Lineages of 19th century Sikh scholars

That's cool Amardeep.

Do your research.

Sometimes I think that (their obvious writing) talent wasn't enough for some writers and they had to bolster their works with an affiliation to a past great. It wasn't really necessary in my opinion but may reflect just how important some connection to past respected figures were for the writers (and indeed the readers!)

True. But you also have to remember the times back then. Literacy, music, crafts and talents in various things wasn'nt the norm in those societies, so there was a much higher possibility that writers of the time were connected somehow or the other. Same goes for musicians etc. Not like today where these things are mainstreamed and you have thousands and millions of people who know how to read and play music without being connected to each other. Back then many sons just did what their family tradition was so you could easily have a line of 10 generations all being writers.

I read once that the muslim artisans who rebuilt and renovated the Golden Temple in the Misl and Maharaja period was the descendants of the same family who built the Taj Mahal during Jahangirs rule. Considering the fact that talent was kept in families etc, it is highly likely that it was the very same family.

Dal, this is a different approach but still interesting. As amardeep said, even if this is a forged mid-late 18th-19th century source, it atleast gives us a hint that the lineage mentioned by Bhindranwale Jathedars were not (completely) made-up in the 20th century. Even though Dr Trilochan Singh 'debunked' this lineage as having no basis back in the 1970s before the popularity of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale it seems that some historical basis is there. I still do not believe in the traditional DDT account about their formation & lineage though.

No idea,

It's extremely fascinating to read these lineage accounts from the 19th century

Do you know if Pandit Mangal Singh jee (one of the modern time great scholars) was connected to any of these lineages? Have you ever seen his name feature anywhere?
