Cosmetics and Jewelry

There is NO ABSOLUTE concept of beauty, it lies in the eye of the beholder. Beauty values differ in every single culture

Society and fashion defines the image of beauty and encourage ppl to want to look like that too

wen a child is born, 1st ppl say how good he looks, his physical appearance. then as he grows up, he is made more aware of how he looks, by those around him. society puts alot of emphasis on the way we look, mans physical image. it puts value on things like eye colour, the some one looks (facial complexon), lips, cheekbones.

Society presents ppl with ideals of beauty which they try and emulate. Therefore, ppl colour, highlight and accentuate their features with cosmetics, and further decorate their bodies with jewelry.

People have been wearing jewlry from the earlies times. but really there is no value in wearing jewelry. The main reason ppl wear it is to stand out and gain appreciation from others. Even singhs, like they somehow feel inadequate if they havnt got a huge kirpan or a massive dumala.

If there was some real satisfaction gained from wearing the jewels , then why do ppl not wear them while sleeping?ppl do not look at why they are doin things, reflection on their actions, and go thru alot of pain jus to feel accepted by others. Time , effort and money is spent for jus being appreciated and to hear a few words of praise.

The two main motivating factors are ego boosting and lust.

Acting like they are tryin to care for their bodies, ppl apply lotions, perfurmes, and cosmetics. They wanna look young and beautiful, so they apply creams to prevent wrinkles, and use foundation to hide marks in their faces (blemishes)

The next logical step is mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow, to bring out the colour of their eyes, and blush for their cheekbones.

next is lip liner, lipstick, lips, so attention is drawn to their lips

Then after all that, to remove the makeup, they use more products.

I have noticed that ppl will do nearly anything to be noticed by others, bt wot they dnt kno is that lipstick covers the natural moisture of lips, nail polish prevents nails from breathing. Many wear earrings eventho it means piercing skin and making holes in it. Then to make matters worse, they inflict more pain to themselves by plucking eyebrows, and pulling or colouring their facial hair.

They hav fallen to society and think , "yeah everyones doin it, so it must be right".

Looks like these days that ppl lives his life for other ppl. Everything he does depends on what other ppl will think of him. The main factors for wearing makeup and jewelry is to be accepted by others, lust, and ego boosting, and this is the society we live in, where it is being encouraged from young age.

Sorry if i offended anyone,

not always veera.

sometimes people do things because they want to..nothing more, nothing less.

thats like saying ur into sikhi because of ego. some things arent so simple, and as sikhs we shouldnt be so judgmental without knowing why people do things i.e intention.

Its like saying we're not allowed to wear expensive clothes. Look at the clothes that Guru Gobind Singh Ji wore, he looks soo handsome, do you think he was attached to his wealth, no, he was attached to the feet of Waheguru. Your mind shouldnt be attached to these things. Money is also an attachment which never gets mentioned here.

And Guru Granth Sahib Ji doesnt say anything about wearing makeup as being bad. Ive seen sooo many Singhni's with makeup.

when did u get darsharn of gurusahib? b/c paintings are just an artists view of what guruji looked like. it doesnt mean guruji accaulty looked like that.

at the end of dasam granth sahib, where some rehat is given, it says not to wear makeup i believe.

All i gotta say is be yourself, if something you are doing hinders you spiritually then don't do it. If by putting on make you become more attached to the physical self then obviously you are heading in the wrong direction. If by following the Rehat makes more egoistic that you are above other and you look down upon other, then that too is wrong.

The answer is within you....search, seek and it shall be heard.

Makeup exists in all cultures and is used for many purposes. The problem isn't makeup as such but the intentions behind it. A wife who puts on makeup to seduce her husband does not commit anything wrong. It's actually more about the context rather than the actually makeup itself that is the problem.

loooooooooool at handsome. we dnt even kno properly wot he looked like. For sure he had presence, like he cud turn heads wen entering a room, bt that isnt down to wot he looked like, that was down to who he was as a person, the things he represented.

At the end of the day, remember who ur sposed to be impressing, and god isnt impressed by ppl dressing up etc, all that matters is the inside

Yeah true, but what i was trying to say was people always saying that if you wear gold or expensive clothes or any makeup it is bad. But its not bad if you dont get attached to them.

Remember we came to this world empty handed and where ganna leave empty handed. The only thing we take with us are Good and Bad deeds.

yeah well if ppl are attatched to it, then they dnt need it. Realising that something is not needed means that they dnt wear it.

if someone gets attatched to their dastar, should they remove it?

The wearing of make-up and jewellery is an admittance of a persons vanity. Whether you are attached to wearing jewellery or make up is irrelevant, its just a confidence boost for insecure people.

Looking after yourself and keeping healthy and fit and eating the right foods needs to be encouraged more in these degenerate days, instead of draping yourself in jewellery and slapping on kg's of make-up.

Are you accusing Maharaj of being vain? Guru HariRai is renowned for wearing long jamas and delicate necklaces and so did Guru Gobind Singh. It is not the necklace or the khol that makes one vain: it's your attachment to it that is a problem!

all i can say is, check all ur opinions with the GGSJi, even historical, coz remember GGSJi is never wrong, and history is generally written in ppls opinons, meanin it can be biased, distorted.

Table ji, even sggs ji interpertation is generally written in people's opnion as well. And can be biased and distorted.

Because there is no such thing as one interperatation of siri guroo granth sahib ji. That is something that even upon us trying hard can get people to use one interperatation of gurbani.

That comment was with reference to todays society (normal people), Guru Maharaj Ji cannot be compared to normal people.

Inder Singh,

I agree that guroo maharaj cant be compared. But shouldnt we be following the foot steps of guroo maharaj in order to merge with him???

Khalsa was given both guns- Raj and Yog/Jog as well:

Khalsa mera ji Raaj Mein Raja , Yog mein Yogi :D :D :D

Look it up in Sukhmani Sahib!!!
