Sri Charitropakhyan Sahib jee Series - Charitar #56

The King was very smart in this Charitar. Even though, he had figured out that his wife was unfaithful, he still kept loving her, even more so than before. He did not react instantly in anger and did not give any clues to her to suggest that something is wrong. He also did not reveal this to anyone and kept her secret in his mind.

ਚਿਤ ਰਾਖਿਯੋ ਨਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਬਖਾਨ੍ਯੋ ॥

This Charitar teaches us to remain cool headed in these types of situations. Any human would naturally be enraged after having been betrayed by his spouse, but you have to remain in control of your emotions, especially if you want to discover the complete story. You have to absorb the shock like a man (or better like a Singh). You have to keep behaving the same way as you were with that person, so as to keep the trust of the deceptive person intact.

Other key points which stand out in this tale:

  • Deception by the king to convince the lady that he was sleeping
  • Use of disguise in surveillance (when the king was following the queen)
  • Brutal punishment handed out by the king (not in compliance with Sikhism)
  • Fabrication of a fake tale to cover up the crime (might not work in today's age with advanced forensics)

The king had discovered that his wife was cheating on him.

Now, there are two possibilities on why he followed her:

Maybe he wanted to actually see for himself, the act of cheating before punishing her

or

It is possible that he wanted to send his wife and her lover, both of them together to hell.

According to Nara saab, the king did not discover the secret in stanza# 3, but wanted to uncover it after he woke up and did not find his wife on his bed.

This is the line:

ਸੋਵਤ ਜਗ੍ਯੋ ਭੇਦ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਜਾਨ੍ਯੋ ॥

In a previous Charitar, we had a similiar scenario where the King find his wife with another man, but in that charitar the King decided to let them live as it would bring shame/ridicule on him if the populace were to find out his Queen had been found with another man. IN this charitar however it shows how the King managed to enact an alternate ending whereby rather than ridiculing him the populace actually praised him.

Yes, I agree with that. After finding her missing, he showers affection on her so as not to give his plan away of finding out what she is up to .

The above illustrates how public image is very important to many kings. They don't want the public to find out that the queens have cheated on them.

Maybe one of the reasons for that is to avoid people questioning the ability of the king.

If a queen is found guilty of cheating in a kingdom, subjects might wonder about the effectiveness of the king. He could not keep his wife (queen) in control, will he be able to manage an entire kingdom?
