"Our dietary guidance has followed Keys’s view for 50 years now. Despite half-a-billion pounds spent trying to prove his hypothesis, the evidence of its health benefits has never been produced. Meanwhile, rates of obesity and diabetes are rising and heart disease remains a leading cause of death. It’s worth wondering if our working hypothesis about diet and health is not working. And if alternative ideas are to be considered, nutrition science must, like any science, provide an open, civil and unbiased climate for genuine debate. For reasons of substance and style, it’s time to enter a post‑Keysian era."

Meanwhile desis don't give a shit. We eat gheo, makhan, malai with everything!

I wouldn't go bragging about that given the physical state of many desis - especially when they get older...

kuddhoooooo!

Well the problem is we eat more than necessary (to try to fill that infinite void) and we eat tons of carbs as well. And to make matters worse we don't get any exercise.

But you should eat Gheo, it fills you up faster and for a longer period. Those who eat more carbs tend to binge.

By you/we I just mean me. I've been doing this and now regretting it. :(

What?

Thats's about the long, short and tall of it; excess carbs and insufficient exercise. People tend to underestimate how much physical activity they need to do as well.

I had a relative staying with me who was/is overweight. Been here for just over six months and has lost 7/8 kilos in that time. More than what he lost in the previous 4/5 years going to the gym....

We don't skip the fat but give carbs a miss (unless its a cheat day - which we prepare for by training anyway). .

I agree. I was on a low fat diet or a LONG time. A low CARB diet is much better. It's such a shame that the western medical system has been pushing advice to consume carbs like they do. We are slowly discovering that we only need minute amounts of carbs in our diet. This carb overloading is largely responsible for the global diabetes epidemic in my opinion.

By you/we I just mean me. I've been doing this and now regretting it. :(

Confused. What are you regretting?

ਕੱਦੂ - used as derogatory slang for corpulence. As in:

ਦੇਖ ਸਾਲਾ ਕੱਦੂ ਨੇ ਢਿੱਡ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਕੱਢੇਆ ! (mum could be so cruel.....)

Gheo, roti and daal (daal is lots of carbs), is the staple food for us. And yes without tadhka. I have lost 10 kg in 6 months and not skipped dal, thats my protein :) with carbs too :P

so saturated fats and high carbs no problem as long as u r exercising and the food is simple (one of my relative used to eat french fries in desi ghee :o , now thts not simple saada food. He stopped now :D). But if u r still gaining weight then I guess u r eating in "excess" and thus reduce it. simple, but does take some time to monitor and control the diet.

If you're eating chana daal, it has the lowest GI (glycemic index) of ANY carb food. So it releases its energy slowly and not in sudden glucose 'bursts' like many other carbs - which might explain the effect on you.
