What Is The Difference Between Jaap And Simran?

Recommended Posts

I can't think of any I thought they were the same thing. However simran has something to do with remembering death and jaap with abihaas and surt with concentration however both are applied. I think our hindu veers may have deeper insights to this due to the sanskrit origins of the words.

Wiki says:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simran
Simran (Punjabi: ਸਿਮਰਨ, Hindi: सिमरन ) is a Punjabi word derived from the Sanskrit word स्मरण (smaraṇa, "the act of remembering or calling to mind, remembrance, reminiscence, recollection of"), thus 'realization of that which is of the highest aspect and purpose in one's life',

Now looking into the word smaraṇa it seems to occur in the Gita.

Here are instances of it's occurrence which has verses with written commentary http://vedabase.net/s/smarana

Alot of sanskrit words when brought into punjabi and hindi lose the last a on the end but it seems wiki says abit on Jaap/jap (which does make it abit confusing to distinguish the tile's meaning between jaap sahib and japji sahib)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japa

he Sanskrit word japa is derived from the root jap-, meaning "to utter in a low voice, repeat internally, mutter" source of

  1. ^ V. S. Apte. A Practical Sanskrit Dictionary. p. 447

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajapa_japam

Japa (or japam) means repeating or remembering a mantra (or mantram), and ajapa-japa (or ajapajapam) means constant awareness of the mantra, or of what it represents.[1][2] The letter A in front of the word japa means without.

I think it was in one of GuruMaa's discourses where she said something along the lines of before one reaches the stage of simran 'which means to remember' you first have to have the actual experience or union. Only then can you remember that experience. Before that it is just japa trying to reach that stage.

Thanks for sharing the links to an English version of maha kosh. Been looking for that for ages.
