    Shaheed Udham Singh

    Written by Hardial Singh Bains

    Who was Udham Singh?

A patriot from the Punjab, Udham Singh came to London in the 1930s as a fighter against foreign colonial rule in India. British rule was one of the darkest eras in the history of our people. Many crimes and atrocities were committed, but one that stood out in particular was the massacre of innocent, unarmed civilians at Jallianwalla Bagh in Amritsar in 1919. The British ruling circles, then as now the self proclaimed upholders of civilisation, refused to punish those guilty of this heinous crime, and in fact heaped public honours upon them. Accounted for by nobody, Jallianwalla Bagh remained a blot upon the dignity of the oppressed people of India.

It was Udham Singh who made a pact with death and undertook to execute Michael O'Dwyer, former Governor of Punjab and one of the main perpetrators of the massacre at Jallianwalla Bagh. On 13 March 1940, he shot O'Dwyer at a public meeting in London. On 31 July, he was hanged in Pentonville prison. He made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the dignity and honour of the Indian people, irrespective of their regional or religious backgrounds, and for this he is remembered as a Shaheed or martyr, immortal in the memory of all freedom-loving peoples of South Asia.

Why we are celebrating the memory of Shaheed Udham Singh?

Shaheed Udham Singh represented the best traditions of the people of the South Asian sub-continent: courage and the spirit of self sacrifice in the fight against oppression, and unity in struggle irrespective of religious, communal or ethnic background. Today, when all over the sub-continent the political situation is in ferment, the age-old conflict between the exploiters and the exploited and between enlightenment and backwardness is once again reaching its climax.

The struggle is also being waged for our true traditions. The rulers of Delhi and Islamabad are following in the footsteps of the British colonialists like O'Dwyer. Half a century after Shaheed Udham Singh's martyrdom, our "lords" and "masters" are continuing in Kashmir, Punjab and countless other places what O'Dwyer began in Jallianwalla Bagh. Just like O'Dwyer, they label anybody opposing their repression as a terrorist, while they themselves carry out mass terror against the people. Behind every act of defiance by the people, the rulers of India and Pakistan see a foreign hand. Yet it is they themselves who gladly sell the sovereignty of the people for a few coins thrown to them by foreign banks and multinational companies. On top of all this, the rulers of our countries are expanding their armies and making noises about starting a war in the region.

Those who have inherited the mantle of British colonialism and O'Dwyer do their utmost to make the people forget about the real message of their heroes, be it the Bhaktas or the Sufis, or early patriots like Tipu Sultan, or the fighters of the First War of Indian Independence (1857), or the Ghadarites, or, indeed, martyrs like Bhagat Singh and Udham Singh. The people, on the other hand, must uphold the names and work of these patriots.

In Britain the state is pressurising immigrants to abandon their traditions and to "assimilate". Although these suggestions may sound harmless to some, their real implications are revealed when well-known apologists for racism use these views to whip up chauvinism against our communities. This was done when Mr. Norman Tebbit demanded that immigrant and national minority communities forget about their countries of origin. Since last year in particular, when there was a storm of protest over Salman Rushdie's book, an unprecendented campaign has been launched by the ruling circles against the Asian communities in Britain.

Everything connected with the sub-continent is portrayed as barbaric and medieval. The true progressive traditions of the people are obscured, while backward practices are promoted as the real manifestations of Asian culture. The youth in particular is singled out for this barrage.

A people oblivious of their own past are like a ship without bearings - drifting aimlessly till it runs aground. The people from the South Asian region living in Britain must unite with all the working people and democratic forces here. But this does not mean that they should forget about their own history and culture. It is necessary to defy those who would have us give up our traditions by boldly proclaiming our best traditions, such as those personified by Shaheed Udham Singh.

These are some of the reasons why we think it important to celebrate the anniversary of Shaheed Udham Singh's martyrdom in a spirit that is in keeping with his spirit of devotion to the cause of freedom.

Life and work of Udham Singh

Udham Singh was born in 1899 in a village called Sunam in Punjab. His father, Sardar Tehl Singh was a small farmer. Udham Singh lost his mother at the early age of three, and his father died when he was only five years old. He was brought up by the Khalsa Orphanage in Amritsar.

Udham Singh was an apprentice carpenter in Amritsar in 1919, at the time of the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre. He was present at the meeting and, according to some accounts, was engaged as a helper, carrying drinking water to the participants. The brutality of the massacre left an indelible impression on his mind. He turned to revolutionary politics and dedicated his whole life to the cause of the people. Around that time he left India and traveled to the U.S. where he linked up with the Ghadarites and began working for them. His duties included driving new arrivals from India to secure destinations and making arrangements for their stays abroad. He then received a message e from his comrade-in-arms, Bhagat Singh, who instructed him to return to India with a consignment of weapons.

Udham Singh returned to India in 1927 with some firearms, but he was betrayed and arrested soon after his arrival. He was sentenced to four years in prison. This was the period of the violent campaign in the Punjab against the colonial government, led by the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association of Bhagat Singh and Chandarshehkar Azad. The campaign ended following the martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru in 1931.

Udham Singh was still in prison at that time. When he was released, he vowed to follow in the footsteps of his comrade and hero Bhagat Singh and avenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He was fond of singing the famous ghazal by Bismal:

"Sarfaroshi ki tamana ab hamare dil men hai
Dekhna hai zor kitna baazoo-e-qatil men hai"

(Now that we are happy and willing to lay down our lives,
Does the enemy have enough strength in his sword-arm?)

Udham Singh managed to give the police a slip and fled abroad for a second time. He traveled widely, visiting Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Germany and Russia, making contact with Indian revolutionaries abroad wherever he went. Finally, in 1933, he arrived in Britain using the name Ram Mohammed Singh Azad. He established links with the then tiny Indian community in London, as well as other freedom-fighters, including Irish patriots.

Udham Singh had planned to execute Michael O'Dwyer in order to restore the dignity of the Indian people which had been sullied by their slavery to British imperialism. Jallianwalla Bagh was a most sordid chapter in the colonial history of our land, and Udham Singh believed that the Indian people must have the final word before closing this chapter once and for all.

He worked as a handyman and driver in O'Dwyer's hometown in Devon. In the course of this, he had many opportunities to execute O'Dwyer and escape unnoticed. He was not, however, interested in taking any action that could have been interpreted as the work of a lone assassin, devoid of its political implications. Instead, he waited patiently for seven years until an opportunity presented itself when he could make a public statement by his action.

On 13 March 1940, a meeting was held in Caxton Hall in London by an association of retired and serving British colonial officials in India. The chief guest was Michael O'Dwyer, and other speakers included men from the highest echelons of British colonial power in India. At the end of the meeting Udham Singh shot O'Dwyer and five other colonial "dignitaries", killing O'Dwyer and wounding the others.

    Ram Mohammed Singh Azad

Udham Singh gave himself up and publicly stated his motives for the attack. Under interrogation he consistently used the name of Ram Mohammed Singh Azad. Even after the police had established the true facts about him including his real name, he did not abandon the use ofthis alias. This caused some irritation to his captors who could not understand Udham Singh's reason for sticking to an alias when it had been exposed as false. What they failed to appreciate was that this brave freedom-fighter, instead of being unnerved in the face of a death penalty, was making a final gesture for the unity of the Indian people against colonial slavery. By making such a gesture, Udham Singh proclaimed to the whole world that his sacrifice was in the name of the Indian people, regardless of their religious or other differences. On 31 July 1940, Udham Singh joined the proud ranks of his comrade Shaheed Bhagat Singh and the countless others before him who did not flinch from making the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of their homeland and the rights of the people. They occupy a place of honour in the hearts of the freedom-loving peoples of the South Asian sub-continent.

    Udham Singh's Final Speech

July 31, 2000, marks the 60th Anniversary of the execution of Shaheed Udham Singh by the British government. On 4 June 1940 he was brought before Justice Atkinson in the Central Criminal Court and charged with the murder of Sir Michael O'Dwyer, the mastermind of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, which claimed the lives of several hundred innocent and unarmed Indian men, women and children, whose only crime had been to attend a peaceful protest meeting. Udham Singh pleaded not guilty. The trial lasted two days, at the end of which Udham Singh was found guilty and sentenced to death.

On 15 July the Court of Criminal Appeal heard and dismissed Udham Singh's appeal against the death sentence, and he was hanged at Pentonville Prison on 31 July. Prior to passing sentence, Justice Atkinson asked Udham Singh if he had anything to say, to which the latter replied in the affirmative and proceeded to read from prepared notes. Throughout he was repeatedly interrupted by the Judge, who ordered the press not to report Udham Singh's statement, which has remained buried for 56 years in the dark rooms reserved for secret government documents.

At long last it has been released to the Public Records Office, file MEPO 3/1743. The IWA-GB and LALKAR proudly report this statement, which clearly brings out Udham Singh's intense hatred of British imperialism, his ardent love for India and his burning desire to see it free, and also his internationalism, his love for the international proletariat, including the British proletariat.

SHORTHAND NOTES OF THE STATEMENT MADE BY UDHAM SINGH

The Judge asked Udham Singh if he had anything to say as to why a sentence should not be passed upon him according to Law. Facing the Judge, he exclaimed:

"I say down with British Imperialism. You say India does not have peace. We have only slavery. Generations of so called civilization has brought us everything filthy and degenerating known to the human race. All you have to do is to read your own history. If you have any human decency in you you should die with shame. The brutality and bloodthirsty way in which the so called intellectuals, who call themselves rulers of civilization in the world are of <admin-profanity filter activated> blood...

JUSTICE ATKINSON: I am not going to listen to a political speech. If you have anything relevant to say about this case say it.
UDHAM SINGH: I have to say this. I wanted to protest.

The accused brandished the sheaf of papers from which he had been reading.

THE JUDGE: Is it in English?
UDHAM SINGH: You can understand what I am reading now.
THE JUDGE: I will understand much more if you give it to me to read.
UDHAM SINGH: I want the Jury, I want the whole lot to hear it.
MR. G.B. MC CLURE (Prosecuting) reminded the Judge that under Section 6 of the Emergency Powers Act he could direct that Udham Singh's speech be not reported or that it could be heard in camera.
THE JUDGE (To the accussed): You may take it that nothing will be published of what you say. You must speak to the point. Now go on.
UDHAM SINGH: I am protesting. This is what I mean. I am quite innocent about that address. I never understood about that address. I am going to read this now.
    THE JUDGE: Well, go on.

While the accused was perusing the papers, the Judge reminded him "; You are only to say why sentence should not be passed according to law".

UDHAM SINGH (shouting): "I do not care about sentence of death. It means nothing at all. I do not care about dying or anything. I do not worry about it at all. I am dying for a purpose". Thumping the rail of the dock, he exclaimed: "We are suffering from the British Empire!." Udham Singh continued more quietly:

"I am not afraid to die. I am proud to die, to have to free my native land and I hope that when I am gone, I hope that in my place will come thousands of my countrymen to drive you dirty dogs out, to free my country...

I am standing before an English jury. I am in an English court. You people go to India and when you come back you are given a price and put in the House of Commons. We come to England and we are sentenced to death. I never meant anything; but I will take it. I do not care anything about it, but when you dirty dogs come to India there comes a time when you will be cleaned out of India. All your British Imperialism will be smashed. Machine guns on the streets of India mow down thousands of poor women and children wherever your so called flag of democracy and Christianity flies. Your conduct, your conduct -

I am talking about the British government. I have nothing against the English people at all. I have more English friends living in England that I have in India. I have great sympathy with the workers of England. I am against the Imperialist government. Your people are suffering workers. Everyone are suffering through these dirty dogs; these mad beasts.

India is only slavery. Killing, mutilating and destroying - British Imperialism. People do not read about it in the papers. We know what is going on in India".

JUSTICE ATKINSON: I am not going to hear any more.
UDHAM SINGH: You do not want to listen to any more because you are tired of my speech, eh? I have a lot to say yet.
THE JUDGE: I am not going to hear any more of that statement.
UDHAM SINGH: You asked me what I have to say. I am saying it. Because you people are dirty. You do not want to hear from us what you are doing in India.

Thrusting his glasses back into his pocket, Udham Singh exclaimed three words in Hindustani and then shouted:

"Down with British Imperialism! Down with British dirty dogs"!

As he turned to leave the dock, the accused spat across the solicitors table. After Singh had left the dock the Judge turned to the press and said:

"I give direction to the Press not to report any of the statements made by the accussed in the dock. You understand, members of the press?"

    Dargahi Ticket

Divinely commissioned and appointed by His great Master to spread the gospel of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, He set out to scatter that unique flavour far and wide, the like of which has not been seen so far, and is far beyond the limits of human endeavour.

He unfolded the Supreme grandeur of Sri Guru Granth Sahib splendidly and glorified the eternal Sri Guru Granth Sahib as the living Guru Nanak magnificently. Blessing of Sri Guru Granth Sahib was supreme and He advised everyone to invoke that blessing by completing one path of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in a month in the following manner:

Complete recitation of the whole of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in a month.

Complete 50 paths of Sri Sukhmani Sahib in a month; recite 2 paths of Sri Sukhmani Sahib daily.

Complete 250 paths of Jap Ji Sahib in a month; recite 10 paths of Jap Ji Sahib daily.

Complete 180 Malas (Rosary Mala of 108 beads) of Mool Mantra (from Ekonkar to Nanak Hosi Bhi Such) in a month; do six malas daily.

Complete 80 Malas daily of Gur Mantar 'Waheguru'; 20 Malas of Waheguru if the Nam is recited four times on each bead.

Complete 160 Malas daily of Ram (Nam); 40 Malas if Ram is recited four times on each bead

A Mohammedan was advised to practice and recite the name of Allah on each bead as above.

Hundreds of crores of Sri Guru Granth Sahib's paths were thus distributed as the most blessed Parshad to millions of devotees in His life time and are continuing uninterrupted since then.

He, thus, brought the supreme blessing of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the living Sri Guru Nanak Sahib within easy comprehension, reach and grasp of everyone, educated, uneducated, lettered, unlettered, literate, illiterate and simple village folks. Every one recited Amrit Nam and sang the glory of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib in this simple and easy way.

That was the grand purpose behind His holy advent. Uniqueness and greatness of the Eternal Glory of Sri Guru Granth Sahib was unveiled in its totality. The precious treasure of Lord's Name was thrown open to all. It was so simple, easily understandable within the grasp and practice of simple village folk. He freely distributed this Dargahi ticket destined for Sach Khand.

Though He physically disappeared in August 1943 from this earthly scene, He perennially flows as Eternal presence in this very Dargahi Ticket given as Prashad by Him. Lakhs of refugees from either side during the partition of 1947 experienced the miraculous power of this Dargahi ticket, Dargahi Name with the Eternal presence of the Saviour Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, and were saved. Such was the unique power of Nam He distributed.

In possession of this unique Prashad, Divine Ticket, they passed through the most dreaded naked dance of death, but not a single person blessed with this celestial ticket could be injured or harmed or died an unnatural death.

All Glory to Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj thus blessed millions with unique Prashad of the Lord. Unique Prashad of redeeming Gur Mantar, Mul Mantar, Japji, Sukhmani Sahib, Ram Nam and in addition the paths of Bhagwat Gita and Holy Quran Sharif were distributed as Parshad to Hindus and Muslims in same congregations.

Nam was not the privilege of a selected few. It was open to all It was distributed freely to everyone without any consideration of caste, religion and creed.

By thus propagating the Gospel of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Lakhs of illiterate, simple and plain-hearted villagers were able to feel and experience the spiritual satisfaction of attaining the Grace of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Babaji had thus brought lofty ideals of personal service and worship of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and resultant spiritual attainment within the immediate reach and grasp of millions of completely illiterate folk. Only those who practice, know how wonderful and rewarding this spiritual Sadhana is!

This is Naamdhari belief that Guru Gobind Singh Jee passed on Guruship. sab sikhan ko hukam hai guru maaneyo granth! Plus think about it yourself veerjee/bhenji. The one who sacrificed His everything, father, mother, sons, family, beloved Sikhs, how can we say/think that He would have fear of death and run away?

As i mentioned earlier, i don't know how to send an attachment along with messages on this forum, so i am unable to send the file i have in Gurmukhi about Bhagat Singh.

Secondly, i don't think anyone can judge anyone else as to whether he/she is a true Sikh, nor can it be judged as to "just how Sikh" he/she is. Its between the individual and Guru Sahib. No third person in the middle. Thats it!

All that said and done, it is upto u if u wanna call them "Sikh martyrs" or something else. Everyone is free to have their own opinion. It is also okay if u don't wanna admit that they made the biggest sacrifice for their country. i may be wrong, but i don't feel it is right to judge how Sikh someone is or was, as only Guruji knows that.

Bhagat Singh came into contact with Bhai Randhir Singh and did not remain an atheist anymore. i dunno how to attach files, please tell me how to do so and i will attach a pdf file in Gurmukhi which will explain this better. Also, he wanted to be amritshak before execution which the british didn't allow. Another thing is that he did have the Sikh swaroop by the time of his death although he cut his hair initially. All this is what i have come across from other websites. i admit i could be wrong. There have been websites who claim Bhagat Singh was arya samaji, some say he was atheist. All this could be propaganda just to cover up the fact that he was a Sikh.

Udham Singh also is believed to be a keshdhari Sikh, rather than what is shown in films.

    Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa!
    Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

The book begins with the mention of all the Gursikhs who have helped in the English translation of the book. Further on, Bhai Rama Singh jee mentions certain quotes from SGGS which touched his heart.

Japji Sahib : In the Amrit Vela, the ambrosial hours before dawn, chant the True Name, and contemplate on His Glorious Greatness.

Anand Sahib : The saintly beings and the silent sages search for the Ambrosial Nectar, this Amrit is obtained from the Guru.

O my eyes, the Lord has infused His Light into you; do not look upon any other than the Lord.

O my ears, you were created only to hear the Truth.

Sukhmani Sahib : Meditate, and by meditating continually, find contentment and happiness.

One, whose eyes do not gze upon the beauty of other women (other than spouse)

One whose heart is mercifully blessed with abiding humility, O Nanak, is liberated here, and obtains peace hereafter.

Bhai Rama Singh jee has also said that he experienced 4 unusual happenings. First : a divine message in the jungles of Hardwar. Second : a partakh darshan of Guru Gobind Singh. Third : gift of simran at amrit vela. Fouth : a dream of Khalsa Raj.

Bhai Sahib starts out by talking about his childhood. He was born in a so-called high caste Hindu family, and used to recite God’s name Hare Ram Hare Ram. He also mentions his realizing that human life is precious, and wasting it would mean another 8.4 million life forms before one could become a human again. He felt sad on seeing animals being treated with cruelty, and didn’t want that to be his fate. Therefore, simran became his aim. He talks about how selfish this world is, and gives an example story of an old man who wasn’t treated properly by his daughters-in-law until they were told that he would be leaving them with a lot of wealth. He also talks about sadhus practicing sever austereties to attain God, whereas Gurbani clearly states that only by simran can God be achieved. Not only this, Bhai Sahib also tells the story of 3 fake sadhus who tricked the entire village and fled with a lot of money after fooling people into believing their lies. Bhai Sahib then tells how the Jains initiate a person into sainthood : by removing the person’s hair after rubbing ashes on his scalp, making it really painful and unimaginable.

    More to come

    love can work wonders!

fatehsingh veerjee, anyone who disrespects SRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB JEE, what kind of tolerance are we as Sikhs expected to show them? Yes in a way you are right that as a forum this may seem not all that right, but then again we are not stopping any naamdharis to come here and refute whats been said, are we? If that was done, then it could have been pointed out as intolerance. This is just a sakhi telling us that the love of a true Khalsa for Guruji is enough to scare off anyone who doesn't respect Guruji, and that too without using any force at all. Lets appreciate that amazing love!!

    Human life is precious

    Aasaa:
Says Shaykh Fareed, O my dear friend, attach yourself to the Lord.
This body shall turn to dust, and its home shall be a neglected graveyard. ||1||
You can meet the Lord today, O Shaykh Fareed, if you restrain your bird-like desires which keep your mind in turmoil. ||1||Pause||
If I had known that I was to die, and not return again,
I would not have ruined myself by clinging to the world of falsehood. ||2||
So speak the Truth, in righteousness, and do not speak falsehood.
The disciple ought to travel the route, pointed out by the Guru. ||3||
Seeing the youths being carried across, the hearts of the beautiful young soul-brides are encouraged.
Those who side with the glitter of gold, are cut down with a saw. ||4||
O Shaykh, no one's life is permanent in this world.
That seat, upon which we now sit - many others sat on it and have since departed. ||5||
As the swallows appear in the month of Katik, forest fires in the month of Chayt, and lightning in Saawan,
and as the bride's arms adorn her husband's neck in winter;||6||
Just so, the transitory human bodies pass away. Reflect upon this in your mind.
It takes six months to form the body, but it breaks in an instant. ||7||
O Fareed, the earth asks the sky, ""Where have the boatmen gone?""
Some have been cremated, and some lie in their graves; their souls are suffering rebukes. ||8||2||

Fareed, when there was time for you to earn good karma, you were in love with the world instead.
Now, death has a strong foothold; when the load is full, it is taken away. ||8||

Fareed, the hours of the day are lost wandering around, and the hours of the night are lost in sleep.
God will call for your account, and ask you why you came into this world. ||38||

Fareed, where are your mother and father, who gave birth to you?
They have left you, but even so, you are not convinced that you shall also have to go. ||73||

Fareed, the mansions are vacant; those who lived in them have gone to live underground.
They remain there, in those unhonored graves.
O Shaykh, dedicate yourself to God; you will have to depart, today or tomorrow. ||97||

    The moment of death

    Shaloks Of Shaykh Fareed Jee:
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
The day of the bride's wedding is pre-ordained.
On that day, the Messenger of Death, of whom she had only heard, comes and shows its face.
It breaks the bones of the body and pulls the helpless soul out.
That pre-ordained time of marriage cannot be avoided. Explain this to your soul.
The soul is the bride, and death is the groom. He will marry her and take her away.
After the body sends her away with its own hands, whose neck will it embrace?
The bridge to hell is narrower than a hair; haven't you heard of it with your ears?
Fareed, the call has come; be careful now - don't let yourself be robbed. ||1||

Fareed, your beautiful body shall break apart, and the subtle thread of the breath shall be snapped.
In which house will the Messenger of Death be a guest today? ||68||

    Do not slander

Fareed, if you have a keen understanding, then do not write black marks against anyone else.
Look underneath your own collar instead. ||6||

    Return hatred with love

Fareed, do not turn around and strike those who strike you with their fists.
Kiss their feet, and return to your own home. ||7||

The whole world burns in the fire of sorrow

Fareed, I thought that I was in trouble; the whole world is in trouble!
When I climbed the hill and looked around, I saw this fire in each and every home. ||81||

    Accept God's Will

    Fifth Mehl:
Fareed, look upon pleasure and pain as the same; eradicate corruption from your heart.
Whatever pleases the Lord God is good; understand this, and you will reach His Court. ||109||

    Profane music

Raag Bilaaval, Fifth Mehl, Chau-Padas And Du-Padas, Sixth House:
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
O my fascinating Lord, let me not listen to the faithless cynic, singing his songs and tunes, and chanting his useless words. ||1||Pause||
I serve, serve, serve, serve the Holy Saints; forever and ever, I do this.
The Primal Lord, the Great Giver, has blessed me with the gift of fearlessness. Joining the Company of the Holy, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||
My tongue is imbued with the Praises of the inaccessible and unfathomable Lord, and my eyes are drenched with the Blessed Vision of His Darshan.
Be Merciful to me, O Destroyer of the pains of the meek, that I may enshrine Your Lotus Feet within my heart. ||2||
Beneath all, and above all; this is the vision I saw.
I have destroyed, destroyed, destroyed my pride, since the True Guru implanted His Mantra within me. ||3||
Immeasurable, immeasurable, immeasurable is the Merciful Lord; he cannot be weighed. He is the Lover of His devotees.
Whoever enters the Sanctuary of Guru Nanak, is blessed with the gifts of fearlessness and peace. ||4||||1||81||

    Singing and dancing

    Gauree Gwaarayree, Third Mehl:
Some sing on and on, but their minds do not find happiness.
In egotism, they sing, but it is wasted uselessly.
Those who love the Naam, sing the song.
They contemplate the True Bani of the Word, and the Shabad. ||1||
They sing on and on, if it pleases the True Guru.
Their minds and bodies are embellished and adorned, attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
Some sing, and some perform devotional worship.
Without heart-felt love, the Naam is not obtained.
True devotional worship consists of love for the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
The devotee keeps his Beloved clasped tightly to his heart. ||2||
    The fools perform devotional worship by showing off;
they dance and dance and jump all around, but they only suffer in terrible pain.
By dancing and jumping, devotional worship is not performed.
But one who dies in the Word of the Shabad, obtains devotional worship. ||3||
The Lord is the Lover of His devotees; He inspires them to perform devotional worship.
True devotional worship consists of eliminating selfishness and conceit from within.
My True God knows all ways and means.
O Nanak, He forgives those who recognize the Naam. ||4||4||24||

    Foul language

    Shalok, First Mehl:
O Nanak, speaking insipid words, the body and mind become insipid.
He is called the most insipid of the insipid; the most insipid of the insipid is his reputation.
The insipid person is discarded in the Court of the Lord, and the insipid one's face is spat upon.
The insipid one is called a fool; he is beaten with shoes in punishment. ||1||

    Agony of a soul

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
Raag Soohee, The Word Of Shaykh Fareed Jee:
Burning and burning, writhing in pain, I wring my hands.
I have gone insane, seeking my Husband Lord.
O my Husband Lord, You are angry with me in Your Mind.
The fault is with me, and not with my Husband Lord. ||1||
O my Lord and Master, I do not know Your excellence and worth.
Having wasted my youth, now I come to regret and repent. ||1||Pause||
O black bird, what qualities have made you black?
"I have been burnt by separation from my Beloved."
Without her Husband Lord, how can the soul-bride ever find peace?
When He becomes merciful, then God unites us with Himself. ||2||
The lonely soul-bride suffers in the pit of the world.
She has no companions, and no friends.
In His Mercy, God has united me with the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
And when I look again, then I find God as my Helper. ||3||
The path upon which I must walk is very depressing.
It is sharper than a two-edged sword, and very narrow.
That is where my path lies.
O Shaykh Fareed, think of that path early on. ||4||1||

    Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa!
    Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

For quite sometime I have been bookmarking some shabads after running a search on Sikhitothemax. Its amazing how Gurbani has ALL the answers to ALL your questions, pains and problems. I am going to paste some of those shabads here under the heading of what I think they deal with.

    A good Sikh

Blessed is the glimpse and the company of the Guru because there only one visualizes God alone in all the six philosophies.
Getting enlightened, one identifies the teachings of the Guru even in the secular affairs.
Having one women as wife he (the Sikh) is a celebate and considers any other's wife his daughter or a sister.
To covet another man's property is forbidden (to a Sikh) as the swine is to the Muslim and the cow to a Hindu.
The Sikh being householder abnegates tonsure, the sacred thread (Janeu), etc. and forsakes them like abominable faeces.
The Sikh of the Guru accepts transcendental Lord as the sole fount of higher knowledge and the meditation.
In the congregation of such people any body could become authentic as well as respectable.

A moment of pleasure and endless pain

    Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
For a moment of sexual pleasure, you shall suffer in pain for millions of days.
For an instant, you may savor pleasure, but afterwards, you shall regret it, again and again. ||1||
O blind man, meditate on the Lord, the Lord, your King.
Your day is drawing near. ||1||Pause||
You are deceived, beholding with your eyes, the bitter melon and swallow-wort.
But, like the companionship of a poisonous snake, so is the desire for another's spouse. ||2||
For the sake of your enemy, you commit sins, while you neglect the reality of your faith.
Your friendship is with those who abandon you, and you are angry with your friends. ||3||
The entire world is entangled in this way; he alone is saved, who has the Perfect Guru.
Says Nanak, I have crossed over the terrifying world-ocean; my body has become sanctified. ||4||5||127||

Follow only the Guru and no one else

    Fourth Mehl:
The self-willed manmukh is occupied with greed all day long, although he may claim otherwise.
At night, he is overcome by fatigue, and all his nine holes are weakened.
Over the head of the manmukh is the order of the woman; to her, he ever holds out his promises of goodness.
Those men who act according to the orders of women are impure, filthy and foolish.
Those impure men are engrossed in sexual desire; they consult their women and walk accordingly.
One who walks as the True Guru tells him to, is the true man, the best of the best.
He Himself created all women and men; the Lord Himself plays every play.
You created the entire creation; O Nanak, it is the best of the best. ||2||

( Note : Before anyone raises a cry, this is Gurbani. We all agree that Guruji is talking about evil people and not labelling any gender as bad. )

    False worldly love

    Raag Dayv-Gandhaaree, Ninth Mehl:
In this world, I have seen love to be false.
Whether they are spouses or friends, all are concerned only with their own happiness. ||1||Pause||
All say, ""Mine, mine"", and attach their consciousness to you with love.
But at the very last moment, none shall go along with you. How strange are the ways of the world! ||1||
The foolish mind has not yet reformed itself, although I have grown weary of continually instructing it.
O Nanak, one crosses over the terrifying world-ocean, singing the Songs of God. ||2||3||6||38||47||

    He takes care of all

    Raag Goojaree, Fifth Mehl:
Why, O mind, do you plot and plan, when the Dear Lord Himself provides for your care?
From rocks and stones He created living beings; He places their nourishment before them. ||1||
O my Dear Lord of souls, one who joins the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, is saved.
By Guru's Grace, the supreme status is obtained, and the dry wood blossoms forth again in lush greenery. ||1||Pause||
Mothers, fathers, friends, children and spouses-no one is the support of anyone else.
For each and every person, our Lord and Master provides sustenance. Why are you so afraid, O mind? ||2||
The flamingoes fly hundreds of miles, leaving their young ones behind.
Who feeds them, and who teaches them to feed themselves? Have you ever thought of this in your mind? ||3||
All the nine treasures, and the eighteen supernatural powers are held by our Lord and Master in the Palm of His Hand.
Servant Nanak is devoted, dedicated, forever a sacrifice to You, Lord. Your Expanse has no limit, no boundary. ||4||5||

    How to get peace

    Bhairao, Fifth Mehl:
There is no peace in earning lots of money.
There is no peace in watching dances and plays.
There is no peace in conquering lots of countries.
All peace comes from singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||
You shall obtain peace, poise and bliss,
when you find the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, by great good fortune. As Gurmukh, utter the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||Pause||
Mother, father, children and spouse - all place the mortal in bondage.
Religious rituals and actions done in ego place the mortal in bondage.
If the Lord, the Shatterer of bonds, abides in the mind,
then peace is obtained, dwelling in the home of the self deep within. ||2||
Everyone is a beggar; God is the Great Giver.
The Treasure of Virtue is the Infinite, Endless Lord.
That person, unto whom God grants His Mercy
    - that humble being chants the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||
I offer my prayer to my Guru.
O Primal Lord God, Treasure of Virtue, please bless me with Your Grace.
Says Nanak, I have come to Your Sanctuary.
If it pleases You, please protect me, O Lord of the World. ||4||28||41||

    No satisfaction

    Dhanaasaree, Fifth Mehl:
The desires of the greatest of the great kings and landlords cannot be satisfied.
They remain engrossed in Maya, intoxicated with the pleasures of their wealth; their eyes see nothing else at all. ||1||
No one has ever found satisfaction in sin and corruption.
The flame is not satisfied by more fuel; how can one be satisfied without the Lord? ||Pause||
Day after day, he eats his meals with many different foods, but his hunger is not eradicated.
He runs around like a dog, searching in the four directions. ||2||
The lustful, lecherous man desires many women, and he never stops peeking into the homes of others.
Day after day, he commits adultery again and again, and then he regrets his actions; he wastes away in misery and greed. ||3||
The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is incomparable and priceless; it is the treasure of Ambrosial Nectar.
The Saints abide in peace, poise and bliss; O Nanak, through the Guru, this is known. ||4||6||

    Raag Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
The thirst of only a few is quenched. ||1||Pause||
People may accumulate hundreds of thousands, millions, tens of millions, and yet the mind is not restrained.
They only yearn for more and more. ||1||
They may have all sorts of beautiful women, but still, they commit adultery in the homes of others.
They do not distinguish between good and bad. ||2||
They wander around lost, trapped in the myriad bonds of Maya; they do not sing the Praises of the Treasure of Virtue.
Their minds are engrossed in poison and corruption. ||3||
Those, unto whom the Lord shows His Mercy, remain dead while yet alive. In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, they cross over the ocean of Maya.
O Nanak, those humble beings are honored in the Court of the Lord. ||4||1||154||

    Easier said than done

Siree Raag, Fifth Mehl, Seventh House:
Relying on Your Mercy, Dear Lord, I have indulged in sensual pleasures.
Like a foolish child, I have made mistakes. O Lord, You are my Father and Mother. ||1||
It is easy to speak and talk,
but it is difficult to accept Your Will. ||1||Pause||
I stand tall; You are my Strength. I know that You are mine.
Inside of all, and outside of all, You are our Self-sufficient Father. ||2||
O Father, I do not know-how can I know Your Way?
He frees us from bondage, O Saints, and saves us from possessiveness. ||3||
Becoming Merciful, my Lord and Master has ended my comings and goings in reincarnation.
Meeting with the Guru, Nanak has recognized the Supreme Lord God. ||4||27||97||

    Worldly relations

O man, you have not remembered the creator and have accepted the created as your creator.
Getting engrossed in wife or husband you have further created relationships of son, grandson, father and grandfather.
Daughters and sisters proudly become happy or annoyed and such is the case of all relatives.
All other relation's such as the house of father-in-law, one's mother's house, the house of the maternal uncles and other relations of the family are disdainful.
If conduct and thoughts are civilised, one gets honour before the high ups of the society.
However, at the end, when caught up in the web of death, no companion takes notice of the person.
Bereft of the grace of the perfect Guru, all persons become scared of death.

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
    Raag Saarang, Ninth Mehl:
No one will be your help and support, except the Lord.
Who has any mother, father, child or spouse? Who is anyone's brother or sister? ||1||Pause||
All the wealth, land and property which you consider your own
    - when you leave your body, none of it shall go along with you. Why do you cling to them? ||1||
God is Merciful to the meek, forever the Destroyer of fear, and yet you do not develop any loving relationship with Him.
Says Nanak, the whole world is totally false; it is like a dream in the night. ||2||1||

    Nothing belongs to you

Todee, Fifth Mehl, Third House, Chau-Padas:
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
Oh! Oh! You cling to Maya, you fool; this is not a trivial matter.
That which you consider to be yours, is not yours. ||Pause||
You do not remember your Lord, even for an instant.
That which belongs to others, you believe to be your own. ||1||
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is always with you, but you do not enshrine it within your mind.
You have attached your consciousness to that which you must eventually abandon. ||2||
You collect that which will bring you only hunger and thirst.
You have not obtained the supplies of the Ambrosial Naam. ||3||
You have fallen into the pit of sexual desire, anger and emotional attachment.
By Guru's Grace, O Nanak, a rare few are saved. ||4||1||16||

The only true relationship is with God

    Maaroo, First Mehl:
Neither the sisters, nor the sisters-in-law, nor the mothers-in-law, shall remain.
The true relationship with the Lord cannot be broken; it was established by the Lord, O sister soul-brides. ||1||
I am a sacrifice to my Guru; I am forever a sacrifice to Him.
Wandering so far without the Guru, I grew weary; now, the Guru has united me in Union with my Husband Lord. ||1||Pause||
    Aunts, uncles, grandparents and sisters-in-law
    - they all come and go; they cannot remain. They are like boatloads of passengers embarking. ||2||
Uncles, aunts, and cousins of all sorts, cannot remain.
The caravans are full, and great crowds of them are loading up at the riverbank. ||3||
O sister-friends, my Husband Lord is dyed in the color of Truth.
She who lovingly remembers her True Husband Lord is not separated from Him again. ||4||
All the seasons are good, in which the soul-bride falls in love with the True Lord.
That soul-bride, who knows her Husband Lord, sleeps in peace, night and day. ||5||
At the ferry, the ferryman announces, ""O travellers, hurry up and cross over.""
I have seen them crossing over there, on the boat of the True Guru. ||6||
Some are getting on board, and some have already set out; some are weighed down with their loads.
Those who deal in Truth, remain with their True Lord God. ||7||
I am not called good, and I see none who are bad.
O Nanak, one who conquers and subdues his ego, becomes just like the True Lord. ||8||2||10||

    Wake up

    Bihaagraa, Fifth Mehl, Chhant:
Why are you imbued with the love of another? That path is very dangerous.
O sinner, no one is your friend.
No one shall be your friend, and you shall forever regret your actions.
You have not chanted with your tongue the Praises of the Sustainer of the World; when will these days come again?
The leaf, separated from the branch, shall not be joined with it again; all alone, it falls on its way to death.
Prays Nanak, without the Lord's Name, the soul wanders, forever suffering. ||1||
You are practicing deception secretly, but the Lord, the Knower, knows all.
When the Righteous Judge of Dharma reads your account, you shall be squeezed like a sesame seed in the oil-press.
For the actions you committed, you shall suffer the penalty; you shall be consigned to countless reincarnations.
Imbued with the love of Maya, the great enticer, you shall lose the jewel of this human life.
Except for the One Name of the Lord, you are clever in everything else.
Prays Nanak, those who have such pre-ordained destiny are attracted to doubt and emotional attachment. ||2||
No one advocates for the ungrateful person, who is separated from the Lord.
The hard-hearted Messenger of Death comes and seizes him.
He seizes him, and leads him away, to pay for his evil deeds; he was imbued with Maya, the great enticer.
He was not Gurmukh - he did not chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe; and now, the hot irons are put to his chest.
He is ruined by sexual desire, anger and egotism; deprived of spiritual wisdom, he comes to regret.
Prays Nanak, by his cursed destiny he has gone astray; with his tongue, he does not chant the Name of the Lord. ||3||
Without You, God, no one is our savior.
It is Your Nature, Lord, to save the sinners.
O Savior of sinners, I have entered Your Sanctuary, O Lord and Master, Compassionate Ocean of Mercy.
Please, rescue me from the deep, dark pit, O Creator, Cherisher of all hearts.
I seek Your Sanctuary; please, cut away these heavy bonds, and give me the Support of the One Name.
Prays Nanak, please, give me Your Hand and save me, O Lord of the Universe, Merciful to the meek. ||4||
That day is judged to be fruitful, when I merged with my Lord.
Total happiness was revealed, and pain was taken far away.
Peace, tranquility, joy and eternal happiness come from constantly singing the Glorious Praises of the Sustainer of the World.
Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I lovingly remember the Lord; I shall not wander again in reincarnation.
He has naturally hugged me close in His Loving Embrace, and the seed of my primal destiny has sprouted.
Prays Nanak, He Himself has met me, and He shall never again leave me. ||5||4||7||

    Siree Raag, Fifth Mehl:
People eat what they believe to be sweet, but it turns out to be bitter in taste.
They attach their affections to brothers and friends, uselessly engrossed in corruption.
They vanish without a moment's delay; without God's Name, they are stunned and amazed. ||1||
O my mind, attach yourself to the service of the True Guru.
Whatever is seen, shall pass away. Abandon the intellectualizations of your mind. ||1||Pause||
Like the mad dog running around in all directions,
the greedy person, unaware, consumes everything, edible and non-edible alike.
Engrossed in the intoxication of sexual desire and anger, people wander through reincarnation over and over again. ||2||
Maya has spread out her net, and in it, she has placed the bait.
The bird of desire is caught, and cannot find any escape, O my mother.
One who does not know the Lord who created him, comes and goes in reincarnation over and over again. ||3||
By various devices, and in so many ways, this world is enticed.
They alone are saved, whom the All-powerful, Infinite Lord protects.
The servants of the Lord are saved by the Love of the Lord. O Nanak, I am forever a sacrifice to them. ||4||21||91||

The Karni Namah and the Raj Namah are two significant chapters of the Sau Sakhi, the Sikh book of prophecy. The Raj Namah appears in, The History Of The Sikhs, by J D Cunningham on p. 340. Cunningham came across this document during the mid 19th century. He states that these ?compositions are of course fabulous as regards Nanak, and appear to be the compositions of the commencement or middle of the last century?.

The Karni Namah was told to Qazi Rukan Din, Pir Bahaoud Din, Ghous, Kuthab, Saalaar, Hajji, Sheikh and Mushaikh Aulviya, who sat with Guru Nanak at religious discussions. The Raj Namah was told to Kaarun, the Emperor of Rome, on Guru Nanak?s return from medina.

These prophecies were in the Old Janam Sakhi?s written by Bhai Bala, who accompanied Guru Nanak on his travels. However, the British removed them.

?Raaj Karega Khalsa Aaki Rahai Na Koe.

Khuaar Hoe Sab Milengai Bachai Sharan Jo Hoe?.

This is said by the Sikhs in their daily Ardas. As it can be seen, the Karni Nama is the only source of these words.

    Karni Nama

While Guru Nanak was in Mecca and Medina, Qazi Rukan Din asked, ?True King, tell us your prophecy again. Tell us how you will unfold the future?.
Your name is Nanak Nirankari and you are from the Nation of the Lord. What are the instructions for the future?

Nanak replied Rukan Din, ?listen to the true answer?
Whosoever reads or listens to this shall be content. All doubts shall be removed.

In the tenth dress shall reside The Lord.

I shall fight many battles against Emperor Aurangzeb.

I shall then send a letter of victory (Zafarnamah) to Aurangzeb with my Singh (Bhai Daya Singh).

Upon seeing him, Power shall lessen and he shall forget his devious ways.

Emperor Aurangzeb will be overwhelmed by the sight of Daya Singh and will start to tremble.

?The Khalsa been resurrected! Good has not been done by Gobind Singh!?

I shall vanish (from sight) having given a kingdom; My name being Gobind

There will be a time when the Khalsa shall forget the teachings I have given them. Sikhi will only be left in name. Many Wars shall occur.

I will have to return again to resurrect the Khalsa. They shall reside in the Punjab.

I shall make people from all four corners into one.

They will be in Majjha; They will raid Lahore.

They will bring Potohaar to justice; They will take Peshawar.

They will set up a cantonment at Attock and then open the Khyber Pass.

They will establish a kingdom in Kabul and then take Ghazni.

After bringing Hazaara to justice they will march on to Kandahar.

After taking Balack and Buckaara, they will conquer Sindh and Baloch.

After gaining victory over these lands they shall govern all the people.

Mecca, Medina and Rome shall tremble.

They shall gain victory in battle over south and west India.

The Guru?s Army shall sit at the throne of Delhi.

Umbrellas of kingship shall sway over their heads. All shall be content.

From East to West all shall be conquered. None shall challenge the Khalsa. All humanity shall become one.

In the kingdom of the True King, Satjug shall be established.

The Khalsa Panth shall rule. The arrows of death shall not touch them.

The Army of the Timeless shall grow and spread like locusts.

All shall wear vestments of blue; no one else shall be seen.

Listen Qazi Rukan Din, ?The Singhs shall rule?.

The Unholy Sheikhs shall be destroyed. Pirs and Mureeds shall be no more.

All shall recite the one name of the Lord. Then he shall come himself.

The untrue shall not be able to see his glory.

All humanity shall unite and he will distribute provinces.

The Earth shall give food and the mountains shall give diamonds.

Fruits of many kinds there shall be, upon the sight of the timeless.

All shall recite VAHEGURU and achieve salvation.

Many Dharamsalas (places of discussion) shall exist. The Koran and the Mosques shall vanish.

The Lord shall manifest himself in body (as man).

He will make all utter VAHEGURU. All Singhs shall flock under his banner.

All shall know him as the True One. He will sit at the throne of Delhi.

He will establish a kingdom of peace and no enemies will remain.

Wherever the Khalsa turns his eye, the 14 realms shall tremble.

For 14,000 years, this kingdom shall remain.

Wealth will be collected and food shall be distributed.

The naked and the starving shall all receive; no one will go without.

Sayeth Nanak, ?Rukan Din, This is how it shall be?.

Whosoever reads the Karni Namah, his love with The Lord shall grow.

The Word of the Timeless shall prevail. Those uttering falsehood shall not remain.

After the effect of The Akaal, forests, mountains and the world shall see salvation.

The Khalsa shall Rule. There will be no-one left to oppose them.

All who are lost shall gain the safety of the Khalsa

    Raj Nama

    Spoken by the First Master

    First, Nanak went to Mecca;

    Medina he afterwards visited.

The lord of Mecca and Medina,

    Kaarun, he made his disciple.

When Nanak was about to depart,

    Kaarun, the fortunate, thus spoke:

Now thou art about to go,

    But when wilt thou return?

    Then the Guru thus answered:

When I put on my tenth dress

    I shall be called Gobind Singh;

    Then shall all Singhs wear their hair;

They shall accept the ?Pahal? of the two-edged Sword

    Then shall the Khalsa be established;

    Then shall men exclaim ?Vaheguru?

    The four races shall become one and the same;

The five weapons shall be worn by all.

    In Kalyug they shall array themselves in vestments of blue;

The name of the Khalsa shall be everywhere.

    In the time of Aurangzeb

    The wondrous Khalsa shall arise.

    Then shall battles be waged,

    Endless war shall ensue,

And fighting shall follow year after year.

They shall place the name of Gobind Singh in their hearts.

When many heads shall be rendered up,

The Empire of the Khalsa shall prevail.

    First, they shall conquer Punjab;

    Then other countries shall be theirs;

    Hindustan and the North shall be possessed by them;

Then the west shall bow to them.

    When they enter Khorasan,

Kabul and Kandahar shall lie low.

When Iran has been laid prostrate,

Arabia shall be conquered and they shall march on to Mecca.

    Mecca shall be beheld,

    And Medina shall be seized.

    Mighty shall be the rejoicing,

    And all shall exclaim ?Vaheguru?.

    Unbelievers shall everywhere be destroyed;

The holy Khalsa shall be exalted.

Beasts and Birds shall tremble in the presence of the Lord.

Men and Women shall everywhere call on God.

The Earth, the Oceans and the Heavens shall call on God.

By calling on the Guru shall men be blessed.

    Every faith shall become of the Khalsa;

    No other religion will remain.

    ?Vaheguru? shall everywhere be repeated,

And pain and trouble shall depart.

In the Kalyug shall the Kingdom be established,

Which Nanak received from the Lord.

    Worthless, I fall before God;

Nanak, the slave, cannot comprehend the ways of the Lord.

Thus replied Nanak to Kaarun?s question.

    Questions:

The coming of Nanak was prophesised thousands of years before his arrival. These prophecies are explicitly detailed in the Vedas and the Puranas, which are amongst the oldest scriptures on Earth.

Whilst at Mecca and Medina, Guru Nanak unfolded futuristic events in the Karni Nama and the Raj Nama. He clearly states that he will have to return to ressurect the Khalsa.

Prophets of the world have all established their religions. Each religion was a requirement of its age, which the prophet was sent to fulfil. The way of the Khalsa is the requirement in the age of Kaljug. It is the tool necessary to defeat Kaljug and establish the kingdom of Satjug.

Presently, the Khalsa appears to be in a state of dormancy. What is required for the Great Guru to show himself? What conditions are required, i.e., how much more of a decline of humanity is required?

Is this decline necessary? What can we do, as Khalsa, to stop this decline from occurring?

What we are currently doing is OBVIOUSLY not working!!!
