  1. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh I have started a Sikhi Poetry page on Facebook. It was not planned by myself (but it would seem VaheGuru did) and it was started on the spur of the moment. I have posted a few poems on there and have had phenomenal response. If anybody would like to read, share or send any poems to me to post please have a look at the page. www.facebook.com/SikhiPoetry
  2. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh As I understand it Guru Granth Sahib Ji is Jagat Guru - Guru for all, not just the Khalsa/Sikhs to learn from. There are not any rules as such in the Guru Granth Sahib for you to have long hair. But when Guru Gobind Singh Ji created the Khalsa, He gave his followers instructions on what they must do if they are to be part of His Khalsa. This does not mean you cannot attain enlightenment if you are not of the Khalsa or Sikhi as there are many examples of non Khalsa individuals who attained enlightenment ie Baba Kabir Ji and Baba Farid Ji. God is the Truth. Neither Truth nor God are exclusive to Sikhi. Sikhi has some similar beliefs to aspects of other faiths and differs on other aspects. To my understanding we believe other faiths have certain aspects of the Truth but have gone wrong on certain things ie we believe in reincarnation where Christianity does not, we believe in praying to the One Supreme Lord but Hindus pray to multiple deities (just a couple of basic differences without going too deep into them). So Sikhi believes other faiths have certain aspects of the Truth but the Gurus put the complete Truth in Guru Granth Sahib Ji. That is why we can lead our lives by Guru Granth Sahib Ji. If however we are to be part of the Khalsa then we have to be baptised and follow the rules Guru Gobind Singh Ji set for His Khalsa Sikhs. The Khalsa are like God's police force or God's army, standing up against oppression and for the rights of those who need their help. I hope this is helpful. I hope I have not caused any offence or said anything in appropriate as this was not my intention. My understanding and knowledge is limited but have contributed in accordance with my own current understanding. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh
  3. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh Thank you for the correction and I apologise for my mistake. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh
  4. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh Thanks for your message Harsharan. As for your Raman I hope Guru Ji helps you, just don't let go of Him. God Bless You All. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh
  5. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh Brother, Guru Ji has nothing against us enjoying such things with our partners. To my knowledge it was the Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji who advised His son Guru Gobind Singh Ji (approx age 11) before His own martyrdom that 'while you have breath in you, increase your love with your wife everyday but do not even in your dreams go to another woman's bed'. That is not an exact quote obviously but Guru Ji wants us to have love with our partners and obviously this also includes a physical relationship. Guru Ji has told us we should have a normal family life whilst living a good spiritual life. Obviously part of a normal family life is husband and wife being together physically. Things like abstinence are not required as per Sikhi, to my knowledge these have been rejected. Do not worry bro. The main things you got to look at is are you ready to give your head to Guru Ji. Are you willing to live and die for Guru Ji if necessary. AmritDhari Sikhs consider themselves already dead as they have given their head to Guru Ji and therefore they belong completely to Guru Ji. I hope this helps. If you have any further questions you can ask. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh
  6. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh Veer Ji, perhaps it is just kaam or perhaps it is also an addiction for you. For me what has worked is diverting my attention onto Guru Ji. Trying to pray everyday at least Japji Sahib, its not always on time however and often Kirtan Sohila at night. Also I try to go to the Gurdwara in the mornings. Guru Ji has put my mind towards Him. I ask Guru Ji to give me His strength everyday and protect me/save me from my 5 theives. Guru Ji in this way has helped me a lot and also with the Basics of Sikhi videos on youtube.com I hope this helps. Sorry if I said anything that I should not have. 8. Hi Also to add one more point to it. What does Sikh mean? It means 'learn' or 'learner' ie student or disciple. So who are you a student of if you are Sikh? You would be a student of your Guru Ji. What does Guru mean? Its normally translated as 'teacher' but the actual meaning if you break it down is: Gu = Dark, Ru = Light, Hence from Darkness to Light = The Enlightened One or The En-lightener. So if you have accepted your Guru as the enlightened one and are a true student of their knowing their instructions to be the truth then you follow them. This would be part of the fundamental philosophy of a Sikh not cutting their hair, especially an Amrit-Dhari/baptised Sikh. I hope these have been of help. Once again my own knowledge is limited and I may have made many mistakes in what I said so please accept my apologies if I said anything incorrect or caused any offence without meaning to do so. 9. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh I do completely agree with Harsharan. My intention was not to offer some sort of ritual. From what I have learnt we should ask the Guru's advice in life ie get a Hukamnama and even take out our Haume (ego) from our lives and everything we do, therefore understand only He has any power to do anything and we have no power. My intention was just to promote this understanding and hopefully once Raman made his request to WaheGuru Ji with this in mind it would help. My sincere apologies if I caused offence or if what I said came across other than it should have done. My own knowledge is very limited but just wanted to share the little that I have and thought it may help. He is our mother and father, if we cannot ask of Him who can we ask from? Nothing is greater than Naam being said from the heart, for Naam is also Prayer. All truth is in His Name. Thanks. God Bless. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh
  10. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh Raman Brother, Believe it or not we all suffer struggles but some more than others. I understand and appreciate you have suffered immensely and are still not past your struggles. All I can say to you is what I said before, that being when doing your prayers do an Ardaas to WaheGuru Ji: "I have no power at all, only you have the power, only you can do this and I cannot do anything. WaheGuru Ji please help, its a matter of getting Roti to feed myself and my family and to survive. I am your child and need your help. If you did not write a good job in my kismat previously, you are the Master who can change or rewrite my kismat. Please have Daya on me." I would also suggest asking Him to bring you closer to Him spiritually and saying it from the heart. But whatever you say just say it honestly and with pure heart. I cannot claim to have gone through what you are going through but we have had some big problems in our lives, many of which I experienced when I was still a child, including alcohol addiction & violence in the family as well as being targeted with black magic and some financial troubles. But WaheGuru Ji is great and He can see us through anything. I don't know what the greater plan is but I do trust that His understanding and plan are far greater than our comprehension. We can only humble request. If you feel weak and have any such thoughts that's when you need to cry out to Him even more and say to Him, 'I am weak, I cannot cope, I need your support, your help. Please help me!' Just don't give up and don't lose hope. Personally I find when I feel weak and that I want his support the Benti Chaupai Sahib paath is really helpful and really connects with me. My favourite version that I play and will pray/sing along to while expressing what I need to WaheGuru Ji is It says exactly what I am feeling in those times of weakness ie *Protect me with your own hands *Know me to be your own and sustain me *Destroy my enemies *Protect me *I salute only you. Brother I don't know if my words will be of help to you. This is the first time I have been on this forum and came across your question. Maybe while searching for my own enlightenment WaheGuru Ji wanted me to get in touch with you and offer you the little knowledge I have (assuming it is correct ofcourse ). After all there are no coincidences, He knows what He is doing. If you have any questions and I can help I will try. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh
  11. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh Hi Raman, I hope you have already found a job by now. If you have not I hope this is of help to you. I was recently listening to katha of Chaupai Sahib on the youtube.com channel Basics of Sikhi. This is a great channel that Guru Ji introduced me to this year and thus has guided me on the path to Sikhi. In the katha Jagraj Singh discussed the theme of WaheGuru Ji having all the power and being the only one who can do anything (I can't recall the exact terminology but you can watch it yourself if you wish ( thats video number 3 in the katha but I think he discussed it in video 2 or maybe 1). What he said is you have to get rid of all your ego and believe only WaheGuru can do this for you. You have to do an Ardaas/Benti and say to God something along the lines of: "I have no power at all, only you have the power, only you can do this and I cannot do anything." Say whatever you feel ie make your request to Him accepting that you yourself have no power and thereby getting rid of your ego. Then you have to do the manual work yourself but knowing even though you may be physically doing the work its not you its WaheGuru that is doing everything. At the end you have to thank Him. If you get what you desired thank Him for it and if you don't get what you want then you have to say "It's your HUKAM/command that this was not meant to be" and you have to accept it. Obliviously my knowledge is limited and I am only telling you what I have learnt and cannot explain it as well as the person doing the katha but if you can I would suggest you watch at least a couple of the katha videos to find out exactly what he said about this. I hope what I have said makes some sense to you and helps you. If I can be of further help please let me know. If I have said anything wrong or caused any offence as my knowledge is minimal please accept my humble apologies. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh For anyone in the west who is curious about Sikhi I would strongly suggest you have a look at https://www.youtube.com/user/basicsofsikhi it has helped me a lot and opened my eyes immensely. I thought I knew somewhat about Sikhi until I watched the videos and realised I didn't know anything.
  12. Hi I cannot claim to be a scholar but can give you the benefit of my own understanding or limited knowledge. At the very basic level it is the command of Guru Gobind Singh Ji that his baptised Sikhs follow his instructions in how they live their lives. For baptised Sikhs who are part of the Khalsa any cutting of the hair is strictly prohibited as they have been gifted an identity from Guru Ji. With this identity everyone will always be able to recognise them as a Sikh and they will never be able to deny who they are and who their Guru is. It is the duty of the Khalsa to help others when it is needed. For example if someone was in danger and saw a Khalsa Sikh (recognisable by their appearance ie wearing a turban, bangle and sword or dagger) they can approach him or her and say 'I need your help and it is your duty as Guru's Sikh to help me'. There were many occasions in the past where true Sikhs who lived by Guru Ji's teachings would help others risking their own lives regardless of the religion/caste/sex of the others. Also the other reason as I understand it is that before the Sikhs were given this distinct identity and when the 9th Guru Ji was martyred, only a handful of Sikhs were brave enough to admit they were Sikh at that place and time which lead to them also being martyred. There were approximately 500 Sikhs there at the time who got scared and did not admit to being Sikh. As Sikhs are meant to be fearless even in the face of death, having an undeniable identity ensures that they cannot shy away from being a Sikh of the Guru in the future. If we look in to it there are benefits to keeping your hair ie scientifically it stores nutrients etc that are beneficial to us. My own thinking (not backed up by any studies or research) is if you look at any religious individuals they are always depicted as having long hair or beards ie Jesus, Prophet Mohammed, Hindu religious individuals and the Sikh Gurus obviously. So perhaps there are benefits to keeping our hair that the Gurus did not necessarily tell us about or we have not fully understood as yet. But once again at the very base of everything is that Sikhs believe the Gurus to be perfect and at one with Almighty God. So their instruction/command is perfect. If you really believe this as a Sikh and know your Guru to be perfect you don't really need to know the reason behind his instruction but would wish to follow what He said no matter what. That is why a true Khalsa Sikh would rather lose his life than lose his faith or identity. As I said before I am just a normal person and my knowledge is minimal at best. If what I have said is wrong or have caused offence then please forgive me. I hope this is of help. Please let me know your thoughts or if you have any further questions. VaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa VaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh
