Even though, the king (Maingal Singh) became the maid's lover, there is no mention of sexual activities in this Charitar. Could that possibly point to something?

The maid was definitely a talented and a highly educated woman. She definitely deserves a better position than a maid.

Let's look at the verse (stanza#4) below more carefully.

ਸੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਅਟਕਤ ਭਯੋ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ॥

Now, ਰੂਪ can mean ਸੁਭਾਉ (according to Mahan Kosh). ਅਟਕਤ can mean attracted.

So, the meaning of the above verse can be:

The King got attracted (towards the maid) by looking at her character.

Therefore, it is very much possible that the king (Maingal Singh) was attracted to the personality (level of knowledge and talents) of the maid, not just to her physical beauty. Notice that there is a lack of description of her physical characteristics. 

IMHO, this Charitar is teaching rulers to reward highly talented and educated people (like the maid in this tale). If you cannot reward them publicly, you should still find a way to keep them happy. Such people can be an asset to any kingdom/organization. The king knew that his wife might not like him personally rewarding the maid, so he found a way around it to keep, both his wife and the maid happy.

Connection to the base tale:

Maybe the wise minster is trying to tell Chitar Singh that look at this king. He is taking a risk and rewarding his talented maid, and on the other hand, you are trying to get your own son (the heir to the throne) killed based on insufficient evidence. Look at this wise king and look at yourself.

The ring in this tale could indicate evidence.

Maybe the wise minister is trying to tell Chitar Singh that Maingal Singh planted a evidence to reward a maid, while you are not even interested in searching for evidence to prove your son's innocence. You are (or were) hell bent on punishing your son by death, after listening to the testimony of your wife.

Maingal Singh had a gorgeous wife (Dant Prabha), who was even admired by Indar devta and the demi-Gods, but still he got attracted towards the maid, due to her immense education and talents.

Maybe this Charitar is teaching young beautiful women that, in addition to physical beauty, you need to have mental prowess too. Don't live in an illusion that men are only attracted towards outer physical beauty.

ਮੈਂਗਲ means an intoxicated elephant. Elephant could point to bigheartedness. As seen in the Chairtar, the king does have a big heart.

Another possible interpretation (assuming the king falls sexually for the maid) :

There is a shabad (Ad Gurbani) in Raag Gauri which alludes to the suffering of an elephant due to his lust. Now, it is possible that the King's name can mean "an elephant intoxicated with lust".

In this tale, the king is intoxicated by lust to an extent that he is willing to deceive his own wife and reward her maid. The wise minster might be trying to convey to Chitar Singh that you too are similar to this king. You are like an intoxicated elephant affected by lust for Chitar Mati. You are/were about to kill your own son and in a sense reward Chitar Mati for her deception.

From an another perspective, this type of an act can also backfire badly. What if in the future, Dant Prabha finds out that her husband had given an expensive gift to a maid. Imagine, a wife finding out that her husband is giving expensive gifts to another woman behind her back. What will she think?

Isn't it strange that a person/woman who is proficient in the knowledge of the 4 Vedas, the Shastras, sangeet vidhia etc should be working a maid?

How would she have obtained this study/knowledge being a maid? She would be a low caste and they were denied knowledge and learning. Lowcastes were not allowed to learn the Sanskrit texts.

 

And then having knowledge of the holy Sanskrit texts she still plays along with the Kings charade in order to get an expensive ring.

 

Why did it need mentioning that she had extensive education/knowledge? She didn't do anything in the story except say what the King asked her to say.

There lived a Raja named Maingal Singh, who was from the clan of Raghu Wans.

ਤਾ ਕੇ ਭਵਨ ਏਕ ਬਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

ਜਨੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਅਪਨ ਕਰਨ ਗੜਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

He had a woman in his house, who was, seemingly, carved by the God himself.(1)

ਸੋਰਠਾ ॥

Sortha

ਦੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਤਿਹ ਨਾਮ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਜਗ ਜਾਨਤ ਸਭੈ ॥

She was known in the world as Dant Prabha and her beauty was

ਸੁਰ ਸੁਰਪਤਿ ਅਭਿਰਾਮ ਥਕਿਤ ਰਹਤ ਤਿਹ ਦੇਖਿ ਦੁਤਿ ॥੨॥

admired by Indara and all the gods.(2)

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

Dohira

ਇਕ ਚੇਰੀ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਭਵਨ ਜਾ ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਰਸ ਰੀਤਿ ॥

A perfect maid used to live in her residence,

ਬੇਦ ਬ੍ਯਾਕਰਨ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਖਟ ਪੜੀ ਕੋਕ ਸੰਗੀਤਿ ॥੩॥

Who was proficient in Vedas, Grammar, Six Shastras, Philosophy and Koka-shastra.(3)

ਸੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਅਟਕਤ ਭਯੋ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ॥

On perceiving her splendour, Raja fell for her,

ਦੈ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਕਛੂ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੀ ਸੰਕ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥੪॥

But, being scared of his women, he could not give her any gift.( 4)

ਚੌਪਈ ॥

Chaupaee

ਏਕ ਅੰਗੂਠੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਰ ਲਈ ॥

ਲੈ ਤਵਨੈ ਚੇਰੀ ਕੌ ਦਈ ॥

Raja brought a ring and gave it to that maid.

ਤਾਹਿ ਕਥਾ ਇਹ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਸਿਖਾਈ ॥

ਕਹਿਯਹੁ ਪਰੀ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਿਕਾ ਪਾਈ ॥੫॥

He told her to’ say that she had found it being mislaid.(5)

ਏਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸਭਾ ਬਨਾਈ ॥

One day Raja had an assembly and called all his women.

ਸਭ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਬੋਲਿ ਪਠਾਈ ॥

He told that he had last a ring.

ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਮਮ ਗਈ ॥

ਵਹੁ ਕਹਿ ਉਠੀ ਚੀਨਿ ਮੈ ਲਈ ॥੬॥

The maid gat up and said that she had it with her.(6)

ਯਹ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਿਕਾ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਈ ॥

ਡਾਰੀ ਹੁਤੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਮ ਆਈ ॥

‘Where did you find this ring?’ ‘It was lying an the way,

ਸੋ ਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਉਠਾਇ ਕਰ ਲਈ ॥

ਲੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਜੀ ਤੁਮ ਕੌ ਦਈ ॥੭॥

‘And I picked it up. Now Raja, please you take it.’(7)

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

Dohira

ਜਾ ਕੋ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਦਈ ਮੈ ਤਾਹੂ ਕੋ ਦੀਨ ॥

‘To whom God has given, I let her have too.’

ਭੇਦ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਲਹਿਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਛਲ ਗਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥੮॥

The wife could not discern the deceptian which Raja had played.(8)(1)
