattern because the chemicals which are used to react with the blade are "washed" away.
  11. If you clean or polish the blade, the woots pattern will dissapear so its not visible to the eye. The pattern will need to be etched out again with chemicals for it to become visible again. Use a clamp or a vice to set the blade secure to a bench so your edge will always have the same angle. Khanjars dont really need an edge because they are not cutting weapons, they are more peircing, the edge angle will be too high for it to get the cutting ability of say a kard or pesh kabz. The Jamdhars edge should be on the "Hathi Kan" (elephants ear) and near the top, again these do not really require much of an edge because it is more of a bludgening weapon than a cutting one.
  12. Depends on the state of the shastar before you start polishing, use emery paper and water for cleaning and a whetstone for sharpening. Sharpening is not easy and comes with allot of practise, to put a proper edge on a weapon should take you a few hours. If youve never put an edge on, start with a small kard to appreciate the best angles which generate the best burr for cutting. Not all metals hold good edges, so dont waste ur time on trying to sharpen a poor quality shastar to only find it loses its edge as soon as u put it in the miyan.
  13. If you can find a proper Bujinkan (Ninjitsu) school which is run by students of Dr Hatsumi that would be a good place to start. Proper Combat Tai Chi is hard to find but that is also good if you can find the right teacher.
  14. The quote by Gyani Gyan Singh relating to Shastarvidya can be read here: http://www.ik13.org/PDFS/TWK_1.pdf Download the PDF and scroll to Page 22, the quote makes up part of the Bhoomika where Gyani Gyan Singh relates the circumstances of his time.
  15. So what the Panth has decided for the past 300+ yrs is not enough for you, and will only follow decisions when they are in favour of your beliefs? Ive never really been bothered about argueing over Sri Dasam Granth over the interweb, as its impossible to change the minds of those who have already made them up. Best to read and contemplate the bani yourselfs then waste energy replying to rouge Sikhs. Regardless of anything else in Sri Dasam Granth, the person who denies the authorship of Jaap Sahib to Guru Gobind Singh, doesnt even deserve being talked to let being heard in debate.
  16. How much difference is there in this pothi and the original Gurbani Path Darshan? Any reason for the edits?
  17. Chatanga, do a regime of Dand Behtka and you'll be fit in no time.
  18. Of course Chatanga, it works both ways when searching for truth. I dont view everyone and everything as suspicious if it differs from my view, nor do I feel I have to swear or call others assholes. I am now being accused of Gur Ninda because I asked for a page refference! Its better to discuss things and come to a conclusion, rather then push everything under the carpet for someone else to discover and then not having the foundations to tackle it.
  19. Chatanga Sahib, as a mutual exchange of information, will you provide a scan of the passage where Gyani Gyan Singh states that Guru Gobind Singh took feem? All history should be read in context to the time space circumstance such things were written in, cross refferencing them with other historical accounts in an attempt to extract the correct truth. Having the belief that "If I dont believe it happened, it didnt happen" doesnt really wash when trying to learn history, your better off not reading at all.
  20. Ill get a scan of the pages up for you so you can clear your shanka.
  21. Where has anyone said that we should worship the devi above nirgun vaheguroo?
  22. Great deflection Chatanga Sahib, I never knew you was an Antarjami that you can tell the inner thoughts of people who died decades ago! The quote is indeed from the Sarbloh website, if you wish to disregard it purely on its source then that is your own choice, the last time I was asked to provide the original text as proof to show any tampering (Twarikh Guru Khalsa in regards to the decline of Shastarvidiya) it was proved that the translation was 100% correct. No one would provide a refference with titles, authors and page numbers and then do a incorrect translation as that surely damages the integrity of the source. Its not hard to get hold of these books and check up yourself. If you are really lazy, Ill get the page scanned in for you so you can check yourself, or will you then twist and sqew the reality, and then brush it off as gyani gyan singhs hunger for money and fame, or some agenda? So much for searchers of truth. No human is infallible, if people make a mistake then accept they made a mistake, no need to blacken someone elses face in order to keep anothers clean.
  23. I heard on the radio last night that 3 people were arrested in connection to this stabbing. Searched and found this: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/6984387/Three-arrested-over-murder-of-heroic-Sukhwinder-Singh.html
  24. I have only ever known of tampering of Sikh texts by Sikhs. Please refer to page 185, Volume 1 of Sri Sarbloh Granth Steek by Baba Santa Singh to see their comment on the editing of Suraj Parkash and Sri Nanak Parkash.
