Two hukamname from Guru Hargobind to the Benares Sangat forbid fish.

Dear All it is quite interesting that Guru ji referred to the Benares sangat. At same time Bhagat Kabir was from Benares or connection with that place. My opinion  is the reason Bhagat Kabir "banned" fish as food cause He had probably seen those fishes eating human waste/ feces. People build their toilets on the river and may had ease their bowels directly into the Ganges.By consuming these fishes one will directly consumed the human feces (as muslim forbid eating or touching swines/dogs as muslim believes that pig/dog  eat its own waste). Kabir ji may had some islamic influence on cleanliness as it is believe that his family was a muslim. Thus fishes from benares were not clean.

Just to throw this in the mix too.

I swear I saw a woodcut print of Harmandir Sahib (from the early colonial period I believe) where there were people spear-fishing from boats in the sarowar. Must try and find it again.

Amritsari fish is one of the most popular dish in South Asia.In lahore the dish is known as Sardar ki Machchli because the the sikhs migrated to Lahore from Amritsar bring that dish with them. That must be 19th or early twentieth century

So I guess for Amritsari Sikhs fish was never a taboo

It is also found that couples that had fish in their diet also likely to become more pregnant and have high fertility.

There are probably many lacto-vegetarian foods (or supplements) which could help with low fertility problems.

Why choose something, which has been explicitly banned in Gurbani?

Fish has been prohibited in Bhai Desa Singh Rehatnama too.

Please read the First line in the image below:

This goes back to what we were talking about on another thread paapiman. You can't follow all rahits, they can contradict each other. Desa Singh's compared to Prem Sumarag (with regard to fish) perfectly illustrates that.

Daas understands your point bro, but the evidence (including Gurbani verses) is pretty strong against Fish consumption.

Sri Mukat Marg Granth also looks down upon Fish eating.
