  1. There are a few available, just run a search from the App Store for "Sikh" - there should be a few results. I downloaded one called "Gurbani Anywhere" which contains Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Sri Dasam Granth and Bhai Gurdas Vaaran. It seems to be a pretty good app! I'm not sure re. Blackberry though.
  2. Going by what I saw on a recently screened BBC doco regarding the slaughter of goats in the UK, the animal is stunned first with a bolt gun, hung up and then has its jugular cut/slit. I don't really think this would constitute a "clean" kill as the stunning process doesn't really kill the animal. As such, for rehit purposes I don't think it would be jhatka, but could possibly be classified as non-halal/kuttha I suppose. In my opinion, the best meat to eat in the West if one chooses to do so, would be that classified as organic. Such meat generally has to be rigorously monitored in order to retain that classification. However, the way in which it is slaughtered would probably be the same. The only difference is that the animal doesn't have to be subjected to the conditions that those on factory farms endure.
  3. I think you are right DalSingh101, it definitely looks as if the group on the right are non-Sikhs, quite possibly Afghans or Persians? The group on the left look like they are Sikhs. Very interesting depiction re. the Sikh soldier retrieving his head - I hope someone can provide more info!
  4. Hopefully England put up more of a fight this time, unlike the last time they were here... that tour was an absolute disaster for the most part
  5. I seriously hope this event fails to get under way so a real disaster can be averted. Indians need to wake up and smell the coffee. A handful of billionaires and the materialistic Bollywood fantasy mentality isn't doing anything to help the country fight it's two biggest problems: Poverty and corruption. These issues have been swept under the rug for far too long. In the end, the greatest hilarity is the fact that it wasn't the so called "Sikh extremists" that were the biggest threat to the Games - as stated in numerous news sources in recent months; but rather the ineptitude of the organisers.
  6. Thanks for sharing. I do remember reading somewhere that beef-eating was very common during the Vedic times. In fact, I remember being told by a Nair friend from Kerala that they consumed beef without any qualms.
  7. Looking at that picture makes me loathe the Punjab Police even more. Purveyors of human-rights violations, but now at the forefront of the Animal Liberation movement.
  8. While the police protect cows, the people are left to languish. Gotta love India.
  9. Man, I feel sorry for those kids.. They are the undeserving victims of this sick practice. I can't believe there were people that actually dismissed the medical evidence. I would hate to be a Paki in the UK right now. I don't know what's worse, being called a terrorist or a cousin-shagger (or p*nch*de )
  10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-LEEQXzmQA <-- Doco re. the cyclic notion of time, i.e. the yugas such as satyug etc.

  11. Very interesting, I would have thought that those averages would be a little higher at the very least.
  12. Interestingly, the 'Jatt movies' of the 80's and early 90's have their roots in Pakistani Punjabi cinema, from which they were essentially copied. In fact, most Pakistani Punjabi movies at one point all featured the word "Jatt" in their titles.
  13. The mainstream Indian cinema on a whole (besides a few films now and then) is an insult to one's intelligence. Until they ditch the typical Bollywood masala nonsense, Indian cinema will never be taken seriously on the world stage. It's better that Sikhs invest in more westernised style films and media to portray ourselves (Bend it like Beckham doesn't count lol)
  14. The man is what African-Americans would call an 'Uncle Tom'. If Jews never forget WW2, why should we forget something that happened 26 years ago? Imagine the German Chancellor making a speech in Israel saying, "Guys, lets move on and forget it!". Bakwaas.
  15. I suppose it's the closest one would get to Shastar Pooja in the Western sense? Btw, awesome movie!
  16. I have also often thought of what would happen if there were only a handful of Sikhs left, but there was no Gurbani. What would happen should those Sikhs not be well-versed in Gurbani, or if were not even be very devout at all - would Sikhi perish? Kaljug bro, you have brought up a very valid point that should be actively discussed.
  17. Fantastic! Thanks for sharing! Do you really think it was painted during Guru Sahib's lifetime as has been stated in the excerpt? If so, why has this not been widely known!
  18. While I applaud the effort, the harsh reality is that this Sugar Cane fellow would have been despised by Sant Ji! Unfortunately I think he is just trying to resurrect his career (not sure if he really had one anyway) by pulling on Sikh heartstrings. I'll give it a listen tho!
  19. I for one can't take this 'Ron' seriously considering he doesn't even have the testicular fortitude to use an Indian name. I doubt he would be running his mouth like this if this was the 80's.
  20. For those who have seen it, can anyone elaborate on what Sant Jarnail Singh ji Bhindranwale was saying in the Youtube video before it was removed from Youtube?
  21. I have no sympathy for Smith. Sounds like a typical redneck sports-mad white-trash, who got what he deserved. Shame that the young brother now has to serve jail time though.
  22. A step in the right direction, or just pure hypocrisy? Mann says no to caste census Sarbjit Dhaliwal Tribune News Service Jalandhar, May 16 Raising some fundamental questions against the proposed caste census in the country, SAD (A) president Simranjit Singh Mann said today that the SGPC and other Sikh religious organisations should take a firm stand against such census because it was against the basic tenants of the Sikhism. He said Guru Nanak Dev had founded Sikhism to build a casteless society. The proposal was unconstitutional and a retrograde step, he added. He said the proposed census would put Sikhs in a situation, which was against the basic philosophy of their religion. Giving instance, he said when an enumerator on the census duty would approach a Sikh family, he or she would ask about the caste of the family to fill the census form. However, as there was no place of caste in Sikhism, the family would be in a difficult situation to answer the question. “ If the family will not answer the question, it may not be counted,” he said. Asked what would be his stand when enumerators would come to his house, Mann said that he would say no to fill the caste column. He said a person, who believed in the caste system and mentioned his caste, could not be counted among the Sikhs. Mann said the caste census could also cast its shadow on the SGPC elections because only Sikhs could vote in it. “If one person mentions his caste to a census enumerator and on the other, he is on the voter list of the SGPC, his right to vote could be challenged because of his belief in the casteism,” said Mann. “With this, the identity of settlements of minorities and various castes will be available on record and such settlements can become easy target during hostile situations. In Gujarat, minority community settlements were attacked leading to the killing of hundreds of people a few years ago,” he added.
