Interesting shabad I came across by Bhai Gurdas Ji:

bhalaa buraa saisaar vichi jo aaiaa tisu sarapar maranaa|

The evil and noble exist in this world and whosoever came here, has to die one day. *

raavan tai raamachand vaangi mahaan balee|arhi kaaranu karanaa|

The brave persons like Ravan and Ram also became the cause and doers of wars.

jaru jaravaanaa vasi kari anti adharam raavani man dharanaa|

Controlling the mighty age, i.e. conquering the time, Ravan adopted evil in his heart (and stole Sita).**

raamachandu niramalu purakhu dharamahu saair padar taranaa|

Ram was a spotless person and due to his sense of dharma (responsibility), even the stones floated in ocean. ***

buriaaeeahu raavanu gaiaa kaalaa tikaa par tria haranaa|

On account of wickedness Ravan went away (was killed) with the stigma of stealing another's wife.

raamaainu jugi jugi atalu say udharay jo aaay saranaa|

Ramayan (the story of Ram) is ever firm (in the mind of people) and whosoever seeks shelter (in it) goes across (the world ocean). ****

jas apajas vichi nidar daranaa ॥18॥

Dharma-abiding people earn glory in the world and those who undertake evil adventures get infamy.

(Bhai Gurdas Ji, vaar 31, pauri 18)

Commentary/Explanation

* Line 1) Bhai Gurdas explains that there are good and bad people that come into this world, however everyone/everything that comes into this world is still bound by Death and ultimately everyone/everything will die. This being said this does not disvalue the role of Avatar's or Saints. Bhai Gurdas is just letting the reader know at the start that Nirgun worship is highest I think

** Line 3) Bhai Ji explains that Raavana conquered the world, his kingdom was unmatched. However he let Adharam, unrightousness, grow within his heart and he stole the wife of Rama, which was Sita.

*** Bhai Gurdas Ji says that Rama Chandra was a pure being, and because of his following of Dharma (rightousness) stone rose up. This refers to when Rama went to Sri Lanka from India, stones floated up from the ocean and made a bridge from India to Lanka.

**** This is a very interesting line because it resembles exaclty what Guru Gobind SIngh Ji wrote (i.e. Ram katha jug jug atal, sab koe bhakat neit).

In the Dasam Granth, Guru Gobind Singh Ji talks about Valmiki (the writer of the Ramayana, or story of Ram)

On page 613, Guru Gobind Singh Ji says:

The story of his immaculate poem which is really wonderful accomplished and powerful; this story (Ramayan) is even re-composed today

His poem is said to be extremely pure and each of its episodes is spotless, sanctified and marvellous. 6.

According to the instructions given in the Ramayana, we should ever be in the service of the Lord; we should get up early in the morning and remember His Name;

Through the Glory of His Name, many enemies are killed and the charities of innumberable types are bestowed; that Lord, also keeping His name on our heads, protects the ignorant people like us.
