Apologies, this should have been posted before the Charitars. One needs to read this, to understand the context of the Charitars.

Brief Summary

There is an old King, who has married a young lady. The King had attacked another kingdom, assassinated the lady's father and then won her over. This young lady gets sexually attracted to the son of the old King. The son/prince refuses to have sex with her. She then later, accuses him of sexually assaulting her. The old King blindly believes in her lies and decides to execute his son, by death penalty. The Minister knows the truth and tries to change the king's mind through these Charitars.

ਭੋਗ - can refer to satisfying your mind by gossiping/talking, etc.

(Punjabi phrase - Gallan naal payt bharna - filling stomach by talking)

ਰਤ - can possibly refer to romantic talk, sweet talk, flattery, etc.

We need to keep this need before analyzing the Charitars.

Not every Charitar is talking about sexual activities.

Reading this is amazing. You can the ethos and structure in this text that we see in Srii Charitropakhyan.

A lot of Charitropakhyan was derived from Panchtatar, and Triya Charitar, two preceding works (from the 1680s-1690s)  of Guru Sahib's Darbar.

Great news for Sikhs. Katha of Sri Charitropakhian Sahib jee has been completed by Gyani Harbhajan Singh jee Dhudhikey. Gyani jee has done a great seva for the Panth, by doing katha of Sri Dasam Granth Sahib jee. We should all be thankful to him.

Have you guys heard of the Chitrokh granth? Sri Charitropakhian Sahib jee is the ulathha of this granth according to Gyani Harbhajan Singh jee Dhudikey (student of BhindranTaksal).

Let's focus on the lines below.

ਪੜਨ ਹੇਤੁ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸੌਪ੍ਯੋ ਦਿਜ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

He was sent by the Raja to the household of a Brahmin to seek education.

ਏਕ ਮਾਸ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਦਿਜਬਰ ਬੋਲ੍ਯਹੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧੯॥

But (as instructed by the Rani), (the Brahmin) did not speak to him for one month.(l9)

The queen instructed the Brahmin to not teach anything to the son, thereby keeping him illiterate. This way she made sure that he would not be able to effectively communicate his side of the story to the king, if things were to go south side (which is exactly what happened). Now, we can relate other Charitars back to this point too.

Think it is Charitrokh granth, not Chitrokh granth.

Charitar (Deceit) + Okh (house) - House of Deceitful tales

According to Katha by Gyani Harbhajan Singh jee Dhudhikey, there is another reason that the lady wanted to keep her step son as illiterate. She desired that her own son should become the next king. If the step son remains uneducated and she gives birth to a son (who she will make sure receives proper education), the chances will be very high that her own son will become the next king.

It is also possible that Chitarmati has a grudge against Chitar Singh for killing/assassinating her father and destroying his Kingdom. We have to remember that Chitarmati was left with no option, but to marry Chitar Singh, therefore in a sense, it was a forced marriage. If this is considered true, then it is very much possible that she could be plotting to destroy Chitar Singh's kingdom.

Another point is that even though, Chitarmati is the chief villain in the base tale, Chitar Singh is also a negative character. He fought an unjust war over a woman, where thousands of men lost their lives.

Do you guys think that it is also possible that the wise minister is trying to make Chitar Singh realize his big folly in waging a war over a woman, who happened to look like his wife (who was a fairy btw)?

There might be a two fold purpose in telling these tales

  • Firstly, to save the dynasty, by saving the Prince from capital punishment (and exposing Chitarmati along with it)
  • Secondly, making Chitar Singh realize his mistake and make him a better ruler

Let's see if we can make this connection with the Charitars, we have discussed so far.

Age of the King

We can safely infer (from the verses below) that Chitar Singh is either middle aged or old.

ਬਹੁਤ ਬਰਸਿ ਸੰਗ ਅਪਸਰਾ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਮਾਨੇ ਭੋਗ ॥

The Raja had the pleasure of making love to the Fairy for many years,

Later, it states

I am never satiated by Raja and, therefore, he cannot harm you in any way.

Another purpose for narrating these Charitars could be to break the attachment the Raja has with Chitarmati. He is just blinded by lust and needs a wake-up call. He is under the illusion that Chitarmati is happy with him and loves him.

The translation should read as "The Raja had many years of happiness with the Apsara."

Bindra could only see one translation for Bhog and that was sex.

Please listen to Vidhya Martand Srimaan 108 Sant Gyani Gurbachan Singh jee Khalsa Bhindranwale talking about a Charitar. A pious princess plays a Charitar to convert a lust infected Bhangi (person belonging to the sweeper caste) into a Saint. This will illustrate how women can bring about positive changes in society and how they should do it.

Please start listening at 30:25 min:
