What is the purpose and meaning behind the shastarnaam mala puran? This shabad makes me think there are some deep meanings in it since it adresses the 52 poets of the Guru assembly directly.

Now Begins the description of the names of the Gun

DOHRA

Uttering the word "Vaahini" and then adding "Ripu Ari" at the end, the names of the Gun are formed, which O poets You may comprehend.

I personally feel the idea was to feel dedicated to their weapons and to see the Bhagouti Shakti purely in the form of the Sword. Remember, Maharaj created Kshatriyas out of laymen who had never fought. The Rajputs have worshipped Bhagouti in the form of Shastars since ages however when one does paath of Shastar Naam Maala , he/she does the bhagti of the Shastars . The pyaar for the Shastars increases.

Aah interesting! Maybe each of these "take this Word and add to that Word" makes up some attributes of the shastars.

We should do another one of these vichaar series - as we are doing on Charitro Pakhyan - just with the Shastarnaam mala puran and go through each weapon

This bit is really insightful. It shows how the gun was used and considered superior to other weapons.

We can see it was called the 'enemy' (ਰਿਪ and ਸਤ੍ਰੁ) as well as the 'ender' (ਅੰਤਕ) of various things including weapons (bows, chakar, swords), animals used in war (elephants, horses) as well as abstract nouns like 'pride' (ਅਭਿਮਾਨ; ਸਮਯ is the Sanskrit for pride), 'kings' (ਨ੍ਰਿਪ, ਭੂਪ),  'wealth' (ਧਨੁ), 'lustre' and 'praise' are also ground to a halt by this weapon (ਪ੍ਰਭਾ andਸੋਭਾ). It gets even deeper than that with other words.

Very, very interesting insights into the thinking of the author.

First say 'the Army of the Kings' [Jagat-isa-ni], then attach the word 'the Churner [Mathni].

Understand all the names of the Gun, don't doubt this even in the slightest.

- Dasam Guru Granth Sahib, Shastarnamala

Here Guru Gobind Singh names the Gun as the 'King-Army Churner', analogizing the long wood shape of a churner [madani] to the long barrel of a gun - both churning, taking two substances and extracting their essence. The Churner extracts butter from milk, and a Gun extracts blood from the King's Army.

(Army of)

Churner
