The most wondrous tale of deception of all, relating the endeavour of the humble dust-like human spirit seeking to attain onto Mahakal/Brahm, is found in the final charitter 405. Upon its conclusion, the Guru pens the most beautiful of prayers to which justice cannot be done in any translation. Penned, it is said in the thick of battle by the Guru on making an arrow tip his quill and his own blood the ink, it has the most magical of effects upon one’s mind, heart and soul. It is a decidedly heartfelt and exquisite plea to the supreme deity Brahm/Mahakal to protect the Guru and his Sikhs from their evil enemies who sought their very annihilation. This supplication, the Benti Chaupai, encapsulates the very spiritual essence of sikhi; the absolute unstinting belief in nirguna transcendental Brahm. If any Sikh has doubts with regards to Pakhyaan Charitter, let them, on considering the exquisite nature of this final prayer, reflect how the rest of the work can be so poor if its ending is as such. Beautiful as the Benti Chaupai is, so is the poetry of the rest of the Pakhyaan Charitter. On concluding this prayer Guru Gobind Singh lays out the benefits of listening to and reflecting upon the Pakhyaan Charitter:"

    Waheguru Ji
If your using a malaa you can say Waheguru three times on each bead. So you will be saying Waheguru 324 times on one round.
The number seems high because dass is counting japs done while sitting, walking and other activities.   So the mind will always be preoccupied with simran.

I think it depends on the spirtual stage of the sikh.  I am a beginner and failed many times, love doing simran slowly while listening with my ears and could do over 2000 in an hour.

Was listening to a bibi’s account the other day where she wanted to do simran in the early hours but kept on falling asleep. She said a voice resembling a mahapursh would come beside her and say in the sweetest voice “Na bibi jago, simran karo”

From my limited understanding so far with Guru's grace, after reading the essence is Naam.
Recite, chant, sing, meditate Naam &  Gurbani.  Daya/Compassion comes up a lot.  Abandoning the taste of Indriyas including tongue as well.
Guru Gobind Singh Ji talks about Alap Ahar Sulap si nindra...meaning little food & little sleep/lethargy inertia.
Baba Deep Singh ji, first mukhi of Damdami Taksal , took amrit from Guru Gobind Singh Ji maharaj , and got blessing that his Naam Rass will never fade even if his head is cut off. He wielded khanda at age of 80 due to Naam Rass. And everyone is familiar with Sant Jarnail Singh Ji , their intense bhagti, sewa, intellect & their fearlessness.
So Naam Rass is essential to win this battle against Mind & of Life. If your goal is Naam, and Prabhu Prapti , one can decide which food or how much sleep helps them for achieving their goal. Each to their own.
Sukhmani Sahib mentions that one can live without food, solely on Naam and singing the praises of God. Sant Harnam Singh Ji rampur khede vale experimented with it , and lived without food for 40 days.
I think everyone should atleast complete one reading of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji, reading 1-2 angs everyday, reading the various translations, along with practicing their hukam of Amritvela, Naam Chanting, control of Indriyas, Brahmacharya, Daya/Compassion, Sewa etc.  All the answers unfold themselves, and slowly no queries remain.

    Read all the above.
My understanding is medicine is just one aspect of treating mental illness.  You would need family support, surrounded by positive people, remove negative people and situations from your life, physical activity to improve physical and mental fitness, counselling and must do your homework with counselling, enhancement of spiritual journey and above all PRAYERS.
It does take years/decades to fight with your thoughts. These meds block the thoughts and do give side-effects.
    Bhul Chuk Maaf!

This question and answer exchange can easily degenerate.
To possibly prevent that from happening  and to answer the question you asked read Bhai Gurdas - or Guru Gobind Singhs Bachitar Natak (which explains why he had to take birth) and the answer will be clear. Else, you will spend your time in vivaad and reach nowhere.
Once you have done that, dive into Gurbani and the number of pearls you will be able to accumulate are only limited by your sincerity of purpose and effort combined with Vahigurus bakshish.
That might mean staying away from miscellaneous you tube channels and Quora etc...are you ready for the challenge?

There are different stages. Unfortunately, Sikhs are obsessed with Brahmgyani & Dasam Duaar.
    S. Sahib ji has said that he does not talk about Dasam Duaar. There are many smaller milestones that needs to be discussed amd known before talking abt Dasam Duaar and such high-level talk.
Qualities of Brahmgyani are clearly given in Sukhmani Sahib

Interestingly the answer to the young man is in Sukhmani Sahib, first Ashtpadi...Prabh Keah Simran Jatti...Satti.....This viakhiaya has been done earlier today (22.02.2021) by Giani Jangbir Singh at Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib, Abchal Nagar...I am posting the link below (the Jaati part is at 55.33 mins)..Suggest you hear the entire series (this is the fourth instalment).
Further In Salok Seshkriti this issue has been addressed..."Hea Kaamang..Narak Bisramang Bahu Jonee Bharamvarh...(Salok Sehaskrati M 5 , Ank1358)... All Sadhu Sants have done the jaap of the Salok Seshkriti for hours..that to me is the only way to bring this under control, as per Gurbani...whether you do religious education or any education it is ONLY with the bakshish of Vahiguru that this can be brought under control...applying force to control this - while advocated by certain sects - is not the Gurmat way...Our way is ardas, and recitation of shabads ....over a period of time its intensity will reduce if you are genuinely desirous of that goal...
You can hear the entire Salok Sehaskriti katha by going to www.gurmatveechar.com>audio>katha>puratan katha>Sant Kartar Singh>click on second folder which relates to Salok Sehaskarti.. (Go to Volume 14 and at 24 mins this katha on Kaam starts)
May the Gurus Bakshish be with you..and what you are experiencing is absolutely normal...will settle with bani and ardas

A1)The Simran is always done by the mind, in order to get purified(Prabh ka simran man kee mael jaae), and once purified to an extent, it can enter into the spiritual subtle realms within.
A2) We are not the mann, we are the jeev atma, a spark of the consciousness/Jot  of Satpurush. Yet we are tied knot with the mind in each birth to remain prisoners in the creation of Kal and Maya.
And unless we are born as human beings, and with the aid and guidance of the teachings in the Bani which in short and beautifully says:
Eko Naam hukum hae Nanak Satgur dheea bujhae jeeo.
And the Simran of Nam is also the cutter of that otherwise tight knot between the mind and soul.
The Nam simran, is the one medicine for all our maladies, and the method to eternal bliss and union with our origin, Satnam.

hsingh6 reacted to anhadd in Sweet Nectar Taste in Mouth From Simran
Rass comes from nabhi; this is the sweet taste in the mouth. When doing swass swass, Simran (doing Simran in mind following breaths), when the swass hits the nabhi (going down), it gathers Rass, and when the swass comes upwards, the nectar-filled breath is collected from the nabhi and comes into the mouth.
    ਰਸੁਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿਬਿਖੁਪਰਹਰਿਤਿਆਗਿਆ ॥
I have gathered in the Lord's sublime essence and cast out the poison.
There comes a stage where you begin it get it a lot, and so naturally, you do swass swass Simran more vigorously and hence get more rass.
Amrit is a higher avastha; this drops from the middle of the head (Dasam dwaar). This then trickles down; It feels beautiful and almost tickles, lol. Just as a shower head is put under less pressure when your head is underneath, it slowly trickles down; it's the same sensation. When you feel where your joora is, beginning to feel wet, focus (dhiaan) on the middle of the head; this way, it will start to trickle. With guru jis kirpa, Maharaj will bless you with it whenever you focus on it throughout the day. When this Amrit is trickling, it comes down with a sound, like a jingle sound. Once Shabad gets activated, you'll be able to recognise the sounds and know what's coming, just as a mother can identify the baby's cries as the baby is hungry or tired. Similarly, the gursikh will realise that when they hear one sound, it will be amrit coming, and another will take them into samadhi.
A gursikh should continuously do swass swass Simran and gather rass. What happens a lot is once one gets into pasanti avastha, as Simran is internalised, they do it thoughts alone. However, this way, rass is not gathered from nabhi. Simran should be done in mind but following the breaths. When rass starts to come, one should naturally carry on and drink rass. Gradually with guru kirpa, one will feel the swass coming up from nabhi (leaving nabhi) and then hitting back again when swass comes down. Then it feels like your whole stomach is massive and opening up and coming down. you will literally feel the swass leave the nabhi and then hit back down, like a very soft punch. This is good as it means the body prepares to get rass from Dasam dwaar. swass is a pump for rass in this avastha. Deeper Abhyaas leads you to feel your swass coming up to your forehead and down below nabhi.
swass swass Simran will lead to many sounds being heard in your ears, ignore these and follow Simran. With guru kirpa, a very high-pitched sound will come from the top of the head (Dasam dwaar). It will be a very high pitch. This is a sign that you're close to Amrit. At the point from which sound comes, focus on it and keep doing swass swass Simran. At that point, Amrit will begin to pour from your head.

Slowly, slowly, slowly, very slowly, the drops of Ambrosial Nectar trickle down.

The Guru has bathed me in the pool of Ambrosial Nectar, and all my dirty sins and mistakes have been washed away. ||3||
    swass swass Simran
Do this as much as possible all the time. a time will come when the breath naturally comes upwards it will automatically do Simran. this will lead to 24/7 Abhyaas.
forgive me for all my mistakes Sangat ji, I am the biggest papi.
