At least 200 people were arrested Friday night as rioting continued in poor Paris neighbourhoods and extended to mainly immigrant-dominated neighbourhoods in several other cities. Police officers investigate the wreckage of some of the 27 city buses burned by youths, Trappes, west of Paris, Friday, Nov. 4.(AP Photo/Remy de la Mauviniere) Officials say as many as 750 vehicles were set on fire by roving groups of young men and boys carrying out hit-and-run arson attacks in Paris, Toulouse, Nice, Marseille, Strasbourg, Rennes and other cities. It was the ninth straight night of violence in the rundown Paris suburbs. Government appeals for calm are being ignored as copy-cat attacks grow in number. The trouble began last week when two teenagers were electrocuted at a power sub-station in Clichy-sous-Bois, north of Paris. Local youths allege the pair were being pursued by police, a charge officials deny. A 56-year-old physically disabled woman was being treated in the burn unit of a Paris hospital on Friday after the bus she was travelling in was set ablaze by youths in the northern Paris suburb of Sevran. Rioters also burned down a nursery school in Acheres, west of Paris. palm_w1 Posted November 6, 2005 Report Share Posted November 6, 2005 From personal experience i think that under the gloss france is a deeply prejudiced society. Rather than accepting people can have differences they try and make everyone conform to the french establishments view of what a 'french' person should be. However not everyone can conform to being a white christian, no matter how integrated they become. Until the french govt tries to overcome the prejudices of 'white' france rather than just paying lip service to anti racism this problem will not go away. The french police are quite possibly the most racist police in europe (after greece), it is well known the having non - white skin means u will be asked for your papers all the time. You can only push people so far before they crack. Until the deep seated prejudices and xenophobia within french society is dealt with, and wealth distribution made fairer there will always be people ready to riot at any excuse. p.s. out of interest, a question to the canadians, how tolerant are the french areas of canada? 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
vijaydeep Singh Posted November 8, 2005 Report Share Posted November 8, 2005 Gurfateh Das feels that it was wrong thing simiering the the minds of present day rioters which made native of france anti to outsiders which lead to Ban on Turban in Schools.
