  1. Why don't u agree - just curious...coz I've heard mixed opinions on this subject... Sorry - misunderstanding - I mean literally their chuni is barely covering an inch of hair and I don't think that's covering their hair, esp around food!
  2. Hahaha - I can drive and no one's asked me to drive them n e where (phew - I hated driving lessons) - 'rents worried I'll smash the car - u shd hav seen my mum sitting next 2 me the 1 time I drove with her - "mind that car" (that was 2 lanes away), "too close to the curb" (n e farther and I wld have been in the next lane)!! ... and haven't told the relatives either - and not gonna!! On that note...congrats Amrik$ingh!!
  3. Sorry - can't wrk it out 4 myself - gonna hav 2 S.P.E.L.L it out 4 me!! Personally I think u'r messin...u serious??! Waheguru.
  4. Btw - GanM - do not even mention the "teacher" word coz my dad is a teacher, my sister's a teacher, my friend's a teacher...need I go on...??!! I have made it a mission in life NOT to be a teacher - nothing wrong with it and I have total respect 4 all teachers, just..aaahhh - too much teacher talk!! - though I do quite enjoy being the occasional panjabi teacher! Don't know what I'm gonna do after uni.... Waheguru.
  5. what u on about??!! - or shd I say what u on!! U'v totally got be stumped there!!! P.S Thanx 4 the welcomes!
  6. Waheguru ji ka khalsa, Waheguru ji ki fateh. Hey!! my name's Gurbinder and I'm from Wolves - yaay!! (england). I'm 19 and starting my 2nd yr at Oxford Uni studying classics - latin and greek - different, I know - try having to xplain to Indian relatives/friends!! My parents just say "she's studying dead people"! Don't suppose n e one else doing classics here - we shd hook up??!! My interests are sports - rowing (now u know I go to Oxford uni, kinda makes sense, eh?!) and netball. I like reading and I totally love kirtan, which I've been singing and playing since a kid. I also used to play the drums, timpani and xylophone - so I guess u can tell I love music! Btw - great site and respect to all who make it what it is!! WJKK WJKF
  7. WJKK WJKF Firstly - I know this is very belated, but congrats Neo, hope u find being an amritdari very rewarding, as I'm sure u will!! Secondly - I'm an amritdari and I admit I went clubbing with friends a few times last yr at uni (I'd never been clubbing b4), but I don't think it affected me in a bad way and to tell the truth I believe it has made me a stronger person because of it. I do more simran now and feel more closer to waheguru than I have ever been be4 - that has partly to do with the fact that there aren't any amritdaris around me at uni, so it made me want to do more to make myself closer to god, since I don't have any influences from other sikhs that I spend my yr with - plus I've never really had any amritdari friends to whom I can talk to about sikhi, except my younger sisters. So, I think, clubbing can also have the opposite effects to leading u away from sikhi coz u c all the stuff that others do - drinking, smoking etc - and it makes u think how grateful u r 4 being an amritdari and not doing all that stuff!! I don't know if I'll go clubbing again though coz it really doesn't appeal n e more!! Btw - Iron Bangle - know what u mean about englishees staring in clubs coz I'm different from them - what's even funnier is when indians stare - probably shock!!
  8. Waheguru. At my local gdwara the committee peeps on stage r always tellin people, esp the bibia, to be quiet and once a raagi even told them to be quiet in between shabads, but still they don't listen - so what can be done?? I don't think people, esp girls, shd come into darbar sahib with open hair, nor should anyone wear sleeveless tops or shorts or 3/4 length trousers. Ladies (men mentioned in earlier posts) working in the kitchen and serving food shd always have their hair tied back - I've often seen women, who r attending a langar/akand paath, have most of their hair sticking out in all sorts of strange styles, so that they can show off the latest hair fashion, yet their chuni is barely clinging to their heads - and they think that's covering their heads!! Also, all people doing seva in the langar hall shd do simran instead of talking - many stand around with the illusion of doing seva, but r only there to talk 2 their friends. Waheguru
  9. Totally agree with Sukhi_v Get on with life and be4 u know it u'r in love with someone who loves u from the inside out...awwww!!! Waheguru.
  10. WJKK WJKF, Hi, I think I can answer some of your qus, but I don't think I have enough knowledge to answer all of them. In answer to qu8, Guru Gobind Singh Ji did not cry when he was told that his sons had been killed and this is what shockd all the sikhs around him who asked why he wasn't crying and he is said to have said that why should he cry for his 4 sons when he has thousands of other sons (his sikhs) to protect and look after. I don't know where you heard about him crying, but this is what I have read. qu10 - We don't cut our hair because it is a living gift (since it grows) that we have been given by god, so we should look after it. I think that by cutting our hair we are throwing god's gift back in his face and saying we aren't thankful for what we've been given. qu7 - what do u mean by "what proof"? Are you talking about miracles and stuff, of which there r plenty, coz if not, then what proof is there that Jesus preached the word of god?? qu9 - what do u find ritualistic and rigid about sikhism - u r not very clear on that - coz I've been a sikh for almost 10 yrs and I have found it to be one of the less ritualistic religions and there is much more freedom in sikhism than you may find in other religions. qu11 - Sikhs aren't allowed to eat any meat at all, whether it's kosher or not. qu12 - again you do not state what gives Jesus Christ a legitimate claim to being a messenger of god, and not our gurus. qu14 - There is nothing saying that sikhs all over the world worship pictures of the gurus coz as my dad says have you seen/spoke ot all the sikhs in the world to get this idea? The guru jis themselves said that they shldn't be worshipped as idols. People have their pictures to respect them, but i can't speak for everyone. qu18 - gdwaras are open to all. It may just be that "specific castes" attend them, but they would not throw anyone out because they aren't of that caste - besides sikhs don't believe in caste. I admit that different sects seem to have been created within sikhism, so it may not be so much specific castes, but more likely a specific sect attends certain gdwaras. qu19 - I can't say if what I say is 100% correct, but Guru Gobind Singh Ji refered to god as Waheguru, Ram, Hari - basically saying that all religions have their own name for god, but in effect they are all talking about the same god, hence trying to show that there is only one god and he may have many names, but he remains the same. qu20 - It is difficult to answer some of ur qus coz u write a lot of assumptions. As far as I know, Sikhs do not get "upset" when someone leaves sikhi of their own accord, as long as it is that and not force. One of the guru ji's said that if you are a sikh try to be the best sikh u can be, if you are a muslim try to be the best muslim you can be etc - basically whatever religion you are try to be the best. I hope I have answered some of ur qus and I know that I am not an authority on sikhism coz there is still much for me to learn, and I hope you will forgive me if I have written anything out of turn or caused offence. I also hope you find the answers to all ur qus. On that note, I will say Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!
  11. Waheguru ji ka khalsa, waheguru ji ki fateh. There are so many things which take place when one gets married and I'm hopin someone can tell me what is actually tradition and what's part of sikhi e.g. the maiiya 2 days be4 u wed - is it really necessary??!! I'm not gettin married or n e thing, just curious coz I'm an amritdari and I also like the simple life (to an extent!) and I wld only wanna do what our guruji said and not all the hullabaloo (??!!) that surrounds weddings nowayears!! N E thoughts?? Waheguru.
  12. waheguru ji ka khalsa, waheguru ji ki fateh. I've been reading paath since I was a lil kid and I never really understood what I was reading, but something happened this summer - I totally don't understand what it was, but I started doing simran - really concentrating on it and doing it everyday (simran sessions with my sisters - yaay!!) - and I actually started understanding what paath meant and what I was reading. I think simran is an excellent way for getting "in touch" with waheguru and u can slowly take it from there. Must admit though, it is not easy, but if within urself u really want to "feel ur paath" then I'd say u'r already on the right path...
  13. wjkk wjkf I hold the deepest respect for all those sikhs who do try their best to educate kids/adults alike in sikhi. There are many gurmat camps/events held throughout the year where kids who know nothing about sikhi turn up and I think this is a beginning (u hav 2 start somewhere!) to revitalising sikhi youth. The important thing is that this continues and also gives others the courage to "spread the word" (if u like) in their local gurdwaras where many kids turn up simply coz they have to and no one does anything to actually educate them in sikhi - many don't understand gurbani, and I think it is up to those who do understand to help others to. To tell the truth, I helped out at some camps this yr (never havin been be4) and I think I probably learnt just as much as the kids!! - coz u think u know s'thing (havin been an amritdari for so long), but in truth u've been in the dark all the time...simply coz no one who knew took the time to explain...deep stuff!! wjkk wjkf
