Gurfateh !

ਬੁੰਗੇ, ਬਾਟੇ ਅਤੇ ਬੰਦਸ਼

The alliterative title worked then - it made you view the picture !

Here is a wonderful photograph taken at Amritsar in 1961 by Marilyn Silverstone

It features what seem to be the 3 major preoccupations of Sikh messageboards and forums the 3 Bs of the title - Bungay Baatey and Bandash - in other words Nihangs (Bungay), Sarbloh, be it Shastar or sarbloh 'bibek'/rehat (Baatey) and Raag & Tanti saaj (Bandash)

Enjoy the picture its beautiful !

LOL, T Singh, West Indian steel drums, an offshoot of Nihang percussion resourcefulness!!

Budda Daal have also subcomb to vajaa culture, although there are a few exponents of Sitar as shown above and vocal classical using Tanpura etc. I have never come across Nihangs using Guru's tanti saaj.

In the old days kirtan played a big part in all Sikhs lives, Sardar Jassa Singh Aluvalia used to do kirtan, namely Asa di Vaar every morning, and legendary Bhai Sukha Singh is also said to have done kirtan.

The most famous Nihang Kirtan in recent times was Bhai Balbir Singhs (ex hazuri Raagi) brother.

There did used to be a Nihang kirtan school called Budda Jor, but not sure if it still exists.

I was thinking how similar upside down battas look to a gamelan set up! NOt quite the same sound I guess. I like that other old photo of the WW2 soldiers in a french village (maybe can't remember) doing kirtan and one of them tapping a glass with a spoon. Some old Sants like Bhai Adhan Shah (I think) used to go around with a tumbi.
