SGPC, Baba Budha Dal at loggerheads over gurdwara

Kotkapura, September 21

Tension prevailed at the historic Gurdwara Patshahi Dasvi yesterday when a 10-member committee of the SGPC reached here to take control of it. A large number of nihangs belonging to the Baba Budha Dal armed with sharpedged weapons gathered at the gurdwara, forcing the SGPC team to return empty-handed.

Sources said the gurdwara was built in 1937 by the Maharaja of Faridkot, who handed it over to Baba Budha Dal in 1947. The gurdwara, which owes its historical background to a visit by Guru Gobind Singh, has about 172 acres in its name. The controversy over the gurdwara dates back to 1960. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had empowered the SGPC in 2003 to take over the charge of gurdwara.

Following the court orders, an SGPC panel, led by Ajaib Singh reached the gurdwara yesterday, but about 300 nihangs descended there, leading to the tension.

The SGPC members said they wanted to take the charge of the gurdwara with the help of the district administration. The local administration expressed helplessness as police personnel had been deployed at the ongoing Baba Farid Mela in Faridkot.

When contacted, Baba Kulwant Singh, in charge of the gurdwara, said Baba Budha Dal was looking after the gurdwara for the last 57 years and the question of handing over its charge to the SGPC doesn’t arise.
