@Trimandeep Singh

Duties of a Singh, as mentioned in the Naveen Panth Prakash.

Quote

In the year 1757 Bikrami [1700 CE], the Guru [destroyed] the Masands. After that the Singhs would serve in all duties, every day they would perform these in accordance with the Guru's command.

[Consuming] poppy plants, cannabis, opium, and alcohol, they would decapitate [jhatka] goats, and eat kebabs. Everyday they would hunt endlessly, killing leopards, deer and elk.

When twenty to fifty Singhs would meet together, they would roam around looting various towns. They would go great distances, into the heartland of the Turks, raiding them fearlessly.

During the encirclement of Anandpur Sahib when supplies were running low, Guru Gobind Singh sent a letter to the Raja of Nahan, Mediniprakash, requesting supplies of opium be sent for the troops.

Giani Gian Singh, in his Naveen Panth Prakash [1880], describes the celebrations following a military campaign victory by Baghel Singh's troops, the Karora Misal, and the Raja of Patiala, Amar Singh

The Raja [Amar Singh] pleased the entire army by making a sweet Cannabis Sacrament [Bhang Ki Degh] in milk

Drinking this cannabis the Nihang Bhujangis were greatly pleased with the Raja

Also great amounts of Karah Prashaad were made and freely distributed to the Panth [army of Karora Singhia Misal]

In this way great amounts of Karah Prashaad and Bhang Ki Degh [Cannabis Sacrament] was distributed to the Panth and the Raja became greatly loved by the Singhs

After leaving Chamkaur Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh was separated from the Singhs, and had sustained injuries to his feet. Maan Singh, Daya Singh, and Dharam Singh found Guru Gobind Singh and then they proceeded to Gulaba Masand's house where this dialogue takes place.

From the auspicious mouth of the Guru, he said to those around him, "Go bring large amounts of Cannabis and black pepper

I have gone a long time without any intoxicants, this beverage brings great happiness to my mind" Gulaba the Masand heard these words and got ready to leave, he went to the market to purchase these items.

When the Guru was seated in this orchard, the Masand went quickly to the city to complete his task. Guru Gobind Singh had taken the milk of the Ak plant [for medication, commonly called the 'Apple of Sodom'] but it had caused dryness [on his feet]. He desired an intoxicant to drink [which would remove this pain].

In understanding that in his company there were three Singhs, he asked them, "does anyone have Cannabis close at hand?" Maan Singh had small amounts [of cannabis] wrapped up, and hearing this the Guru told him to unwrap it.

[Maan Singh] had prepared the small amounts of cannabis and gave it to Guru Gobind Singh, the drink was extremely strong and the Guru drinking it was extremely pleased and gave a blessing to Maan Singh - "Within the Khalsa there will be Panth that belongs to you.

It will be beautifully adorned in your attire and demeanor - countless in number they will be called Akali Nihangs." In this way about half an hour passed, but their desire for more intoxicants remained.

Supporting nasha which is a bajjar kurehat

Consumption of Tobacco (in any form) is a Bajjar Kurehat.

Consumption of Alcohol is also a Kurehat.

In general, Gurbani discourages the consumption of all intoxicants.

Intoxicants were primarily used as pain killers by Singhs in the past.

So, after battle when you have tens or hundreds of survivors, or soon to die, dismembered, disembowled, eyeball hanging out Soormas, the ever loving, ultimately compassionate Father of them all prescribed what to ease their agony exactly?

If someone pulled you out a pile of shit and blood and dead bodies, and took you to the side and cut your leg off, your supposed aversion to Afeem might dissipate friend.

Not everybody in a Fauj is Baba Deep Singh Shaheed.

Only some Soorma are going to have high enough Avastha to Naam Jaap through amputation and surgery etc.

There are allied forces, non Sikhs, helping in some of these battles. You think the Guru had no Afeem for them as part of the supply chain for war?

When you go to war, your mobility, food, water, weapons all have to be seen to. You bring supplies for the dead, for the wish they were dead. When you go to war the necessary supplies make it obvious how brutal, disgusting, degrading, disfiguring, crippling and lethal what you are about to do is.

You're a little red in the face Veer Ji over something that is honestly your own naivity.

Just because Guru Granth Sahib Ji doesn't cover field medicine methods of the Faujs doesn't mean they didn't have to practice medicine and surgery bro. That kind of info, or historical accounts would be covered elsewhere....like probably where @paapiman is quoting from.

Agreed. But what about the use of psychotropic substances for non nasha purposes? Medicinal uses.

Krodh n rosh are two different aspects.. If I don't get in krodh when a paapiman is writing crap about My Guru Sahib I am better not alive

@dalsingh101 veerji - he's writing caanbis as refreshing drink etc for Guru Sahib , also mentioning that Guru Hargobind Sahib used to consume it. - As a Medicine I understand is a different aspect

@GurjantGnostic so you agree that Real sikhs like Baba Deep Singh ji has the Jog abilities mentioned in Guru Granth Sahib ji to keep himself intoxicated in the love of Guru and don't need any outside Nasha. So read the fake codes above where he's defaming Gurus themselves taking this crap... My larai is not about medicine. You guys didn't read his quotes then... N Btw

Guru Granth Sahib covers everything - our nervous system, Human brain and what not? Study about today's science on human brain and you will get to know that an average human being like me and you doesn't use even 10%of our brains. Our brains have a lot of power. Guru k sikhs and Guru ji himself developed this power by bhakti, where they can use their nerves to heal, cut off from pain etc

It's not like he wrote them. To be honest, I'm just glad to have access to puratan stuff to read out of interest. I don't agree with everything within. I think suppressing or hiding texts is a very bad thing.

The earliest account I have read referencing afeem use is in Sri Gursobha by Sainapati, who is supposed to be a contemporary to dasmesh pita. They write in a way that suggests Singhs may have used some for long horse journeys.  Now most people accept Gursobha as the work of a Darbaari Kavi - so why would he lie? Or maybe the use in that kind of way was no big deal then?

Hazur Sahib Sikhs claim they have a box that Guru ji used to carry afeem. That doesn't mean Guru ji used it themselves, they might of had it for injured fighters?

Singhs (especially Akalis) using bhang has loads of early references both internal (as in Bhangu's Panth Prakash) and external in umpteen early european accounts.  Cannabis has loads of medicinal uses that the west are only grasping now - I think our ancestors understood the use of the stuff in the past (liek using leaf and not bud).

I just think that Panjabi culture used these things in various ways outside of getting off your head.

And I understand that we have a serious chittah problem in Panjab, but I think those fuddhus would do it regardless of what any old granth says.

Most Sikhs can't do this. I read about Sukha Singh who later slew Massa Ranghar. In one battle he broke his leg, he fought through the battle by tying his broken leg to the saddle of his horse or something similar, but later had to go to a hakim to get his leg set properly. Plus he was known to take sukha according to Bhangu (might be where he got his name from maybe?)
