Baptized Sikh killed in Punjab clash, murder case registered; accused admitted to PGI

BHARAT KHANNA / TNN / Mar 7, 2023, 18:35 IST

PATIALA: A baptized Sikh was killed allegedly with a sharp-edged weapon in a clash at the ongoing three-day Hola Mohalla in Anandpur Sahib in Punjab's Rupnagar district on Tuesday.

The police, who registered a case at Anandpur Sahib, have identified the main accused who was admitted to PGI Chandigarh after his fingers were allegedly chopped off in the clash.

The police said that the deceased — identified as Pardeep Singh of Gajikot village of Gurdaspur district — was not a Nihang Sikh as being spread over social media but he had worn the dress code of Nihangs, which is commonly seen during Hola Mohalla.

A permanent resident (PR) of Canada, Pardeep had been staying in Punjab for the past two–three months and had come to Anandpur Sahib to pay obeisance during the Hola Mohalla festival, police said.

The clash, according to police, had taken between two persons, including Pardeep Singh and Niranjan Singh of Nurpur Bedi.
The police, however, guessed that five to seven people were allegedly involved in the clash.

“The clash took place at 10.30pm on Monday night near Baddal gate in Anandpur Sahib following which fingers of Niranjan were chopped while Pardeep got injuries below his ribs and later succumbed to injuries. There were some other people also present and might be involved in the clash but we are investigating the matter," said senior superintendent of police Viveksheel Soni.

"The identified accused has been admitted to PGI Chandigarh and is undergoing treatment but the police teams have been deployed there for his arrest as soon he gets discharged or becomes stable. We have confiscated Thar jeep of the accused. It is not clear what led to the heated arguments between the duo which led to clash," he said.
The SSP added that around 3,500 security personnel were deployed and 110 cameras were installed at Hola Mohalla to keep a round-the-clock vigil for safety of devotees.
Anandpur Sahib DSP Ajay Singh said that further investigation was going on in the matter and the body will be handed over to the family after the post-mortem.
He said that the number of injuries and cause of death will be cleared after the post-mortem is carried out.

The case of murder and common intention was registered.

A video of the incident had also gone viral in which Pardeep (deceased) is seen falling down after being injured while a group of Sikhs are seen around him whereas a stone also hit Pardeep's body from back after he fell down.

In another viral video, a group of Nihang Sikhs are seen hitting some bikers for alleged hooliganism and making noise through their modified bike silencers.
