There might be multiple interpretations of the following verse.

ਰਾਜਾ ਜ੍ਯੋ ਰਾਜਹਿ ਕਿਯੋ ਭਈ ਮਰਦ ਕੇ ਭੇਸ ॥੨॥

Masquerading as a male she ruled over effectively.(2)

Another interpretation (Similar to Nara saab)

She ruled like a king, as if she was a male.

Maybe she was masquerading as a male, to avoid any invasions by the neighboring kings. The chances are higher that a kingdom will be invaded, when there is no king on the throne. For example, a queen or a minister or a prince handling the affairs of a kingdom might present a good opportunity for a takeover.

It seems that the wise minister is telling Chitar Singh that take a look at yourself and compare it with what a woman has accomplished in this tale.

  • She masqueraded as a king to protect her kingdom
  • She fought wars and won over enemies
  • She got herself impregnated
  • She maintained her reputation (by keeping her romance secret)
  • She ensured that her son was given his due place in society (instead of just abandoning him, which she could have)
  • She made sure that the kingdom had an heir (and that too her own son)

In this charitar the man is only mentioned upto the part of impregnation and absent thereon. The main character in this charitar in the woman, who is proven to be astute, confident and focused. When the King dies, she very confidently manages the Kingdom and when she becomes pregnant she very confidently manouveres that situation to her advantage.

To me, this resembles the confidence of the Queen in the root story, where she has manouvered the King into giving his own son the death sentence. Because of the way she she did, the King not realise that a charade was taking place.

So, in this tale, Indar Mati becomes pregnant, even though her intention was to enjoy sexual pleasures, but she manoeuvres the situation to her advantage.

In the base tale, Chitar Mati gets rejected (sexually) by Hanuwant Singh, even though she would have thought that she had an excellent chance (owing to her physical beauty) to get laid with him, but she manoeuvres the situation to her advantage (via the false allegation)
