They have not only broken the centuries- old tradition, but have a set a new path for society that has disliked the birth of the girl child since times immemorial. Last evening, they collectively celebrated the Lohri of all baby girls who had born in the village during the past one year. They also organised a block- level seminar to highlight the importance of girls and women in society. The village panchayat led by the woman Sarpanch, Mrs Harjit Kaur, played host to the celebrations. Since ages, in Punjabi society, Lohri is celebrated only for male children. But Manhera village has reversed this trend that has been criticised the world over for the falling female sex ratio. Punjab has earned the dubious distinction of " Kuri maaran da desh" ( a state of girl killers). Lohri is celebrated only by the Punjabis. Special sort of sweets are distributed to celebrate the birth of male children on the occasion . Beast Posted January 15, 2004 Report Share Posted January 15, 2004 I used to think that it was well sexist as well, until a friend told me abt another way of looking at it. A girl born into a family does not belong to that family, when she is older she will go away to live with her husband. But for all the years up to her wedding she brings warmth and love (shaanti) to a household. In fact she is the very life and soul of the family. But then one day she will have to leave. So when a girl is born we shud be sad that one day her family will have to give her away to someone else. In a sense she doesn't even belong to the family that she is born into, they are just looking after her until she leaves the household. And when she leaves there will be a massive void left from all the warmth and happiness she carried with her. And thats why (theoretically!) parents aren't as happy as when a boy is born. Also, a boy being born means that in the future a girl will also join the family (unless the boy is gay, then u got problems :shock: ); hence more reason for happiness. So remember girls, we are sad coz in the future we got to give u away to someone else. :cry: Of course, this only works if u are pundufied. If u are a modern kurri then making the boy leave his house and come and live with u is always an option. I'm up 4 that, as long as the girl is fit and stinkin rich!!
