"The reason I said it was to cause mild annoyance because I don't like you personally."

Funny way of showing it, as you certainly seemed to enjoy PMing me until you decided to take up the vacancy of Javanmards guard dog, which I thought unneccesary.

Little child, grow up. This forum is for discussion and education, not for taking out your personal frustrations on people who don't see eye to eye with you.

About Japanese music...it doesn't really work that way. Some of the chanting fixes on one pitch and shifts a couple of semitones over the course of a few minutes. The same way gagaku is based around a basic tonal structure but has those really incredible moments of each instrument sliding upwards over each other, with the constant pitches of the percussion. Its a very very different musical aesthetic too in terms of time, space and tone...totally intertwined with the aesthetic of other artistic forms. Very much a less is more, static time, and a raw beauty. I think its possible to date it back to Daoist influences way before...drawing a lot upon the raw reality of nature (rather than the european rousseau-style reactionary man returning to nature thing). I know Tagore thought japanese music was 'culturally inferior' to Indian...which in my opinion is to have completely missed the point. It works on a totally different level...demonstrating total command and perfection is not what its about.

Whilst many traditional Japanese instruments have a clear link to Indian ancestory, raaga's "historic" link is not so clear.

From the little I know, traditional Japanese music does not really utilise raga - or melodic modes - the nearest equivelant is - In-senpo, I would be interested to learn the actual ascending and descending notes of traditional known Japanese forms so that a direct comparison can be made to teh above mentioned raags.

Begum Ji, it's good to understand points before you paste them:

From what I can hear, the soundtrack you provided sounds nothing like Bhairav, maybe you have a better ear for sur than me (mine being extremely amateur), would you be able to tell me what sur are being used in the piece, and their order of importance i.e. Vadi, samvadi etc, we could then establish if the piece has any resemblance to Bhairav.

For the record - the comment concerning Gunkali wasn't to suggest that Japanese music is based on this Raag let alone necessarily derived from a Raag based system, simply that in my experience (as limited as that maybe) and several other Indian Classical Musicans I am acquainted with have felt that common renderings of Japanese music that have heard sound like Gunkali.

I am at a learning stage here. Will appreciate any help from you.

So what is the raag for the Sakura song?

Shaheediyan, I can learn Lesson One from you today. I just played the sakura song on harmonium after reading your comment. and you're right about it not belonging to that Bhairav. You call yourself amateur, but you were able to comment instantaneously after listening to it.

So here I am your student (humble student) willing to take instructions on theory of raags.

For the full japanese aesthetic it doesn't come much purer than in the various schools of shakuhachi. Gagaku, the ancient court music also contains a lot of that feel, but even the older recordings of something as innocous as japanese zen/mahayana chant contains that same timelessness, space and clarity.
