Meditation - My Experiance, Am I Allowed To Share?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to play devils advocate on this one and may be very wrong as it is just my personal opinion based on my understanding so far.

I think these types of sayings are generally given to encourage people to only think positive thoughts and stop being negative. If there are such clever people who are able to make such definitive statements and have such divine knowledge that this happens. Then surely all they would have to do is for the whole 24 hours keep one persistent thought for what ever they desired, whether this be maya, spiritual or salvation based.

I recently heard a more believable explanation which is due to the power of pure focused mind. Why is it for an average person do the thoughts they have not always come true? Reason given was that our minds are weak due to large number of thoughts a person takes and there is also a lack of purity and focus in these thoughts. When a person walking on the spiritual path practices abhyaas and learns to slowly still the mind over a period of time then the mind's power increases. In this time the person also learns to build more one pointed focus and attention with the power of thought and mind. After some time it is like using a bow and arrow where by that person fires only one arrow with a clean, focused, pure mind rather than firing a million weak unfocused shots. When this happens it is said it will surely hit the target. The mind is a very powerful tool and is said to be jyot saroop and drop from the Ocean. It came from the ocean of Waheguru so also carries some of the same abilities. It however is drowning in maya so loses its power.

It is further said that as one progresses towards this purity and state of mind, the original desire will surely diminish and the peace one feels at that stage supersedes all other desire and wants. When the mind reaches that pure avasta asking for anything other than for it to remain is like throwing mud upon oneself so that they may drown again just after they have cleaned themselves and reached that blissful state.

its a tough one, trying to understand this intellectually...

the mind i believe really has unlimited capabilities...but when its being tormented by a zillion thoughts it is not in a pure enough state to hear and see the 'sign's of Wahegurus existence...

just like when we are busy during the day, thinking about work, worries etc....we don;t really feel our own existence...then when we start to meditate or sit quietly...boom...we can hear our hearts beat...our pulse..some ringing in the ear...we're now aware of so much of ourselves in that state...and through a quiet focussed mind...we can see and hear the existence of waheguru...

personally i think the Mind is not the drop from the ocean...when we hear Guru Ji, taking to His mind saying "oh my mind," do this and do that...something beyond the level of the mind is referencing the mind....which is the drop from the ocean...

and from reading accounts from saints and Guru Ji...it is at this stage we realise the drop isn't really the drop...and there is only the ocean...only waheguru..

ipersonally i think the Mind is not the drop from the ocean...when we hear Guru Ji, taking to His mind saying "oh my mind," do this and do that...something beyond the level of the mind is referencing the mind....which is the drop from the ocean...

Quite simply...we have Mind, body and Soul.

Soul is the atma,----drop in ocean-->drop of atma in paramatma

Mind is jyot saroop...OR it came from the same paramatma origin, but now in Maya it thinks that it is the master and the one running the show !

When I say ""running the show"..............i'm referring to Body, remember we are Mind, Body and Soul.. ..And the Mind has become enveloped in the matrix illusion and thinks that it controls both the body and the soul.. ...It actually acts like it is the master of the atma,, and this is the same atma from which it was formed..(the jyot saroop)

Adding to this,, I've just realized that quite simply... this is how us descriptions of Man-mat(Mind's wisdom) and Gur-mat(atma's wisdom)  are coined.

Thus, when we let the MIND be the master over the Atma.-->then we are in MAN-MAT.

But if we let ATMA be the master of Mind, then we in GUR-MAT

So, what's the secret of getting the Atma/soul to show it's true self and be mastering the Mind ??..............in more simple words, by stilling that racing hyperactive mind.

Am just reading a book and came to an interesting point. thought I'd share.

There was a paragraph which explained that the mind was in the habit of always having a thought in it. All we had to do is to think of only one thought, and then allow ourselves to forget that one thought. I do not know the name of the book or the name of the author.

That evening I sat quietly and tried to imagine what “one thought” I would think of. Lacking guidance or any other suggestion, I thought of an internal image of a number “1,” like a big candle that goes on a birthday cake. I imagined this in my field of inner vision, only that number “1.” After a while there was a tingling in my fingers and toes. For a while I was able to ignore this and be only aware of the “1.” But, then, somewhere along the way I became aware of this tingling and the fact that I was aware of it; immediately the whole practice stopped. The tingling was gone, along with the awareness of the “1.”

The next night I went home from work and ran the same experiment again. The tingling returned, and this time started moving up my arms and legs. For a while I naturally ignored this, and remained only aware of the “1.” As happened the night before, once I became fully aware of this, the whole thing went away, both the tingling and the “1,” and I was just sitting there, aware of my external surroundings again.

A third night came and the same thing happened again. This time the tingling rose up my arms to my shoulders, and up my legs to around my lower abdomen. I noticed that the distance from the feet to the abdomen was a little further than up the hands to the shoulders, but that the movement took the same amount of time, not knowing if that was significant. As I once again lost awareness of all of this, I wondered where this was going. It seemed to be moving upward and I wondered what would happen if it entered into my head.

On the fourth or fifth night of these experiments the tingling moved all the way up my arms and legs, to the neck, and into the head. There was a flash of sorts and the whole thing disappeared, both the tingling and the “1.” I was not conscious in the waking state sense for four hours or more. I did not know where I went, if “went” was even the right word. I did not understand what had happened, and it was nearly twenty years later before I started to learn about these states of consciousness. I was left with a sense of fear and backed off for a considerable length of time. I meditated from time to time, but did not have this kind of experience again. Years later, my impression was that this was a gift of the tradition in the sense that, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” My impression of this is that when we are hungry, very hungry, and sincere, help will come in one form or another, even if it is in the form of guiding one to the library.

During the practice, the mantra would sometimes move as slow as wading through an ocean of thick honey. At other times, the mantra would move much faster than my mind was able to speak it. It would sometimes turn into a single burst or pulse, yet, somehow the whole mantra and all of its syllables was still there. It was an incredible education into the nature of consciousness. I came to realize that life was easy doing this practice, as it left room for nothing else; there was no time to get in trouble.

Dhan Guru Maharaj!!

I experienced something so thought to write here. But Dhan Guru sahib's kautak ,that SaT veer Ji,already described similiar case with my experience.I think I can write here as No one knows me personally or who I am.So Hope it will not affect me.

Few days back,I got chance to go to a Gurmat divan after very very very long time.Few months Prior to that day,I had a dream where I saw an illuminated parkash of Guru Granth sahib ji in a very big diwan and there was a picture of Guru Nanak Dev Ji maharaj nearby Guru sahib's parakash. It was similar one as there is at Nanaksar. And With Guru sahib's blessings I got a chance to go to a Gurmat Divan.

That night when I was at samagam, when Kirtan was being sung,I felt a unique energy in my body.It was like I wanted to close my eyes forever. Some thing was directing me to keep my eyes closed. Then I felt as my forehead was shivering.I dont know the exact word to call this shivering. My forehead, eyes and area between eye brows started shrinking. It was like a contraction.A very intense force was doing so.It was like my forehead was going to contract. That contraction was creating a unique movement .Then That contraction increased and started to flow in my entire body.It came downwards and I could feel it upto my arms.I felt Simran started happening of its own.I was doing simran of WAH  HE GURU quite well of my own.MY body was so different. It was like something moved thru my nerves, even thru each cell of neves. It was a very blissful thing. But I was aware of everything.I didnt lose my consciousness.I was also enjoying tunes of kirtan at the same time. But was also enjoying that waheguru recitation.I was saying in mInd yes! Yes!! Go further! Go further! But when I felt it upto my arms,it stopped. After that it didnt progress. But I did nt open my eyes. But contractions were still there but very weak then.I prayed to Guru Sahib to make that happen, but thoughts in my mind increased than earlier and Then I just failed! After that I again felt little contractions but nothing beyond that.Though that happened for very very few minutes, but that feeling was very pleasurable. It's like yes !! This is it!

From that day,I start feeling weak contractions on closing eyes, but nothing beyond that due to lack of mediation.due to time managements and wrong thoughts of mind.

So Now I realise why Guru sahib Instruct us to do more amd more Jaap as possible. If I had done enough Jaap or mediation then probably different thoughts were not there and I could progress further...And I have not taken Amrit yet, thats why I think I can NOT make any progress. So Now Need for Amrit has increased even than earlier!!!

  • 2 months later...

A few months ago I was told after a routine eye test that my peripheral vision is not very good and I had black spots where I wasn't seeing. Normally this is a indicator of glaucoma but a ophthalmologist after further investigations told me that I did not have that. Being referred to further specialists to try and ascertain the underlying cause.

I then recently stumbled across a meditation technique called "Tratak" which I had not really paid much attention to in the past. It claims to be an excellent meditation aid in helping still and focus the mind but also claims to heal eye conditions. The technique involves looking straight ahead at single point e.g a dot or flame with open eyes without blinking until such a time the eyes begin to tear, at which time one should close the eyes for relief for a while. Have been playing around with this technique and found it very effective in helping still the mind. During simran I have trouble stilling the movement of the eyes as there is no focal point and looking upwards or downwards or dhyan behind the eyes puts a strain on the eyes which feels uncomfortable. After practicing tratak only a few times it now feels much more easier to gently gaze straight ahead with eyes closed without unnecessary movement. On some occasions it even induces the onset of the high pitch whistle sound in the ears.

Ya, Trataka is one of the hatha yoga techniques. A damn good one.

"Trataka eradicates all eye diseases, fatigue and sloth and closes the doorway creating these problems. It should be carefully kept secret like a golden casket"

Quote

Trataka benefits not only the eyes, but a whole range of physiological and mental functions. It is therapeutic in depression, insomnia, allergy, anxiety, postural problems, poor concentration and memory. Its most important effect is on ajna chakra and the brain. The Gherand Samhita mentions that it promotes clairvoyance or perception of subtle manifestations.

Above passage is taken from a book called Hatha yoga pradipika.

Gurmukh Pyareyo, how long does one have to practice this technique, before any tangible results are observed? Please advise.

Thanks a lot.

This is the exercise you have to hold on for rest of your life. They say observable results appear with regular practice in a month or so. You try and tell us your findings. :)

Sat veer,

Next time if you plan to do tratak, try this experiment. Do tratak on the padam of Guru Nanaks feet, use the pic from Nanaksar.

And during your normal activities, imagine Guru Nanak sitting in your forehead.

You will be pleasantly surprised. :)

I appreciate your suggestion, but I'm not doing any kind of Tratak using inner visualisation techniques. what I cited earlier is basically some of the techniques associated with Trataka. I am aware numerous mahapursh indirectly give this underlying method which include visualising ik onkar, Guru Nanak Dev ji's padam  etc. Unfortunately I am reluctant to start inner visualisations of any kind and only have been advised at this stage to only focus on the sound of the Gurmantar. That alone at times can be hard enough to do when also being challenged in life from various situations. I'm not even limiting myself to only looking at one shape or definitely not a flame because I don't want to embed any pictures in my head. I just use a very loose form of Trataka to occasionally practise focusing on any one small thing in my line of sight and keeping concentration locked on it without thinking anything. Eyes have a habit of constantly looking for stimulation and moving from one thing to another. Just seeing if this technique will help me control my eyes better. If I start using visual aids, the I feel my attention will be split between totally focusing on the sound and trying the generate and keep an image in my minds eye. The whole purpose of using a mantra is to quieten the mind. If we at the same time try and visualise something are we indirectly not self defeating the primary objective?

I recall Sant Waryam Singh ji saying in Discourses of the Beyond that Sant Isher Singh ji gave the instruction of focusing on the tip of the nose as the very last step. That was after one has spent a large amount of time listening to anhad sounds at various points in the head. Focusing on the tip of the nose is another form of Trataka where one is using that point as a focal point for the eyes.

I have not completed reading this whole post yet, I think I just reached page 15 and would like to say I am so excited to start Naam simran, Sat1176. Bhai sahib ji, I am so grateful for you to post your experiences. i am a beginner and new to my roots but I have love which only emerged waheguru ji di kirpa.

I will start reading Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj too, you just inspired me and also other Gursikhs posting on this thread too. Hopefully, I will be able to reach at least 10% of what you are all at.

Thank you for creating this discussion. It's amazing.

I pray that veer Ji you come in contact with a "complete being" pooran mahapurakh who can clear all your doubts. Because even doubts are a hindrance to spirituality. Now you have a duality in your mind , which method is correct or what is happening.  I myself do not know anything but I would say stick to your original method of meditation and also keep praying to Guru ji to clear your doubts. He will surely do it in one way or another.
