  1. Ooopps Bhul Chuk Maaf karni! Sangat, please do ardas for this paapi
  2. Try chattar singh/jeevan singh publishers in Amritsar. They would be my 'go to' people for such hard to find books.
  3. Then there are those who a suffering and hungry. WHy shouldn't a person take food home to an elderly family member who cant make it to the gurdwara. Should gurdwaras be making such decisions as to who can or cannot eat?
  4. I think it was N30 who said the 4 states of a sikhs avastha: Shariat, Marfat, Haqiqat etc etc. Anyone know the meanings of these terms? Also these words seem to come from Arabic. Is the philosophy behind it from islam(/sufiism) as well?
  5. As shaheediyan just mentioned : baansri , also the beeni and that double 'beeni' like instrument. But also various drum-type instruments ie the gaghar.
  6. I know ifs often done in India , but it seems a recent trend in the uk. I 've seen notices on a few gurdwaras here 'banning' it as its against the 'maryada'.
  7. Only ever come across Amar Kirtan and Amrit Kirtan. BTW I understand TAANTI SAAJ to mean STRINGED INSTRUMENTS. So in grmat sangeet does this exclude all other classical and folk instruments?
  8. True talk about 'feeding the fed' and 'mutual back slapping'. Though having said that as a kid I used to see an Arab musalman doing seva at Smethwick GNG. i know he was an Arab coz used to go to school with his grand daughter.
  9. No I haven't been their to learn. Though I did think that their classes took place Sunday mornings. I would contact them first before popping down, incase no one is there. Re. the instruments. i'd say wait until you start learning and then ask your teacher to recommend suppliers. He/she will be able to guide you better in terms of what to look for a price wise.
  10. I've often heard of people doing this in the past - which I believe to be the norm. Even I did this. But, of late I have been seeing posters around langar halls that actually state it is 'against Sikh Rehat Maryada' to take food away from the langar.
  11. Just realised there is a supposed 'maryada' that we cannot take food away from the langar. We can only eat there and then. So that puts a dampener on people taking food for their families at home.
  12. Many would have heard from news channel about the mushrooming growth of food banks in the UK/Europe. Whereas two or three years ago there were just a few dozen in the UK, now there are a few hundred and growing fast. My question is are there any gurdwaras in the UK that have set up a similar system to help feed their local (non-sikh) community? I would have thought that with the langar system up and running gurdwaras would be at the forefront of helping local communities. But I havn't heard of any gurdwaras taking the initiative here.
  13. Try the naamdhari gurdwara in B'ham - but only if you want the best! otherwise try your local gurdwara. otherwise no better way to prepare or get started than to find a good Guru. anything you do beforehand is just procrastination.
  14. Strongest, fittest , weak etc hold varying meanings depending on time, and circumstance. Its very subjective. In one age muscles are a strength in another age it is intellect, but always common sense . WHich is anything but 'common.' Khalsa like all other groups are subject to natures laws. If they are worth it or deserving they will survive and thrive; otherwise just like all other groups since the beginning of time they will perish and give way to something better.
  15. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti'h. That is the basic law of nature, life and the universe. Nothing else. Welcome to the sa.com forum KGM.
  16. I always knew these ramgarhia folk had tons of money. I would assume that they will get this built and then it will be empty diwan halls until SUnday mornings. I wonder if they can fill such large 'temples of money and power'? Oh well I'm sure its a good financial investment for them.
  17. monkeys wearing burka and not allowing Mrs Monkey out without a male family companion.
  18. I told my family to do because they absolutely beleive that someone had done 'toona' on them. When I was advised I was told that CDV is ideal for such 'problems, whether they are real, or perceived by ones mind'. For me it did help, for my family: they were too scared of the bani to even consider it. They were too comfortable in their misery; which unfortunely is true for many people. They find solace in the depressive, pain of the status quo and are too afraid to act to gain some improvement.
  19. I wouldn't really know now. All I can say is dont think too much about past, 'what ifs?', etc. If you start dwelling on the past,or even current status too much then it just turn s you mental and depressive. Having said that, it really is the hardest thing to do. Being 'intelligent animals' its only our thought process that separates us from the animal world. unfortunately many people start doing tooo much of the thinking and less of the action. SImply decided what you want to do and do it.
  20. I drove down Birmingham New Road today from Wolves to B'ham. There is a, old GKN factory building there, it had a nishan sahib outside. Looked like a new gurdwara being built. Anyone know what's happening there?
  21. No gurbani is the exclusive preserve of amritdhari's. (despite what they say)
  22. I think keeping falcons is more of a status symbol of kings. esp regarding the cost of keeping/training it. Similar to keeping modern wealthy keeping racing horses or yachts. or even fighting dogs.
  23. Apparently heard on BBC that Fauja Singh is running in todays London Marathon.
