Quote

[After Guru Hargobind] spoke, Jahangir listening to this bowed his head, upon getting up the Emperor went to his own camp. Satguru [Hargobind] arrived at his own encampment and upon returning He [and the other Sikhs] drank cannabis.

Mounting their horses [Guru Hargobind and his warriors] then went out for a ride. Travelling along the path by the banks of the Yamuna River, watching the water slowly flow and the beautiful greenery around the banks.

Covering a great distance [they stopped] and dismounted their horses, there were many among the group; there was Nanda, the Sangheras were within them, and Jetha, Amia Hehar,

Ninjer and Randhava, Kirpal of Jalu, the resolute Sikhs Langaha and Pirana. They all then bathed their whole body [in the Yamuna River].

Standing at the riverbank looking at the flow of water, the dark coloured waves going by, one Sikh, Pirana, asked the Guru, "Who is this Majnu that everyone knows about?

Who's name is associated with this land where you have placed your camp." Listening to this Sri Satiguru Hargobind replied, "His story originated long ago.

The King of this area [Delhi] had a daughter named Layla, [Manju] had heard that she was extremely beautiful, looking upon her one was imbued with love. He could not get his mind to focus on anything else.

Being in Lahore, Manju contemplate upon Laila, day and night he kept his one pointed focus on her. One day he met a traveler on a camel, who was getting ready to set off for Delhi.

Majnu then began to give the message to the rider, but in saying and saying the message [it was so long] that he continued to follow the path of the rider. He travelled along with the camel, without his sense he ran along side the camel [giving his love message for Layla to the rider].

Following the camel rider [all the way] he arrived in Dehli to see Layla. When meeting Layla one time she took him [by the arm] and said to Majnu, "Now you should stay in this place [that I have taken you] and stand here.

After some time I shall return and meet you, remain here [in the woods] waiting for me". Saying this she left and Majnu remained waiting there, with his attention focused and remembering Layla.

Standing there many years had passed by, he paid no attention to his own body during this time. His whole body dried up like a dry piece of wood, all the while Layla did not remember or think of Majnu.

Through the power of Love he did not lose his life, his mind was extremely focused [upon Layla]. Dried up like a trunk of a tree he remained standing. His love for the sight of Layla was extremely powerful.

A carpenter one day set off to where Majnu was standing, thinking that he was a tree trunk he stuck Majnu with his axe, when the axe hit Majnu he regained his senses and said, "Is that you Layla? You have come to me?"

The carpenter then was shocked and then realized it was Majnu standing here, he then set off to tell the King of this, who then had Layla sent to Majnu.

She went to Majnu and when they saw each other, they were fully imbued in the colour of Love. They directed their minds focus from all directions and placed it upon the contemplation of Parameshvar. 50

Majnu's love directed at Layla was then expanded to the one pointed focus on Prabhu [and thus] Majnu became a fully enlightened saint at this place." In this way Satiguru [Hargobind] spoke of the of the story of Majnu and Layla.

The Sikhs, listening and understanding the story, enjoyed it very much, then where they were gathered [by the river banks] they mounted their horses again, [rode out] to their encampment to rest [after] eating and drinking their dinner.
