  1. Australia Seeks To Recognize 1984 Anti-Sikh Violence In India As 'Genocide'

The Australian parliament has tabled a petition calling for the recognition of anti-Sikh riots that erupted in India in November 1984 as a 'genocide.'

At least 37,000 Sikhs were murdered in New Delhi and other parts of India in the wake of the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards. Hundreds of thousands more were displaced by the unrest.Gandhi was killed in retaliation for the storming by government troops of the Golden Temple in Amritsar earlier that year to flush out Sikh separatists.

The petition, which was introduced in the Canberra parliament by MP Warren Enstch, chief opposition whip for the Liberal Party, on Thursday, has already been signed by more than 4000 people.

"It is important to note that today, Nov 1, is 28 years to the day that these attacks took place," Enstch read from the petition.

"And as long as they continue to be referred to as 'anti-Sikh riots' there can be no closure for the Sikh community. Discussions around mass violence and genocide will always be controversial but the continued denial of such historical injustices can only encourage modern day crimes against humanity."

The petition requested the Australian government to apply pressure on India to enact "all reasonable measures" to prosecute all those who were involved in the anti-Sikh violence.

After 28 years, no one has ever been convicted of the killings, despite reports that members of the ruling Congress Party had incited crowds to take vengeance on Sikhs, suggesting a planned, organized campaign.

Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), an international human rights group, supported the petition.

“Every person on this planet who believes in equality and peace for mankind should support this,” said Daljit Singh, a Sikh- Australian who first raised the subject with Entsch.

    “Justice delayed is justice denied.”

Entsch explained why he decided to table the petition.

“What drove me to act in particular was that the United Nations and world leaders – including the Australian Parliament in February this year – have recognized an act of genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia, in 1995, when 7000 men and boys were massacred due to their Muslim faith,” he said in a statement.

“I thought to myself, if something of that nature could be recognized so quickly by the world community, it seems unreasonable that the Sikh community has had to wait for so long. I hope this step will serve to raise awareness, and maybe one day there will be the same level of justice for the Sikh community as for the other groups that have been recognized.”

Australia currently has a community of some 100,000 Sikhs.

JALANDHAR : Stating that the grant of Rs 5 lakhs compensation to victims of November 1984, Delhi anti-Sikh riots cannot substitute "Prosecution of 1984 Genocide Perpetrators", US based rights group Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) has announced to hold a gathering before the United Nations Headquarters, New York to highlight the denial of justice.

"Sikhs from North America and victims and survivors of the massacre will converge on UN headquarters on November 7, the 30th anniversary of worse massacre of independent India, to highlight the denial of justice and continuous impunity to Indian political leaders involved in the genocidal violence against the Sikh community," said SFJ legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh Pannun .

"A report will be submitted to Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations highlighting the failure of the international body to recognize the 1984 anti -Sikh violence as "Genocide" and the failure of the UN in investigating the systematic killings of Sikhs, a religious minority in India," he said.

  4. This perhaps tells us why hinduism is different from sikhism. In sikhism we can communicate and invoke God directly. Hindus on the other hand have to go through lesser gods and goddesses to speak with God. This is what I had to do as an exchristian.

Good video Martin Holland. Hinduism is full of superstitions. Watch this and decide for yourself.

This service can cost you a lot of money sometimes.

  5. Can you tell us why India has not been able to combat these incidents which are becoming so common there? Whose fault is it if the Indian police is corrupt? Why is the victim blamed for this? You just want to pass the buck and not take responsiblity for all the evils that are present in your society. There is no use in showing off about your few achievements when such major crime is an everyday occurrence in India. Shame on India.

Sir, madam, I do'nt know every answers, rich say India is rich but the poor people which suffer all the time. If rich persons do crime give bribe to police they not get punishment if the poor do crime they beaten by police and taken to jail to get punished. there is no value of a human life in India. It is only rich they run this country and poor not educated properly. Also many Indian peoples want to leave to live in foreign countrys because they get treated very bad in India. Too many rich peoples drive big cars also think they are very special and don't take notice of poor peoples. Indian people not same like westarn people, Indians do'nt like poor peoples rich peoples they always treat us like their shoes. pls also see satyamev jayate on T.v.
