Experimenting with Dhoops

Recommended Posts

I have recently been using dhoops which I got from a local puja shop. I wish I could have access to dhoops made by Nihang Singhs but I dont. I have tried something called Sambhrani dhoop which has a very natural herb like fragrance which doesn’t give me a headache. Very impressive . Also it relaxed my mind , and helped with simran/nitnem and gave me a cozy feeling. The waves of smoke over a ghee jot have such a meditative effect. I have avoided incense sticks all my life, but finally found something that is actually helpful.

Other fragrance I tried was chandan which was like generic smell. Also I tried loban/benzoin resin over charcoal, a bit stronger than sambhrani.

Do you guys have any experience with natural ingredients dhoop and any particular fragrances you liked.

@Lucky veer do you have any experience with dhoops on a spiritual level ?

Most Japanese incense sticks are made with natural ingredients and don't have a bamboo core.  Although they are a little lighter in strength and burn quicker compared to Indian or Tibetan ones. For some recommendations i would suggest visiting the incense subreddit on reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/Incense/

I would have to agree that khulee dhoof (+ using ghee jot with a new batti every time) is the best option when it comes into attracting good energies...

I'm still learning but I would say that chandan (sandalwood) is given more significance in gurbani. There is an avastha during which a fragrance akin to chandan emanates from the abyasee,, therefore, I'd say chandan gurbani references are more than just metaphors and we can go though some if you like.

I've tried different dhoof brands and some are more preferable than others.  Mother india is one that i like but can't always get hold of around here.    Not noticed any direct affect with doing bhagtee, but I usually put one on at the beginning of long session if I feel the air needs it.    I do have a himalyan salt lamp and I firmly believe it has a positive effect in helping sum the pavan.  It may just be psychological, but I seriously feel the pavan get balanced after it's been on for half an hour or so. We have a few in the house and it seems to work in the room i have my deeper and longer sessions in (small bedroom).    In terms of physics, it emits negative ions to counter the excessive +ve ions/free radicals.  Electronics, wifi, EMF.. .etc...all emit too many +ve particles.  and these can affect both our sukham and astool bodies.   I also don't keep phone or wifi in the same room I'm doing abyaas in.

thanks for the info veer ji, i will definitely try himalayan salt lamp, and avoid having phone nearby during abhyas. These are little things that can add up and you dont know unless someone with experience tells you.

I cant wait to smell the real chandan one day haha 😆 hopefully maharaj does kirpa.

Your welcome.  I'm not trying to sell the himalayan lamp idea, but it may be worth a try.  I swear by it and notice the effect but my wife and kids don't seem to notice.  Maybe it's just my mind playing tricks because you can balance the pavan by using mind and dhyian as well.  Go for a medium sized one if planning to sit a couple of metres away, for larger rooms you need the heavy large ones.

Waheguru ji I use a ghee jot and as the Kundalini yoga guys use American white sage , after talking to spirituality high person she said the sage is very good so do that as well. also wanted traditional dhoop as I saw a reicipe for it on YouTube but not sure if all the ingredients are available in the UK. I don’t know if it makes a difference to my trying to stop thoughts while doing my path but I will try anything as I feel like I’m not getting anywhere. I spoke to the person who made the video and he said it’s best not to use this if you are gristi (I think he wanted to say not celibate) , but no other explanation.

See how it goes. Many other benefits as well, I know someone had their psoriasis clear up since they been using this.

I will keep you posted but for now it creates a pleasant glow, it can be dimmed , and sets a pleasant mood. I will have to use it more to see what it offers. Its been only one day.Its a very pleasant addition to the meditation room/ place.  😊
