Bhai Desa Singh RehitNama

There are Bbecki Akali Nihangs who only cook with wooden fire and eat in Sarbloh. Far as they are concerned all meat other than goat buck Jhatka ,is khulla mass. To support their case they cite Rehtnama Bhai Desa Singh:

“Fish and meat he never eats.....If he is to eat let him Jhatka a goat buck and eat. At at any other meat let him never even look.”
( Rehtnameh, ed. Piara Singh Padam, Published by Bhai Chutter Singh & Jiwan Singh, Amritsar, 1989), 147-148)

To this day in Nihang non-vegetarian langur only Jhatka Bakra can be served as this alone is considered Mahaparsad. All other meat is forbidden in the langur.

So how can a Singh justify eating other meat than non Jhatka bakra meat in light of above cited Rehtnama? As all other meat is not Jhatka and is in reality but khulla mass.

Can you really use rehats definitely like that? We could produce Prem Sumarag's section about meat to get another opinion. And what about different rehats that contradict each other?

IMHO, it depends on the quality and the quantity of evidence.

Like for example, with regards to Fish meat, we have so far:

  • Clear injunction in Gurbani against its consumption
  • Two Hukamname against its consumption
  • This Rehatnama
  • Mahapurakh's bachan (The Saint being, one of the greatest theologians of the Panth, not just an ascetic/recluse Saint)

On the other hand, so far, we only have the solitary Prem Sumarag granth in favour of fish consumption.

The evidence is tilting heavily towards its prohibition. Therefore, to be on the safe side, from an objective point of view, Sikhs must refrain from eating fish meat.

What about all the evidence of Singhs hunting wild boar then?

Is there a Rehatnama/Hukamnama/historical document (other than Prem Sumarag Granth) which allows the consumption of boar meat?

One Rehatnama prohibits the meat of a domestic pig.

Thanks

It's just a random one I found on a hard drive. Thought I'd share it. Don't know of any background though. Guessing I'd say it was from around M. Ranjit Singh's period.

There are quite a few references in early european sources about Singh's hunting and consuming wild boar.

No, there isn’t! It’s a myth constructed by the British and their European counterparts to sell meat and force those ruled to slaughter animals for their consumption. They have changed many aspects of Sikh, hindu and Jain information deliberately to suit their political  agendas, nonstop. Hunting had to be practised by Khalsa Singhs and Singhnies to sharpen their warfare skills in the battles and not for their consumption.
