Gurbani or Naam - Which is more Important?

I have had this question for a long time and I am sure a lot of us have had this question. This happens because we hear different explanations from different people. 

This is how I have come to terms with it and is my understanding. Please let me know if I am wrong. Gurbani gives us instructions and rehit to follow. When we read with pyar it also cleanses our sins. Once our mind is cleansed it will automatically grab Naam or feel more focused in Waheguru Naam.

Gurbani also tells us to jap Naam. So it is also important to do abhyas of Waheguru Mantra. 

Mahapurush prescribe different medications for different patients. Its not the same for all. For some Japji Sahib, Sukhmani Sahib and for some Moolmantra. In my understanding, the more bibek & sooksham the surti is, its easier to grab or listen to Waheguru Mantra. So all of us have to decide where we stand. Baba Nand Singh Ji used to say that moolmantra is foundation, stronger the foundation, stronger the GuruMantra is. so imo both are necessary. 

I used to think that if I do more gurbani or moolmantra , I will miss on Gurumantra. But thats not the case, all Gurbani and Moolmantra cleanse your mind, and make you receive naam Gurmantra. But its also important to do abhyaas of Gurmantra.

There are some who solely focus on Gurmantra alone. I am not sure about that. But do what works for you. I know pretty much all the great mahapurush focused a lot on doing repetitive jaap of Gurbani. there must be a reason behind it.

I would just like to add that all Gurbani is about the praises, about the apaar wadeeayee of Waheguru's real form of Nam.

Now about the question of this thread of if Gurbani or Nam?

It is like as Gurbani is preparing food, and Nam is to eat The Food.

What would happen if we just prepare food but do not eat it?

We would die of hunger.

Which means, we would have lost this priceless human form to reunite our souls with Him, thus stay strongly as prisoners in the wheel of 84.

So Nam is our origin, Nam is our goal, Gurbani is the inspiration or to say like to ignite the true awareness of Nam in us, in order to submit ourselves to His will and by His grace merge in Him.

Anyhow Gurbani is very clear when it says:

EKO NAM HUKAM HAE NANAK SATGUR DHEEA BUJHAAE  JEEO.

Guru Sahiban is saying:

O Nanak, the Satguru has made me understand, that there is one "hukum" for all, and that is Nam (for the purpose of reuniting our souls with Him).

That line brother can be interpreted as the ik shabad it is referring to is the sound of naam, and when you reach the avasta of hearing it all the time you will not enter reincarnation again. There are other pangtis that also state this.

One the arths of Shabad is Braham or Waheguru, according to Mahan Kosh.

Now, devout Sikhs know that Gurbani is Braham Roop or the Roop of Sri Waheguru jee. Therefore, the word "Shabad" in the verse above, can also refer to Gurbani.

Naam is Truth, it Is Gurbani. It’s the same. When you apply Truth (Gurbani) to your life, it’s the same as japping Naam, you live in a higher frequency of Truth. Naam simran is also required, at Amrit vela, ie 12.30am onwards. The Bhagat should go into samadhi and stay grounded in Truth during the day.

I would say both equally important for eg-Gurbani-  Japji sahib(pauri of sunana, manan, nidhashan)-  have sunan(deep listening), manan(acknowledging/following)  and nidhashan (deep contemplation) of mahavaks- supreme statements in gurbani, mahavaks are everywhere in gurbani in form of gurmantar, mool mantar, gurbani, including sukhmani sahib and naam simran is deep contemplation/awareness of vahiguru paratama/atma-presence 

Gurbani  (Sunana/Manan/Nidashan) of mahavaks works as enforcement for spiritual aspirants to do Naam simran in every day until one reaches effortless/ unbroken spontaneous naam liv-unbroken current of Vahiguru/Paratma/ atma/self- self/god realization.

To me, they are both equally important. Gurbani seems to lead to naam simran on Gurmantar. And also you can do simran to Gurbani.

To learn to run, one first has to learn to walk.

In a simliar way, through Gurbani we come to know the value, the supreme importance and mahima of Naam, which is the real, eternal and changeless form of Waheguru Akal Purukh, then only we can move to merge in IT.

 

The following Shabad of Sree Guru Arjun Dev Maharaj is a clear picture of the statement  above.

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Gourree Mehalaa 5 ||

 

ਕਣ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੈਸੇ ਥੋਥਰ ਤੁਖਾ ॥

As the husk is empty without the grain,

No desires are fulfilled. ||3||

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਪਨੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥

O God, grant Your Grace, and give me this gift.
