Who Are Harnakash, Prahlaad And Namdeo In Sampooran Rehras?

Recommended Posts

Right in the beginning of sampooran rehraas the above are referred to as being saved. Who are they and how do they fit into Sikhi?

I had a quick look and it seems Prahlaad was a famous devotee of Vishnu.

Anyone have knowledge of this they could share?

Bhagat Prahlad and Bhagat Namdev are used as examples of Bhagats whose honour Parmatama saved in the face of evil. Both Bhagats realized God when they were children, Bhagat Prahlad at age 5 or so, and Bhagat Namdev at 8 or so. The example of these Bhagats is used many times throughout Gurbani, just type their names into a Gurbani search engine and read.

Bhagat Namdev Ji's names comes in various forms, such as Namdeo, Nama, Namey, and Namdev.

Bhagat Prahlad is also directly referred with Sant prefix in Gurbani, a Pangti many times used to prove Guruji used Sant sahabd for a single person.

Another well known Pangti from Gurbani instructs us to "Repeat the Name of the Lord in the way Bhagat Dhru and Prahlad repeated it".

Interesting enough Gurbani has labeled many well known personalities from previous yugs as Gurmukhs, notably Ram Chandar Ji, Bhabhikhan (Ravan's brother), and even some of the Sidhs Guru Nanak Dev Ji had Sidh Gosht with.

I think from sargun-relative realities-historical perspective, there is definitely devotional aspect in above story thats how it fits into sikhi- where parhlad was devotee of maha Vishnu(their equivalent to vahiguru) personified and after bhagat full faith in vahiguru that vahiguru will save his honor from his evil father harnkasah- vahiguru descended his attributes into narsingha which destroyed harnakash.

This very much is in align with sargun- bhagti devotional aspect in gurmat and also gurmat take on avtarvaad and tuk from sri dasam granth sahib:

Jab Jab Hot Arsat Apara Tab Tab Deh Dharat Avtara (Bachitar Natak)

But there is another angle/interpretation to this story which i recently picked up from facebook, its antriv arth (deep spiritual interpretation of above gurbani quote in rehras sahib. Both sargun and nirgun meanings of gurbani is quite acceptable in gurmat based on aspirant spiritual development stage.

Please see below..i don't agree with his hindu phobic reaction but other than that his interpretation seems pretty acceptable with one minor issue:

Quote

Guru Gobind Singh changed whole definations of Hindu Granths according to Gurmat so all meanings of Gurmat. One thing is cleared that how Hari saved prahlaad, it's with Gurmat. A Brahmgyani named narsingh came and had gyan charcha with Hrinakashyap and HrinyaKashyap lost in that Battle or Gyan Charcha. There is no Mention of Holika, there's no mention of Brahma giving boon to Hrinyakashyap. It's all Gurmat katha.

Antriv arth (deep spiritual interpretation) of gurbani tuk is quite acceptable in gurbani because thats how one can relate to it on deeper spiritual individualistic level. The problem however with above interpretation- where would inner parhlad would fit into this? So internal narsingh being our intuitive cognitive pure perception-bibek-gyan, harnakash mean- conditioned egoic mind with five vices, parhlad meaning our unconditioned surat(consciousness) praying to save him with his clean heart- mind and awakened love combined ?

Is that it?

Love to get sangat input on this very interesting topic.

Many mythological tales are mentioned in gurbani, but the gurmat wasn't always interpreted or portrayed by brahmin masses...Instead people found it easier to understand deities....and that's the way it went!

Anyway, my take on both Prahlaad and Naamdayv(elephant story)....is about 'Naam' and 'shabad'

Prahlaad, at that young age of 5, realized to jap naam(hari)....he had awakened to the One formless -nirgun lord..If I remember correctly, his father demands to know where is this god of yours? ..and Prahlaad replies he is everywhere and in everything.

Naamdayv also japped naam of hari and, and found the lord's mansion within himself.

Gurmat messages of non-dual, formless, Truth....are there, but another important point from both of these...is that when one begins the journey of bhagti within...then they will get naam, they will get shabad,...they will overcome dualistic powers and they will begin to see the advait Waheguru within everything and everyone.......they,themselves will virtuallybe merging into the reality of Ek onkar.

However, gurbani tells us and warns us that those bhagats that take the path have to prove their devotion. They get naam, they get darshan/prakash, they get to experience the expanse of Gobind.....but they will still face obstacles...still face the tests.....every kind of brick wall can be put up in front of them and even the dead end walls of death come at the very end.. just as Prahlaad and Naamdayv encountered.

Waheguru wants to see if they continue to worship the same formless even if they can face the ultimate challenge of death...to see if they still NEVER demand that some thing saves them, but continue to worship the nirgun Truth..........AND that's when it happens.....Waheguru takes Sargun form and saves his devotee in front of everyone!

He blesses and saves the one who can prove their love with the ultimate prices.
