Sainis, Suniars urge govt for inclusion in OBC list

Gurdaspur, July 31

Two prominent Punjab-based castes - Sainis and Suniars (goldsmiths) - which account for a sizeable vote bank in the state, have urged the Punjab Government to include their castes in its OBC list so that they are in a position to avail employment opportunities offered by the state government from time to time.

The Central Government has already included these two castes in its list of Other Backward Castes (OBC). However, over the past few years, the Punjab Government has steadfastly refused to acknowledge their status in its OBC list.

This means that people of these castes can only avail job opportunities provided by the Central Government and their wards can also seek admission to professional colleges on reservation basis. However, people of these two castes can neither avail employment opportunities offered by the state government on reservation basis nor can they take the reservation route as far as admission to professional colleges is concerned.

According to information gathered by a local lawyer Ranbir Singh under the RTI Act, the state government has put 69 castes under the head of BCs and OBCs and Sainis and Suniars do not figure in the list. Leaders of these castes are livid over the Punjab Government’s “erroneous and illogical” decision of not including them in the state government’s BC/OBC list.

Manmohan Singh Bhagowalia, general secretary of the SAD (BC wing), said: “Despite having their roots in Punjab they have been ignored by their own parent state. This means that people of these castes can’t avail job opportunities provided by the state to BCs and OBCs.”

“The Central Government admits that these castes fall in the OBC list while the Punjab Government says we are neither BCs nor OBCs. Sainis and Suniars can avail benefits of the Central Government but there is a catch her Job opportunities of the Central government are very limited as compared to opportunities provided by the state government,” said Nidhi Saini, a Taragarh-based RTI activist.

I find it hypocritically strange that everyone talks about the evils of caste system. yet to push ahead their agendas all these sikhs/panjabis/indian organisations shamelessly push their caste name about. Even if it means 'de-basing' themselves by being labelled 'backward' or 'lowly'!

I wonder when the Brahmins will declare themselves 'backward'?

Brahmins are already in the list of backward class in Karnataka or one of the South Indian state. They have 4% reservations in jobs and education institutes.Anyway Humans are Selfish by nature what everybody thinks is of "apna fayada" whether it is by mean of caste ,religion ,region ,gender etc

The problem is the reservation system itself. It does not take account of the fact that there might be rich dalits and poor Jats. It just assumes that all dalits are poor and all jats are millionaires! The reason that castes which would never ordinarily consider themselves as backward trying for inclusion into the OBC list is that they can then at least go for jobs and college seats on an equal footing. At the moment a job will be offered to a dalit who has just scraped a pass in their degree and denied to a jat, saini or suniar who might have passed with flying colours. When people claim that the educational system in Punjab is down the toilet then the reason is that the teaching jobs have been cornered by chamars who know they do not need to study to get a good pass, just show their sc certificate and they can walk into the job. It is not selfishness that is making other castes fight for the obc status.

Tamil nadu has 69% reservations highest in country yet they are the most educated people in India. The type of inequality we have in India

,the reservation itself is required O/W hardly any rural kid will get job as the best education facilities are only available in cities and that too for those who can afford most expensive schools and then tutors.

The reservation should be implemented so that poorest and lowest in the society can get benefit

You are one funny singh tony - you only come here to trash Islam or defend jattism! lol

How am I defending jattism? Reservation which at one time was needed has now created a situation where people whose background is Jat, Tarkhan, Saini, Kamboh and Rajput now have no hope of ever getting a government job no matter how highly educated they might be.

I would take your comment more seriously if you actually knew anything about reservation in Punjab. Funny how the two people on this board who have never been to Punjab think they are some kind of authority on it.

The problem is the reservation system itself.

it is a problem because it has become a hindrance rather than a help to the country. it was included in the constitution of hindostan by ambedkar to give the backwards classes a chance to help themselves, and probably it has done some good, but at this moment in time it has become a joke, and is actaully backwards in itself.

Students rioted over this issue in delhi 2 years ago, as lower performing students were taking jobs as doctors they had no right to, whereas students with better grades were denied doctors jobs because they were from different or lets say higher castes. It should be done away with. It is so unfair. I would be well angry myself, if it happened to me.

And a great point made by Tony, that shit teachers will only breed shit students. Gurbani kind of hits upon this by telling us, " A guru who is blind, his sikhs(disciples) will be blind".

I dont think that the cretins in delhi are even aware of the long term repercussions of this law.

There were no riots in Delhi 2 years ago.Since the constitution was implemented there is 22.5% reservation for SC/sts in jobs as well as education institutions. After that there was still debate that some backward communities need reservation.so Mandal commssion was formed .Many communities that were never backward or oppressed sensed this an oppurtunity to get reservation like Yadav's Jaats' of Rajasthan Gujjar's ,Maratha's etc because of their numbers Govt accepted their demand. In 1990 Mandal commission was implemented and reservation was increased from 22.5% to 50% in Govt Jobs as Supreme court of India has set up that resrvation cannot exceed 50% .Then in 1990 there were massive riots for 2 months mostly sponsered by congress party which led to fall of VP singh's govt.In 2006 Govt again decided to increase reservation in education institutions to 50% which led to massive protests by doctors as the doctors which were pursuing MBBS were afraid that they will be unable to secure a seat in specialisation. This time Govt just bowed to their demand and accepted that they will increase seats in all education institutions and only then reservation will be implemented

As I see it , the reservation system is simply an officially sanctioned cronyism and nepotism.

Instead of going forward India is going backward; just give it a few decades and the results will appear.

BTW there is a Bollywood film being released on this subject. Apparently some states - inc Pb, have banned the film.

Stars Amitab Bachchan and Saif Ali Khan. Reports say that Dalits object that a high caste Saif is acting as a dalit in the film!

Democracy had only 1 meaning and that is power to majority .Now OBC and SC/ST has the majority .Everybody knows that reservation is not good for long term but there is no way you can just want to upset majority votebank.

Even Ambedkar states that Reservation is like cruch and if any community get used to it then they will never learn to walk ,he also statesd that reservation should be abolished in 10-20 years but nothing like that happened.
