The growth of Sikhs in due to a number of reasons. Mainly it is due to the natural growth which is where the population increases because births outnumber deaths. Interestingly enough some European Countries are experiencing a negative growth in population due to deaths outnumbering births. Russia is a classic example where each year the population is falling.

As for Sikhs the only figures that we have is for Sikhs in India. On average Sikhs increase by about 25 % every 10 years. This means that the population of Sikhs in India doubles every 31 years.

The total population based on the last decade of growth will double in 38 years.

Bahai is already 6 million and it is only 100 year old :(

Bahai figures have been heavily overestimated mainly due to the fact that most figures are supplied by the Bahai central assembly. Their estimate of Bahais in India is 2.5 to 3 million. But the official census of India in 1991 only listed less than 6,000 Bahais !!!. The figures for other countries are also overestimated. There aren't more than a 1 million Bahais in the world.

Waheguru ji ka khalsa

Whaeguru ji ki fateh

Sat Sri Akal, Can anyone tell me the accurate Sikh population worldwide?

According to the 1991 census of india there were 16,243,252 Sikhs in India. This figure excludes the Sikhs in Jammu and Kashmir as no census was taken there in 1991. In 1981 the Sikh population of J&K was 133,675. We can do a rough calculation of a 26 % increase from 1981-1991. This makes the Sikh population in J&K about 168,430 in 1991. Therefore the total sikh population in india was 16,411,682 in 1991. Only a few of the countries where the Sikhs reside contain any religious affiliation questions in their censuses. Therefore only a rough estimate can be made of the population of Sikhs outside india. In 1991 there were probably 1.5 million sikhs outside india. The worldwide sikh population was then about 17,911,000. If we then do a similar rough calculation of a 26 % increase from 1991-2001. Then the Sikh population worldwide will be 22,568,719 in 2001. This year it is probably 22,102,000.

2) Some information I do have about the Sikh population is,

Malaysia - 125,000

I think a more accurate figure is about 75,000.

Singapore - 15,000

In 1990 census there were 9,200 sikhs. The true figure would probably be 11,500. Obviously this would increase if there was a lot of migration of Sikhs into singapore between 1990 and 2000.

Canada - 410,000

In 1991 there were 147,000 sikhs in canada. As there has been a lot of migration into canada from the punjab. Then I would assume that this could be a good estimate.

UK - 500,000

This is one of the estimates that are cited in u.k. govt. publications. There was no religious affiliation question in the 1991 census but I believe that there will be one in the 2001 census. According to the 1991 census there were about 848,000 people of indian origin in the u.k. A social services servey estimated that about 51 % of all people of indian origin are Sikhs. Therefore about 432,000 Sikhs were living in the u.k. in 1991. A 26 % increase will make the sikhs about 544,000 in 2001.

USA - 350,000

There have been various estimates about the number of Sikhs in the u.s.a. from about 150,000 to over a million has been cited. This figure seems a good estimate.

Pakistan - 15,000 (Peshwaris Sikh) Punjabi and Sindhi not known

The 1981 census in pakistan counted 2,146 sikhs in pakistan. This was before the large influx of Afghani sikhs into the country in recent years. A census was conducted in 1998 in pakistan but the population by religion figure have not been released. The 1981 figures for peshawar showed only 101 sikhs living there. Sikhs from abroad who have visited the Bhai Joga Singh gurdwara in peshawar during the Yatras estimate the Sikhs to be well over a couple of thousands.

A majority of the non-muslim sindhis are sehajdhari sikhs although they are classified as hindus in the census as they do not keep their hair. Any sikh who goes on the yatra to pakistan will testify to the deep love of the Sikh faith that the sindhis have. They can be seen doing sewa in the langar with fevour whereas the sikhs who go from india are usually more interested in doing shopping in the bazaars. After 1947 due to the partition and also the pakistan government's propaganda about the sikhs doing most of the muslim killings in east punjab being a sikh in pakistan was dangerous. Therefore a majority of the non-muslim sindhis choose to be indentified as hindus.

BTW there were 1,276,116 hindus in pakistan in 1981. 1,221,961 were sindhis.

kenya -

no census on religion. I estimate about 25,000

Thailand - about 25,000

Afghanistan - (Was 75,000 in 1978)

Few hundreds due to anti sikh policies of taliban

Nepal - 12,000

Probably correct. I have read that the sikhs were the first to start regular bus and goods services in nepal in the 1950's

Bangladesh -

A couple of sewadars at the sikh temples in decca and chittagong also some indian embassy staff

Indonesia -

About 5,000 mostly small businessmen in and around jakarta. Although during the anti-govt. riots a couple of years ago I did notice that a sikh with a turban was sitting in the national assembly in a news report.

Australia - 100,000

In 1996 census about 12,100 sikhs were counted. There has been a lot of migration of Sikh professionals into australia. In 1991 the sikh population was 7,775. There are probably 20,000 sikhs in australia at the moment

New Zealand - 6,000

In 1996 2800 sikhs were counted in the census.

Germany -

Due to the current sikh independence struggle a large number of sikhs have been granted political asylum and there are at least 15 gurdwaras in germany. There are probably about 15,000 in germany.

Can anyone update, correct and provide the requested information.

Sat Sri akal.

You may wish to know the sikh population in the following countries which are estimates from different sources

Europe

France about 2500 mainly political refugees

Italy about 1000

Greece about 1000

Switzerland about 400

Norway, Sweden, denmark and finland combined about 5000

Russia and former eastern bloc about 500

Belgium and holland 1500

Americas

Mexico about 1000. There was a report about the sikhs of mexico mainly native mexicans converted to sikhism during the tercentenary celebrations

Rest of south america

There have been reports from travel writers and newspaper correspondents about a number of sikhs in venezuela, colombia, panama, brazil, nicaragua etc who are successful businessmen owning mainly hotels

Asia

Burma

There was a large sikh population in burma before the 2nd world war. In 1931 there were over 10,000 sikhs in burma. After the japanese invasion and the british retreat a majority of sikhs left for india. After 1945 some came back but due to the oppressive military government some have moved to thailand and malaysia. There are probably about 5,000 left in burma.

Iran

Sikhs migrated to iran in the 1920's and set up small businesses there. After 1979 and the fall of the shah some moved out of iran. During the last few years there sikhs have started to trickle back to india due to the crumbling economy and hyperinflation in iran. There are probably about 12,000 sikhs in iran.

Hong Kong

About 5,000 live in HK. Most are traders and descendents of the sikhs who worked in the HK police force.

Phillipines

About 3000 sikhs live mainly in manila. They work as small time loan dealers.

Fiji

In the 1986 census there were 4,674 sikhs in fiji. In 1996 there were about 5424

Middle East

There are large numbers of sikhs working in the oil rich middle eastern countries. UAE, Saudi arabia and kuwait contain many sikhs. There are probably about 50,000 sikhs in these countries.

If you need any other info let me know.

Bikramjit

Dear Bikramjit

good that you mention the number of siikhs but these figures only tell how many self proclaimed sikhs are their .

can u tell me how many among them be classified as turban wearing or cutsurds, how many among them know the names of 10 guru , how many drink alchohol, how many smoke and how many are not corrupt ...

what would that figure look like, and if you filter among them who know first 5 pauri of japji sahib than what would it look like and if you r looking for amrit dharis than better not write the numbers and how many among those amrit dhari are true sikhs of guru gobind singh .

but still we must say the flame is still alive...

guru gobind singh said "sawa lakh se ek ladaun" , so if sikhs cant win i think the number is less than 960 million /1.25 lakh , so you need just 7680 true sikhs of guru gobind singh.

a workable figure
