Ban cat flaps to save birds: PETA calls for moggies to be kept inside to stop them killing wildlife - and also to protect themselves from being hit by a car or poisoned

  • Peta has issued demand for cats to be kept inside to stop them killing wildlife
  • Has said cats which are allowed out unsupervised also face safety risk
  • Only exception to their confinement is if cats have secure 'catio'- enclosure
  • Vets warned this week that almost half of UK cats were obese and making them housebound would make situation worse

It might put an end to your moggie's nasty habit of leaving dead birds and mice on your doorstep.

But a call for all cats to be kept inside to stop them killing wildlife seems sure to get fur flying among pet lovers.

An animal rights charity has issued the demand – along with a ban on cat flaps – not just because of the threat our feline friends pose to small animals, but also for their own safety.

Peta – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – says cats which are allowed out unsupervised are at risk of being hit by a car or poisoned.

The only exception to their confinement, they say, is if owners have a secure 'catio' – a garden enclosure from which cats cannot escape.

Peta founder Ingrid Newkirk said: 'People wouldn't dream of opening the door and letting a toddler wander into the road.

'Yet every day, cats are run over, poisoned by anti-freeze or die at the hands of teenagers out for a lark – because their guardians do just that.

'If you love your cat, for goodness sake keep them indoors and make your house their home, with views to enjoy and things to play with.' Many cat owners, however, will see such a policy as imprisoning pets which need to roam.

And Dr Lauren Finka, a cat welfare expert from the University of Nottingham, said: 'Cats should definitely not be kept indoors as a blanket policy.

'Most benefit greatly from having the option to roam around. This can be an important way for cats to manage the stress of living in human households.'

A quarter of British cats are believed to live almost exclusively inside. But cat expert Celia Haddon said: 'For cats who have lived outside, keeping them indoor-only is positively cruel.'

This week, vets warned that almost half the cats in Britain were obese, a situation which making them housebound would only make worse.

In 2006, 230,000 cats were run over on UK roads. But of almost 11 million cats in the country, fewer than one in 25 have been involved in a traffic accident by the age of 12, a poll suggests.

And although cats are estimated to catch up to 29 million birds a year, the RSPCA says they mostly take weak ones.

Peta, which had previously suggested that cats and dogs should not be called 'pets', said owners can train cats to go for walks using a harness or lead.

In a new book, 250 Vital Things Your Cat Wants You To Know, Miss Newkirk suggests owners create a stimulating environment, such as shelves indoors for cats to climb on or creating a walled outdoor 'catio'.

But Dr Finka said being restrained and unable to explore may cause cats anxiety.

She advised owners to use pet-friendly garden fencing to keep cats from getting out, and said: 'Peta is focusing on quantity of life over quality of life. Cat ownership is not just about keeping an animal alive, but making sure they have a fulfilling life.'

An autistic man is taking Sainsbury’s to court after the supermarket giant refused access to his assistance cat.

Web designer Ian Fenn, who was diagnosed with autism two years ago, says Chloe the rescue cat sits on his shoulders and stops him from feeling “overwhelmed” and “anxious”.

But the 51-year-old says his confidence was knocked after he was asked to leave a branch of the supermarket in south London in March because of his feline friend.

Mr Fenn, who says Chloe is allowed into other supermarkets such as Tesco, has subsequently tried to convince Sainsbury’s to let him take Chloe into stores.

Sainsbury’s, which welcomes assistance dogs, argues that cats pose a food hygiene risk but has asked its environmental health team to try to find a solution.

Mr Fenn looks set for a court showdown with the supermarket giant which could set a new legal precedent.

The Equality Act 2010 puts a duty on employers to make reasonable adjustments to the workplace or its practices to ensure disabled people are not at a substantial disadvantage.

Mr Fenn, of Tooting, south London, says he has been taking Chloe out with him for about a year.

He has owned her for five years after he adopted her from a cat rescue centre in Canning Town and estimates she is 12 or 13.

But when he visited the store in Clapham Common in March he claims he was approached by staff and thrown out mid-shop.

Your cat knows when you’re talking to it, it’s just ignoring you

Research unpacks a new dimension to the reciprocal relationship between humans and felines

ByJoe Pinkstone,  SCIENCE CORRESPONDENT25 October 2022 • 6:00am

If you think your cat is ignoring you, the chances are it probably is as scientists have proven that the animals do know when their owner is talking to them.

However, while scientists have finally answered the question of whether or not your cat knows when you are calling it, they have not explained the enduring mystery of feline impudence as cats may simply choose to blank their owner.

A study of 16 cats owned by veterinary students in France saw recordings played through a speaker in their home to see their reaction to different voices.

The clips were of the owner talking to the cat and saying its name, the owner talking to another human, a stranger talking to the cat and a stranger talking to another adult person.

Video cameras allowed scientists from the Université Paris Nanterre to see how the behaviour of the cats changed after each piece of audio was played and scientists looked for various telltale signs that the animal’s attention had been grabbed, such as changes to head and ear movement, blinking, tail twitching, walking and purring.

Analysis revealed cats did not respond to strangers or when their owner was talking in their normal voice to other people
