I know that this sickens me to my core, thinking that people that we trust so much could have defiled one of our own youth. Waheguru has exposed these evil people, now us as the Sikh sangat need to address these problems. We should learn for our Catholic brothers and sisters that these problems can not be hidden from. One news article quoted a member of the Nanaksar Gurdwara saying, "Priests at the temple are expected to be celibate, and from as young as age eight lead a monastic life of meditation and prayer". He added, "(The priests) are raised in the temples - they don't have a choice in whether they are celibate or not." This leads to the question, since when has celibacy been a Rehit (discipline) or compulsion in Sikhi, and since when has their been priesthood? The Sikh Gurus all married and had a householder's life because this was according to the Gurmat philosophy advocated by Guru Nanak Sahib Ji. The only Guru Sahib who didn't marry was the child-guru, Guru HarKrishan Sahib Ji. The Sikh Gurus not only had happy married lives but also had children. They undermined the commonly held beliefs and rules observed by mystics that marriage and family hindered spiritual progress or led to impurity and showed that family life and marriage is not necessarily a hindrance. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਬਹੈ ਸਪਰਵਾਰਿ ॥ "In the midst of his family, the Gurmukh lives a spiritual life." (238) Guru Nanak Sahib Ji knew that he would be travelling the world, leaving his family to fend for themselves during his long absences, yet Guru Ji also married and had a family. Guru Ji didn't for a moment think: my family will interfere in my seva or bhagti. Celibacy is a personal choice, however Gurbani at any place does not justify or encourage celibacy or make it a compulsion for elevating one's spirituality. Therefore, its definitely not a Rehit for "priests" as preached by Nanaksar. (469) Someone claiming to be a Sikh and instructing others to become celibates or not marry for religious reasons, like Sant Deras are doing, is contrary to Sikhi. According to Gurmat there is no religious requirement, code of conduct or spiritual merit in becoming a celibate. Guru Nanak Sahib Ji recommended gristh jeevan that means the life of a householder, in which husband and wife were equal partners. Fidelity was enjoined upon both. Just as a person as a child first plays in toy cars and then when he gets older he learns to drive a real car, similarly the marital life of man and woman is a partnership and prepares one's soul for the greater marriage of the soul with the Supreme soul. The abuse took place in the Gurughar from the time the child was eight and lasted for five years. Since this story broke in the media, other Sikh youths have now come forward to police regarding sexual abuse they also faced in the Gurughar when they were children.This is truly kaljug when this type of beadbi is being committed in our Gurughars.
