Premiership footballer Jermaine Pennant has been jailed for three months for drink-driving while banned from the road.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who is on loan from Arsenal at Birmingham City, has also been disqualified from driving for three years.

And Pennant has been denied bail because the Crown Court is to hear the appeal against sentence quickly.

Last month the Premiership midfielder pleaded guilty to charges of drink-driving, driving while disqualified and using a vehicle without insurance.

He was arrested in January after he was spotted in a car park in Aylesbury driving a Mercedes with a lamp post dragging beneath it.

When sentencing the former England Under-21 star at Aylesbury Magistrates' Court, chairman of magistrates John Jakobi told him there was no reasonable excuse for the journey.

Birmingham City will now discuss Pennant's future with his club Arsenal and the St Andrews club's website said: "We are extremely disappointed with the news that Jermaine Pennant has been given a custodial sentence. We will now be speaking to Arsenal about the future of their player."
