To all those who know how,

I was thinking that alot of us in the UK, have a grand dad or great grandad who served in the army during the world wars, are there any resources available to track details of family members who were in the army, like pictures or documents, or just their rank and role, and where about they were during the wars.

If not maybe that would be a good resource to set up, a good community relations project.

maybe something for the UKPHA lot to concider. ?

My Grandfather fought in WW1, and his younger brother fought in WW2. I would like to know more about them if there is any info available online.

This topic still brings to mind at how ungrateful the French nation is that they now deny Sikhs from wearing turbans when so many Sikhs fought with the allies for their freedom. With the present French generation being so ungrateful, I can now understand why their forefathers quietly accepted German supremacy without lifting a finger.

If you're talking about the British Indian Army then pop down to the National Army Museum in Chelsea armed with as much data that you have about your relatives. You will need to know exactly which regiments/batallions they were in and what years and ideally the naem of a commanding officer.

At the NAM, you can get the role calls so you can see which unit they were in and start to build a picture of what that unit did by looking in the regimental histories.

If you're lucky you may find pictures in either th NAM's archives (which are organsied by regiment) or the Imperial War Museum photo archives (a lot f whcih I've catalogued). Pictures were geenrally taken of officers and NCOs rather than the common soldier so its really hit and miss.

If you were talking of the indian army post 1947 then I have no idea

Thanks for that info aman, i'll have a look during this summer.

Will document the process and pass on any info to the cyber sangata, and also see how feasable it would be to create some kind of find your family type site.
