I have read and know of the story of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji's sacrifice and martyrdom, but I am unsure exactly of the extent of the sacrifice. Did Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji effectively save the Hindu religion in India?

If Guru had not sacrificed his life, does that mean Hindu religion would not be in existence any more?

Yes you got it right. Let me rephrase that above "If Guru had not sacrificed his life for hind dharma, there would be no hindu dharma in india".

Thats why guroo maharaj is called "Hind Di Chaadar"

Guru ji said that if they would convert so would the rest of the hindu race. they agreed to this and would have done so if guru ji converted. so effectively the answer is yes that without guru jis sacrifice that religion would no longer exist

My only personal view, and is something I need to research more, is that Guru ji was well aware that the plight not of Hindus, but of Kashmiri Shaivism (Trika) was at stake, a very distinct form of shaivism.
