LUDHIANA: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh today invited the Maruti Udyog Limited (MUL) to expand into Punjab. He criticised the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for failing to take initiative in the matter as Punjab could offer a good environment to the MUL.

Talking to reporters outside the District Court Complex here today, Capt Amarinder had a dig a Mr Badal over his urging Anna Hazare to launch a movement against political defections. “It is ridiculous on part of Mr Badal to seek remedy to all his ills, including the defection of his nephew Manpreet Badal, from Mr Hazare”, Capt Amarinder observed, while remarking, “it only betrays his frustration”.

Referring to the MUL proposal about expansion, the PCC President said, the chairman had ruled out moving out of Haryana but had said the company was planning to expand. “They are welcome to Punjab as it offers best environment besides we have lot of ancillary units here which can be of immense support to MUL”, he said, while pointing out, already a lot of industrial units are supplying so many spare parts to MUL and once they come to Punjab their job will become easier.

The former Chief Minister said, ideally it should have been the Chief Minister Mr Badal who should have taken the initiative and invited the MUL to come to Punjab. “But given the fact that Mr Badal has no such futuristic vision as he remains busy and preoccupied with his sangat darshan programmes we don’t expect him to do that”, he remarked while adding, it is just a matter of three months more and Congress government will try to motivate them (the MUL) to come to Punjab.

Asked about his reaction to Mr Badal urging Anna Hazare to launch a movement against defections, the former Capt Amarinder said, “these are the signs of extreme frustration and desperation as Mr Badal must have Manpreet (Badal) in mind to be targeted by Hazare”. He observed, Anna is a well meaning person who picked up the right issue which appealed to people and he should not get misled and trapped into controversies by people like Mr Badal.

He said, Anna was welcome to Punjab and he was sure that he will verify the credentials of people he will come to support if he really had any intention to come to Punjab and the Akalis who are known to by unscrupulously corrupt having broken all the records in history.

About the government proposal to provide alternate land to Gobindpura farmers, the PCC President said, he would welcome it if the farmers are convinced. But, he added, “I do not trust Mr Badal about anything as he always bides time as he did earlier by deceiving farmers to postpone their strike only to back out later”.

Prominent among those present on the occasion included the PCC vice president Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, general secretary Arvind Khanna, District Congress Committee Ludhiana (urban) president Pawan Dewan, MLA Jassi Khangura, OSDs Major Amardeep, Karanpal Sekhon and others.
