Suniyai- Japji Sahib the meaning of the lines?

Recommended Posts

Waheguru ji ka khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh.

I was wondering what the meaning of the 7. pauri in japji sahib is where it talks about the importance of listening. it states:

Suṇiai siḏẖ pīr sur nāth.

Listening-the Siddhas, the spiritual teachers, the heroic warriors, the yogic masters.

Suṇiai ḏẖaraṯ ḏẖaval ākās.

Listening-the earth, its support and the Akaashic ethers.

Suṇiai ḏīp loa pāṯāl.

Listening-the oceans, the lands of the world and the nether regions of the underworld.

it talks about listening, and then mentions some figures etc. what do these gain by listening, does it say?

The next lines have your answer:

Nanak, Bhagta Sad Vigas; Suniay Dukh Paap Ka Naas.

The suniyai lines follow on from the gaviah lines about who sings and does sift salah of akaal purakh..  These are the 1st "gavieh" lines and refer to sift salah on our world here.

The suniyai is telling us about ALL that listen to the Primal shabad, the Ik-ong. . Refers to this the planet, the skies, the stars in fact the whole of consciousness hears this primal shabad. YES, it will be heard i space with sukham ears

Later in  japji, the gavieh lines come again, but are referring to all those "mannai" (chosen faithful ones), th=tand at sing outside the darbar of Akaal purakh. VERY IMPORTANT to understand this because the same lines are repeated exactly in so dar rag asa of rehiras for the evening.  There is another important reason why the same so dar keha and gavai tudhn  pangtees need to be recited in the evening.

The devoteess are ever in bliss. yes that was also what i thought, but what does this have to do with oceans, lands, nether regions, earth etc?

It's about them listening because they CAN hear it!

Kavi Santokh Singh gives a plurality of meanings to the suniai lines, - the first being a praise of the art of listening. By listening (to peoplw with wisdoom and knowledge), the siddhs, peers, sur etc attained their high status. by listening to people of knowledge you aquire knowledge about the planets, solar systems etc.. So it has more of a secular tone to it - listen to people with knowledge.. However, the last meaning is given as specifically as listening to the name of God , hence a more of a spiritual meaning, which is also the one given by the normal english translation, Faridkot teeka Sahib Singh teeka and Lucky's analysis above.

Here is another interpretation:

Suanie pauri- updesh of satguru nanak dev ji is for beginners to engage deeply in deep deep listening deeply listening to shabad/gyan (mahavak) with surat(consciouness) as shabad and its gyan(mahavak)- eternally inherently absolutely present in every one and every time.

Manaie pauri would be deep acknowledgement/acceptance of mahavak-shabad gyan with full receptivity and full acceptance of what is-divine will without any resistance and go towards in the meditation which would further purify our surat(intuitive understanding/consciousness)

Nidashan- deep contemplation or understanding or meditative abidance or feeling of (mahavak gyan- which further purify one surat and will blossom gyan flower in one's surat (intuitive consciousness) firstly as undertanding- parkosh gyan and then as realization- aparkosh gyan-bhramgyan

Sunye Laigee Sehaj Dhyan ||

I look at the above gurbani pankiti as - glimpse or abidance in sehaj avastha-equipoise equilibrium ease (sehaj) while deep listening in quietude.

Your thoughts?

As Sehaj can refer to patience, one possible meaning could be that by listening to Gurbani, your dhyan will gradually become intense. Maybe also advising the spiritual seeker to be patient in his approach, meaning not to expect very quick results (it will take time to increase concentration levels) in his spiritual progress.

Sehaj could also mean naturally. So, another meaning could be that if you keep listening to Gurbani with concentration, you will achieve the state where you will be able to naturally (or easily) focus on the Shabad (whether originating inside or outside the body).

Sehaj could also mean peace. So, another meaning could be that if you keep your focus on the Shabad and keep listening to Gurbani, then you will attain intuitive/eternal peace.

If one listens to Gurbani in a peaceful environment, then that person will be able to concentrate better on it.

If one listens to Gurbani with a peaceful (calm and composed) mind, then that person will be able to concentrate better on it.

Sehaj can mean Gyan too. Therefore,

If one concentrates on Gurbani with Gyan, then that person will be able to listen to the various sounds (Anhat Naads) present within the body.

If one concentrates on Gurbani with Gyan, then that person will be able to listen to the Anhad Naad (voice/sound of Waheguru) within the body.

Sehaj could mean unshakable. Therefore,

By listening to Gurbani, one will attain unshakable concentration/samadhi. This unshakable state will not be affected, even if the body is cut limb by limb (Shaheed Baba Mani Singh jee), or if the body is cut into two halves (Shaheed Bhai Mati Das jee), etc.

Sehaj could mean habit. Therefore,

Making the act of listening to Gurbani as a habit will ensure that a person attains equilibrium poise.

The above tuk is also related to a very deep Pauri in Sri Anand Sahib jee.

This Pauri answer how one can attain Sehaj Avastha and what happens when one reaches that stage.
