Ghar wapsi in Punjab? RSS converts Christians to Sikhism, raises Akali ire

Even as 'Ghar Wapsi', the Hindu right's agenda to get back Christians and Muslims into the fold of their 'original religion, gains momentum, it seems the Hindu groups have not restricted this 'programme' to just Hinduism and have extended it to Sikhism too.

According to an Indian Express report, RSS and other affiliated groups in Punjab, claimed to have converted over 8,000 Christians back to 'Sikhism' in the "last three years, some 3,500 of them over the last one year."

"Hoshiarpur district has seen the most ‘ghar wapsis’, followed by Amritsar and Batala", adds the IE report.

The report points out that RSS has also found support from "gurdwaras and some members of the SAD-dominated Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC)." RSS leader Ram Gopa,l who heads the organisation’s Dharm Jagran unit, justified their programme and claimed that in some villages "the entire population had converted" to Christianity and that this was a threat to Sikhism.

One SGPC member Kiranjot Kaur, who has helped with these re-conversions agreed with Gopal's views and pointed out that Christianity was a serious threat to Sikhism.

It seems RSS has also made sure that lower castes, who re-convert to Hinduism, are not discriminated against and thus lured by Christianity all over again. Leaders of the outfit in the state claimed that they are training some lower castes to become priests, a privilege reserved for Brahmins.

One widow, Kinder Kaur, who reconverted told the paper, “We converted (to Christianity) because we were told that my husband would be cured of his illness. He died in 2011. Three months ago, the RSS motivated us to become Sikhs again. I have also changed the names of my children from Thomas and Rebecca to Sumeet and Kuljit.”

But this re-conversion tactic has not gone down well with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), which is an ally of the BJP, points out the report, as the party "sees Dalit Christians as a vote bank." The report points out that even Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal assured Christians that they would not allow “forcible conversions” in the city.

It should be noted that where RSS is concerned, its tendency to put Sikhism within the fold of Hinduism has meant that it is not viewed with great liking by 'orthodox Sikhs.' Of course where conversion is concerned, Punjab is not the only state where RSS and it's fringe-groups have claimed success.

Most recently reports showed that VHP had converted over 200 Christians in Gujarat in a mass ceremony. A PTI report showed that the rituals were held at Aranai village in Valsad district of BJP-ruled Gujarat and that a 'Maha Yagnya' (ritual of the sacred fire) was organised for "purification" of the tribals before taking them back in Hindu-fold. Each of them was also given a copy of Bhagwad Gita.

VHP insisted that the re-conversion was "voluntary" and not by force. "As part of the ongoing 'Ghar Vapsi' programme, VHP today re-converted 225 people from Christian community and took them back into Hindu religion," said Valsad district VHP chief Natu Patel.

In Kerala it was reported that 35 people had converted to Hinduism, forcing the state to call a probe into the incident.

The conversion reportedly took place pn Sunday morning in Alappuzha and Kollam districts. In Alappuzha, members of eight Christian families - a total of 30 people - reportedly embraced Hinduism at a temple function organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). In Kollam, there were five people who reportedly became Hindus.

The VHP, meanwhile, said all those who became Hindus on Sunday decided to convert on their own, and all the organisation did was to prepare the stage for it. Reports said another 300 people in Alappuzha have expressed their desire to embrace Hinduism, and the conversion ceremony was likely to take place on Christmas day.

While the BJP has said that it does not support "forced religious conversion", the recent spate of reports on these so-called 'ghar wapsi' ceremonies are a worrying sign where religious freedom is concerned in the country.

Ahhhhh.. After nearly a thousand years of converting Hindus and others, the two abrahamic religions are starting to get it back

And that makes it okay, does it?

For doing forced/tricked conversions, the Muslims were wrong then, and the Hindus are damn wrong now!

What the hell is wrong with these people! !!?

nothing, they are Hindu - isn't that "wrong" enough in itself? When Jat sikhs smash dalit christians (former Sikhs) in Gurdaspur villages, that is of course "shodha" which is kosher.

Yep, makes it correct. Tricked? I have seen the videos it doesnt seem to me that people are being held against their will. And not every case of conversion can be labeled as tricked or converted. There has been about 6 conversion ceremonies since that particular one and I have not heard tricked or forced.

If RSS is doing a good thing why are you people discouraging them ? The SGPC should have been the one doing this since 1947 instead they chose to turn away Ambedkar and 300 million dalits who wanted to become Sikh. Ambedkar's brother is still a sikh and he is the founder of khalsa college in mumbai if I'm not wrong. Do you realize the political implications of this ? Sikhs would have been the ruling majority in india ! Sikhs are easily in better position to convert those tribals and dalits and have more to offer than Hindus. But it seems like the SGPC does not want to get off their behinds and give a damn about the dangerous demographic and cultural changes that are happening in india right now.

Also, how is it forceful ? May be it is deceitful but then again isn't that what muslims and christians have been doing since the time of mohammed bin qasim ? Watch this documentary and see how christians convert epople with promises of fake miracles and healing :

Likewise, see Zakir naik videos and how he has been lying about Hinduism and Sikhism, taking verses out of context and even going as far to say that Mohammed was prophecised in books of Hindus and Sikhs. Another ridiculous argument is that Guru nanak dev ji was a muslim.

Do we just sit back and let them do it in the name of 'dharm'. There is no 'dharm' with these adharmis who have a clear message in their books to be deceitful for political purposes (We smile in the face of some people although our hearts curse them). And besides you are not taking into consideration that those guys are also under a lot of duress by various islamic groups that run strong in west up.

I swear some of you liberal secular types are so delusional and live in their bubble it's not even funny anymore. Take a look around and see what's happening in india. Love jihad is an epidemic, especially in south, and girls are being tricked into islam by muslim men wearing hindu kalava and sikh kada (now tell me if that's not forceful or deceitful). They are selling them as sex slaves in middle east. Illegal immigration from Bangladesh has already changed the demographics in many places of north east and even in places near punjab. Parts of Kerala with muslim majority already have sharia law. Riots are happening in uttar pradesh every day. In jammu and ladakh, kashmiris are settling enmasse and engaging in love jihad, daily riots in an attempt to change demographics so that a plebiscite will favor them. In maharashtra, the marathas and OBC are being incited and converted to islam by muslims/left against brahmins and hinduism for a political goal of allowing Owaisi's MiM (a communal muslim party) to become dominant in maharashtra. In punjab, this whole ravidassia and dalit liberation movement is also being spearheaded by the leftists. The leftists are fully aware that ravidassia and buddhism are not religions or faith systems but mere philosophies, so anyone joining them will eventually convert to islam or christianity. This has already happened in punjab with many mazhabis and valmikis. Full preparations are underway for dividing the society, creation confusion in indian society with the end goal of creating a pakistan in deccan, north east and past delhi. Do not forget that muslims have a prophecy of Ghazwat ul Hind in their hadith which says all of hind will be conquered by muslims. They are just acting to fulfil that prophecy just like they acted to fulfil other prophecies about conquest of constantinople, egypt, iran. India is unfinished agenda for them. Likewise christians backed by western NGO's have embarked on a meticulous project called joshua project to convert all of india to christianity.

Wake up before mughal raaj comes back full force to india. This time it has come under the cloak of liberalaism/progressive politics and people across the world are realizing that left is aligned with islam. It's not about RSS or SGPC. It's about protecting our identity as a people. Tommorow if India becomes 100% sikh state it won't make a difference to our identity but if it becomes 100% musulmaan it would resemble another Iran or Pakistan where people have started following a foreign culture, follow foreign customs, and use a foreign lipi to write. Do you really want that ?

I've said this before, and I will say it again, so listen up:

SIKHS DO NOT BELIEVE IN CASTE!!!! Get it? Good.

Now, you talk about "your mazhabi" brothers. The whole reason that they left Hinduism in the first place is because of this damn caste system labelling!!! And now you have this hypocritical holier than thou attitude? Have some bloody shame before pointing fingers! !

I would invite you to watch the videos again carefully, particularly the one with the Muslim woman's interview.

And if this makes it okay, then by your logic, you have just forfeited the right to EVER complain when a Hindu converts to Islam or Christianity.

By any means neccessary. That's what muslims and Christians believe. The jury is out as to whether this was a set up by the RSS to start a nationwide debate on conversion. I'm talking about the first conversion in Agra not the subsequent ones.

It's also a test of reactions and solidifying the hindu vote. The secularists got suckered in. The commies, socialists, Islamists want an inquiry when the Christian and Moslem convert but no inquiry when the hindu becomes muslim or christian.

The Hindu fence sitters are watching this double standard. West Bengal, Punjab and Kerala we are coming.

Let me correct you. The SGGS does not believe in caste but the sikhs do.

Now here i have to praise RSS but why SGPC is not doing this is also a question ? The best way to deal with Christian missinaries is by social work among poor people and also we need organisation which motivates Sikhs to marry Sikhs from different caste, Back bone of Christian missionaries is American funding and we should focus on converting Christians in America.

The secularists, commies etc..with long sanskritized names say that conversion is not a part of Hinduism. But Dharm and its protection are fluid and change from age to age. Hence, it now has to be part of Hinduism.

As for Sikhism, I think that conversion is part of that religion.

Both Hinduism and Sikhism have done a horrible job at converting others. It has to be a pillar of both religions.

As for Christian missionaries, they arrive in India under the guise of tourist visas but their aim is to convert. Expect this to change very soon as well.Gurdaspur is an absolute hotbed of Christian missionary work.

Money, new bikes, coercion, food, and everything else is offered. Converts are told to go back home and convert family members. The result is broken homes.

Sikhs do not believe in caste ???

This is what a Gora observed years back and has stated :

Despite the doctrinal standof the Sikh gurus against caste hierarchy, caste distinctions continued to exist in Punjab.

The following excerpt from William Franklin (Franklin,1803:2823)is an eloquent testimony to the existence of caste among
the Sikhs.
He states The Sikhs allow foreigners of every description to join their standard, to sit in their company...
, but excepting in the instance of the jauts (Jats), they will not consent to the inter-caste marriages nor will they eat or drink from the hands of the alien:except he be a Brahmin and for this caste they always profess the highest veneration.

Veera my closest friends are Jatts ..i dont hate them as individuals or blame them as such however when in a community the behaviour becomes caste conscious .

Master Tara singh Malhotra is blamed time and again for turning away Dr. BabaSaheb Ambedkar however that was just one of the reasons the other is stated here :

http://seekingbegumpura.wordpress.com/2012/09/24/ambedkar-and-sikhism/

Later some conflicts came up between Ambedkar and the Sikh leader Master Tara Singh, who undoubtedly feared Ambedkar’s political influence. The massive numbers of untouchables would overwhelm the existing Sikhs, if conversion took place; and Tara Singh feared that Ambedkar himself would become the leader of the Panth. In one incident, money (twenty five thousand rupees) apparently promised to Ambedkar was given instead to a follower of Tara Singh, Master Sujan Singh Sarhali; it never reached Ambedkar.

Thus, during the middle period of his life, Ambedkar interacted with the Sikhs and their leaders, and showed some attraction to Sikhism. It is worth asking why in the end he turned away from it.

One reason was undoubtedly his awareness of the existence of untouchability within Sikhism itself. Though in principle egalitarian, in fact Dalit Sikhs retained a separate identity – as Mazbhi Sikhs, or in some cases as “Ravidasis’ – and were differently treated. There was thus a kind of segregation within Sikhism. At the social level, Dalit Sikhs in the Punjab remained landless, subordinate as agricultural laborers to the landed Jat Sikhs, the dominant community.

Then, perhaps, the very factors which he early spoke of as reasons for going to Sikhism may have dissuaded him. If Sikhism was “part of Hindu culture,” then what in the end was the use? The “Hindu culture” which was so infected with casteism would continue to infect the entire Sikh community; Dalits would remain as untouchables within it, only untouchables who perhaps wore turbans. Buddhism more and more was appearing to Ambedkar as something different; like Sikhism it was Indian and not “alien”; it would not irrevocably divide the nation or give domination to Muslims or greater continuity of power to British colonialists. It also offered, perhaps, a kind of rationalism that Sikhism did not – Ambedkar was undoubtedly attracted by this theme that the Buddha had so consistently put forward, that one must decide for oneself, on the basis of experience and rationality: atta deepa bhav. Thus Buddhism proved to have a stronger and more enduring appeal than Sikhism. Buddhism could not even offer the limited resources of community support that Sikhism could, but it was also a religion that Ambedkar could shape on his own, could mould to suit what he felt to be the spiritual and moral needs of Dalits. Sikhism already had its set religious hierarchy, to which Ambedkar – however strong and determined a leader – would have been subordinate.

Thus, in the end, Sikhism lost out to Buddhism as the goal of conversion for Ambedkar and his lakhs of followers.

Why are you blaming the jatts ? Was tara singh malhotra who turned away ambedkar and 300 million dalits a jatt ? This finger pointing has never done us any good. It's not the time to find blame with others.

Do you guys really think 300 million Dalits would convert to anything even if Ambedkar says so?

Good question. The answer lies in the fact that how many converted to buddhism with Ambedkar, i don't think more than one lakh (just guessing, not researched).
