Cannabis compounds can stop the virus that causes COVID-19 from entering human cells by binding to the spike protein and blocking it from infecting people, study finds

• The compounds are found in hemp and can be taken orally or combine with the coronavirus vaccine
• The compounds, a pair of cannabinoid acids, bind to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein
• This blocks the virus from infecting human cells, thus stopping COVID-19 

Specific cannabis compounds can prevent the virus that causes COVID-19 from entering human cells.

Researchers at Oregon State University identified a pair of cannabinoid acids that bind to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, blocking a critical step in the process the virus uses to infect people.

The team found the cannabis compounds, which can be taken orally and are abundantly found in hemp, blocked the alpha and beta variants from infecting the human cells - but the team notes those are the only two variants studied in this research.

This means, according to the team, the compounds could prove successfully in blocking other coronavirus strains.

 

Richard van Breemen, a researcher with Oregon State's Global Hemp Innovation Center and study lead, said in a statement: 'These cannabinoid acids are abundant in hemp and in many hemp extracts.

'They are not controlled substances like THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and have a good safety profile in humans.

'And our research showed the hemp compounds were equally effective against variants of SARS-CoV-2, including variant B.1.1.7, which was first detected in the United Kingdom, and variant B.1.351, first detected in South Africa.' 

The specific compounds are cannabigerolic acid, or CBGA, and cannabidiolic acid, CBDA, and the spike protein is the same drug target used in COVID-19 vaccines and antibody therapy. 

The team found the cannabis compounds, which can be taken orally and are abundantly found in hemp, blocked the alpha and beta variants from infecting the human cells - but the team notes those are the only two variants studied in this research

 

SARS-CoV-2, which is characterized by crown-like protrusions on its outer surface, features RNA strands that encode its four main structural proteins – spike, envelope, membrane and nucleocapsid – as well as 16 nonstructural proteins and several 'accessory' proteins, van Breemen said.

'Any part of the infection and replication cycle is a potential target for antiviral intervention, and the connection of the spike protein's receptor binding domain to the human cell surface receptor ACE2 is a critical step in that cycle,' he said. 

'That means cell entry inhibitors, like the acids from hemp, could be used to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and also to shorten infections by preventing virus particles from infecting human cells. 

'They bind to the spike proteins so those proteins can't bind to the ACE2 enzyme, which is abundant on the outer membrane of endothelial cells in the lungs and other organs.'

And using compounds to block virus-receptor interaction is nothing new: it has been used to treat HIV-1 and hepatitis.

'One of the primary concerns in the pandemic is the spread of variants, of which there are many, and B.1.1.7 and B.1.351 are among the most widespread and concerning,' said van Breeman.

'These variants are well known for evading antibodies against early lineage SARS-CoV-2, which is obviously concerning given that current vaccination strategies rely on the early lineage spike protein as an antigen. 

'Our data show CBDA and CBGA are effective against the two variants we looked at, and we hope that trend will extend to other existing and future variants.'

'By 2010, the number of drug offenders sent to criminal courts had halved. 

'Less law enforcement work will have helped to pay for better treatments. Might this not be worth a try?'

 

He added:  'Recreational drug use is no longer unmentionable but in most governments the issue of drug addiction remains unresolvable. 

'Ministers face conflicting advice, bureaucratic inertia and a fear of doing the wrong thing. Amidst low public expectations of any change, it is safer to try more of the same. 

'Labour fear being depicted as ''soft'' if they deviate from established policies. Lib Dems have always differed but been seen as sandal-wearing potheads as a result. 

'Many Tories are reluctant, as I was two decades ago, to abandon a ''tough'' law and order approach.'

Last week official figures showed deaths from MDMA, cocaine and sleeping pills such as Xanax have spiralled up to 10-fold in a decade.

Office for National Statistics data showed drug fatalities had surged to their highest level since 1993, with 4,561 deaths in England and Wales registered last year

It was the ninth successive year that drug fatalities have risen.

Meanwhile Nicola Sturgeon was accused of presiding over 'national shame' as Scotland's drugs deaths hit a new record of 1,339.

The grim toll went up 5 per cent last year, the seventh annual rise in a row, as the country continued to have the worst fatality rate in Europe. 

MDMA, also known as ecstasy, was behind 10 times more deaths in England and Wales than in 2010, and among men fatalities linked to the drug were 13n times higher than 10 years ago.

Cocaine-related fatalities jumped almost five-fold over the same period to 777, with rates among women soaring from just 19 to almost 160.

And deaths involving benzodiazepine — a class of powerful sleeping pills that include Xanax and Valium — rose by almost 60 per cent in ten years.

Experts said today the figures were sad but not surprising, especially for cocaine 'given that [the drug] is so readily available and as easy to order as a Deliveroo'.

They slammed the data as 'tragic and concerning', and called on ministers to urgently dish out extra support to fix the 'public health emergency'.

Many of those who died from taking illegal drugs were born in the 1970s. The victims include members of the so-called 'Trainspotting generation' that live in poorer towns and cities and became addicted to heroin in the 1990s when prices were cheap.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid responded to the figures today saying the Government 'is committed to tackling drug misuse and saving lives'. Ministers are now proposing to make naloxone — a medicine that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose — more widely available.

Naam Gurbani is the highest order of medicine, breathing, moving, having a healthy life. When it comes to things you could eat to help, I'm fully behind it and liked the initial results. I've never had covid as far as I know and I eat cbds. I wouldn't say that's the only reason or something, how could I. But I do eat cbds, and have bever been covid symptomatic. 

Well. Really we've all had every disease for a second before our immune system destroyed it and put it on the watch list.

‘Whole plant’ treatments have not been approved in the UK before, unlike in other countries including Germany, Canada, Israel and Australia. The NHS says there is ‘some evidence medical cannabis can help certain types of pain, though this evidence is not yet strong enough to recommend it for pain relief’.

Tony Samios, from private firm LVL Health, which is running the trial, told The Times the cannabis could be rolled out on the NHS ‘within the next few years’. ‘We’re hoping we will provide the data that Nice and the NHS require to get it prescribed... absolutely millions could benefit,’ he said.

The trial, called Canpain, will run for the next three years and is open to patients aged 18 to 85 who have been diagnosed with non-cancerous chronic pain. It is starting this month with an initial ‘feasibility study’ involving 100 patients to check for safety, with a further 5,000 patients then set to be enrolled in the trial through LVL Health chronic pain clinics.

The cannabis, costing £299 a month per patient, is delivered through tamper-proof cartridges in vaping devices.

Mr Samios said: ‘You have to take it all in one go which takes up to five minutes – it’s not like you can puff on it all day long.’

He added that patients get the effect ‘of inhaling the whole flower, but you’re not actually smoking it and obviously don’t have all the carcinogens’.

The National Institute for Health and Care Research is to oversee the studies looking at the effects of the substance on epilepsy sufferers.

I know at least two people alive today because they gave up reefer madness after getting diagnosed with cancer before cannabis oiling their way out of it.
