sleep little and eat little

Sukhi

Recommended Posts

i just saw Amrik's post in Neo's thread where he quoted Bhai Gurdas Ji.

An Ideal Sikh - Bhai Gurdass Ji

I pay homage to the one who sleeps little and eats little.

i understood all the other things Bhai Gurdas Ji describes as qualities of an ideal sikh. but i didn't understand the relevance of sleeping and eating little.

this isn't the only place where i've seen something like this. i was just wondering if someone could explain why it's significant to sleep or eat little.

The Sikh way of life.

At dawn, the Sikh wakes up and practices meditation, charity and purity.

He is soft spoken, humble, benevolent and feels grateful to any others who accept his help.

He sleeps little, eats little, and speaks little, and adopts the Guru’s teaching.

He makes a living through honest labour and gives to charity, and though respected he does not think highly of himself.

He joins the congregation both morning and evening, and participates in hymn singing.

He links his mind to the spirit of Gurbani, and feels grateful to the Guru.

His spontaneous devotion is self-less, for it is inspired by the sheer love of the Guru.

hmmm... incidentally, less food also means less energy for the brain to think with.

but tha's kinda dangerous because the more sleep and energy deprived you are, the more likely you are to make mistakes while working, driving and doing tests...

and can someone explain the "feeling more zen" thing to me please?...

i think the hunger dies off when u have attached yourself to waheguru because he's the only real source of food you'll ever really need ( dont starve yahself either, its fasting :P ), but i cant remember which sant it was but he ate very little food which i read in some book, another thing is which bhai gurdass is probably pointing out is you should be careful how much u eat, u don't wonna end up on Celebrity Fit Club ( andy's foremans losing abit! :) ), being overweight can be a problem

talking about sleeping too much, i think a person gets abit too lazy, when every time I go to sleep till 10 or 11.....when i get up my head deosn't feel well and i feel really low in energy.........so i set my clock to get up at an earlier time

Ive got quotes on bhai gurdass jis vars in this fantastic book (better than the internet) ive got, ill be posting alot more, what he's says in his writings is a real eye opener

I would agree that its a message of moderation.

Sleeping little is prescribed in order that one would be able to observe Amrit Vela to do their Nitnem and Simran. (goes without saying that i dont do that LOL)

Eating Little is to do with keeping the body fit and not overindulging. We've all seen the uncles/aunties who do the L.A Takedown on 4 or 5 supersized alloo vaale paronthe with extra butter and then knock out to "aid digestion" lol. (to be fair i dont do that either :P )

I really think its as simple as that. Dont let urself go physically and dont be lazy.

Also, i think its to do with being able to sit relatively still for long periods while you do Simran etc.. Contrary to popular beleif, ur body needs to be in really good shape to be able to sit for extended periods. Thats one thing Yogis have got locked down from thousands of years of their experience. But thats another story.

how about having a different interpretation of it

sleep little could mean, dont have deep sleeps for 8 hours in a row, instead have small naps, and rather then indulging in loads of food at once, have small portions of good food

in response to iron bangle.... and trying to assume that we shall keep in line saying that sikhi and science are very parrallell..there are studies that have been conducte that say that those whon take naps during the day are those who will have lung diseeases (e.g asthma....etc)...so i doubt that would be it.

actually, naps during the day aren't considered good for your general overall sleeping habits. simply because it reduces your quality of sleep at night, which is far more important than your nap. so really speaking, if we're talking about sleeping little, you're better off doing 6 hours a night rather than 3 hours at night and 3 hours in the afternoon.
