I heard theres a movie being made called "Nanak Shah Fakir"

Any details will be appreciated. What are your views on this?

I believe this movie should not be made as it will inevitably encounter shortcomings in trying to portray GuruJi. I think it will also result in imposing beliefs and interpretations on religious issues and social issues.

That's true of any media though. Books, paintings, writings, even face to face contact.

If the movie is like Dhanna Jatt or Hari Darshan (Bhagat Prahlad) I think it will be worth watching.

If it's a low budget movie like the one on Sant Kabir then I hope they never make it lol.

Media is a powerful medium. It can change the perception of entire kaums, if done properly. The Christ movie done by Mel Gibson (Last Temptation of Christ) was so powerful and had my family, myself on the edge of our seats. I did indeed google Jesus Christ and tried to learn everything about him, watching documentaries and found some new respect and honour for him.

I thought there was an embargo on portraying Baba Nanak in film?

I'm not comfortable with the idea myself; too big a pair of shoes for any actor to walk in.

If it's made in India it will probably be really cheesy with lousy acting too....

God forbid that they start breaking out in Bollywood style songs/dance!

Nanak Shah Fakir is the new benchmark for films on Sikh content/history. It could be a catalyst for spreading the universal message of our beloved 1st Guru to the world. The cinematography and attention to detail is quite remarkable. Thank you to Harninder Singh for producing it and to Sikh lens and SIFFT for bringing it to Toronto. Premier will most likely be in 2015, and it could be in Toronto!!

I also have seen favourable reviews and a glimpse of some film and it looks amazing but at the same time i am strictly against it because of the many implications it will have. I was happy before that the Gurus were safe from subjectivity in media but I guess this benchmark now marks the era where Sikhs are brought into the mainstream and controlled just like everyone else. They start with Sikh models and now this movie... Sikhs were one of the few people in this world who were able to stand outside the hegemonic structure culturally to quite an extent. I guess its because many Sikhs seek acceptance by the other in capitalist mainstream society and want to be the "climbers" of Fanon while keeping an external appearance. These climbers have already done so much damage. No one should be allowed to play the role of Maharaj. Media is very selective and only time will tell how this film will affect sikh youth in the world. A narrative will be imposed on viewers now and it will probably be based on lies or certain interpretations of bani and sakhiyaan. Lets see what God has planned.
