  1. Brother Vijaydeep Singh Ji, there is difference between BATTLE and RIOTS. 1947's riots are a big black spot on face India and Pakistan. Those riots were acts of cowards. Killing helpless and unarmed people is a shame. Thousands of women (Hindu, Sikh and Muslim women) were raped, kidnapped and killed during those riots. Please provide us details who were those coward people, who took part in "Ethnic cleansing in Indian Punjab". Also, please explain how these people were different to those who took part in "Ethnic cleansing in PAKISTANI Punjab, Sindh, Sooba Sarhad and Pak Occupied Kashmir".

    Warm Regards.

  2. At last. Yes, at last the accused got the punishment. It took eleven years, but at last late Priyadarshini Mattoo got justice.

"He does not deserve to be pardoned. This is rarest of the rare cases," Justice R S Sodhi and Justice P K Bhasin said in their judgment.

And why should he be pardoned? Only because he was a son of a top IPS officer, when he allegedly raped and killed Priyadarshini Mattoo, a Delhi University law student, eleven years ago?

Definitely, the accused, Santosh Kumar Singh, will challenge the judgment of the High Court in the Supreme Court, but as the High Court said, “He does not deserve to be pardonedâ€.

  3. The novel 'Tamas' is a great novel on Indo-Pak Partition. A tele serial was made on this novel and was very successful serial. Though a few groups objected on a few scenes in the serial, general Indians liked it very much. Amrish Puri as a Sikh character was looking great in the serial.

Killing the unborn daughter — II

    Son fixation drives families mad

    Gayatri Rajwade

    Tribune News Service

    Patiala, September 14

Deviki Rana (name changed) is a housewife in Patiala. The mother of a seven year-old, she is a postgraduate in psychology and reasonably rich but does not have the freedom to have another daughter. She has already undergone four abortions because the foetuses were female. She has developed hypertension and is finding it difficult to conceive again.

Contrary to popular belief, the ignominy of killing the unborn daughter is not restricted to rural areas. It is in the urban areas where hospitals and clinics offer services like sex-determination, abortion and even sex-selection that the inglorious practice thrives.

With sex-determination costing between Rs 1000 and Rs 5000 and an abortion, between Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000, it is those who have the means who indulge in their preference for a boy-child.

According to Dr Varinder Singh Mohi, CMO, Patiala, of the 10 MTP (Medical Termination of Pregnancy) centres, cases have been registered against seven and that too in just one year.

And that is why Patran, near Patiala, assumes significance. The Sahib Singh ‘hospital’ where the foeticide dumping case occurred, stands on the main road that leads to the town. The pit in front where the foetuses were found buried has been covered with fresh earth. ‘Whistleblower’ Pooja Rani, is staying behind the ‘hospital’ where the second ‘foetus-dumping’ well stands. She talks of how the patients used to be called in after midnight for abortions and how midwives brought patients on a “commission†basis.

Ask Dr Mohi how ‘quacks’ like Pritam Singh flourish in the system and he puts it down to the fact that MBBS doctors are not willing to work in rural areas. “Healthcare is left to the midwives or these ‘quacks’ posing as doctors. Sometimes when we have gone on raids, the villagers come out in large numbers to protect their ‘doctor’.â€

The absurdity is that, in the long run, Patran will add up to just another statistic against the unborn girl. Patiala has the second lowest sex ratio in Punjab, after Fatehgarh Sahib. In 1991, the child sex ratio for the district was 871:1000. Ten years later, in 2001, this figure fell drastically to 777 girls for every 1000 boys.

The Patran incident has certainly focused the spotlight on the need for action. According to Dr Mohi, Punjab Health Minister Surinder Singla has already appointed 1100 to 1200 “service providers with a basic MBBS degreeâ€. Over the next one month, the government plans to appoint one ‘service provider’ for every five villages to prevent quacks from assuming responsibility for health of the villagers.

Just six kilometres from Patran is the village of Shutrana, sprawling and untidy. In one part of the village Anganwadi worker Kamla (name changed) says the same thing, people prefer boys to girls.

She goes door-to-door talking to people about the merits of having girls. Everyone nods but no one seems really interested. “People hide their pregnancies till they can determine the sex of the child. They go in for abortions if the child is a girl,†she admits after the round is done. What does she do when she finds out? “I go and speak to them but they get angry and say it is none of my business. They ask me if I will help them in getting the girl married.â€

There are not many girls in Mirzapur village (Rajpura). It has two schools, one primary and another high school. In the first one, a group of boys are clustered outside the building, their arms up in the air, getting punished. More boys line the corridors, sitting cross-legged studying their textbooks. Very few girls can be seen.

At the other school, too, boys outnumber girls. Of the 266 students, there are 154 boys and 112 girls. But these children do not belong only to this village. The school caters to four villages around Mirzapur. Vice-Principal Harpal Singh hopes to change views by relating his experience. “I have two daughters and a son. We tried the third time because we wanted a son but he is mentally challenged. My daughters are wonderful, no less than sons. I really believe we made a mistake and are paying for it like this.â€

Unfortunately, not everyone thinks like the Vice-Principal.

Those families that have only girls have kept ‘ghar-jamais’ (husbands living in the homes of their wives) so that they gain a boy – a practice that seems to be catching on in the rural areas.

In Dharamgarh, near Banur, there were births of nine girls and seven boys but Anganwadi worker Amarpreet Kaur says this does not in any way reflect a change in attitude. “The desire for a boy remains steadfast and because people are poor here they cannot go in for abortions. But dowry is a major issue here and no amount of education will impact this because the environment at home perpetuates the preference for a boy.â€

A perfect example being Devinder Kaur who believes she can finally lift her head high. After four girls, she has had a son — the age difference between her eldest girl and the boy is 18 years.

Even her eldest daughter believes it is necessary to have a son. “I am so happy we finally have a brother,†she beams. “It is all a matter of having someone to tie rakhi on, even more important than education,†says their mother.

The girls were made to stop going to school after the eighth class because their father could not afford to send them. This, despite the fact that the school was willing to pay for their education

Maryada violation: DSGMC panel chief resigns

    Tribune News Service

    Amritsar, September 11

The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has suspended its granthi and blacklisted two Sikh missionaries for violating Sikh maryada of Anand Karaj at Gurdwara Rakab Ganj.

Meanwhile, Mr Tarsem Singh, chairman, Dharam Parchar Committee of the DSGMC, has resigned from his post, owning responsibility of the violation, though according to him he tried his best to prevent the unsavoury situation yesterday .

As per convention, the bridegroom walks ahead of the bride and circumambulates the Guru Granth Sahib amid recitation of hymns. However, in this case two circumambulations were taken in the traditional way while the bride walked ahead of the bridegroom in the remaining two. This led to chaos and the entire wedding party was divided into two warring groups.

However, Mr Tarsem Singh tried to pacify the groups.

The DSGMC has constituted a three-member committee to probe the matter within seven days.

Mr Harwinder Singh Sarna, president, DSGMC, alleged that SAD was behind the violation. However, Mr Parmjit Singh Sarna, former president of the DSGMC, New Delhi, said he would take up the matter with the Jathedar, Akal Takht.

The two missionaries who have been blacklisted are Mr Vir Bhupinder Singh of the USA and Mr Surjit Singh of Gurmat Parchar Sabha. The suspended granthi is Giani Jai Kishan Singh.

Author refuses to appear before Akal Takht

    Tribune News Service

    Amritsar, August 22

Dubai-based writer Jaswinder Singh, author of controversial book “Dasam Granth da Likhari Kaun†(Who is author of Dasam Granth), has refused to appear before the Sikh high priests who recite the “Bani†of Dasam Granth.

Sikh scholar and editor of monthly “Sant Sipahi†G.S. Lamba, who recorded the interview of the controversial writer, today urged the Sikh clergy to take action against Jaswinder Singh, who had refused to accept the authority of the Sikh institutions or drop objectionable material from his book.

The author claimed that he had sent the manuscript to Jathedar Akal Takht, who had failed to point out any mistake.

He, however, offered to delete derogatory words against jathedars from his book.

He said he had administered “Amrit†to more than 10,000 persons but never recited “Jap Sahibâ€, “Sawyas†or “Benti Chaupai†from Dasam Granth at the time of such ceremonies.

Earlier, the Sikh conclave, held in the basement of Akal Takht, had recommended stringent action against the author as per Sikh “maryada†for challenging the authorship of Dasam Granth.

The author had offered a reward of Rs 1 crore for anybody who established that Dasam Granth was authored by Guru Gobind Singh.

Various Sikh organisations, including Nihang factions, Damdami Taksal and jathedars of two Takhts — Hazoor Sahib and Patna Sahib — had also sought strict action against the author for challenging the authenticity of Dasam Granth.

It is pertinent to mention here that the “Bani†of Dasam Granth was being recited at both Takhts outside Punjab.

Some hymns from Dasam Granth are recited in daily “Ardas†and at the time of “Amrit Sancharâ€.

    Graveyard of unborn daughters

Over 100 female foetuses dug out of well near Patiala

    Chander Parkash

    Tribune News Service

    Patran (Patiala), August 9

A mass grave of female foetus was detected today in a vacant plot owned by quacks Pritam Singh, an ex-serviceman and his wife Amarjit Kaur of this town, by a high-level team of state health authorities after it raided the premises of the local Sahib Hospital run by these quacks. They had been allegedly involved in illegal abortions for the past many years.

Residents of this town bordering Haryana, who were quite shocked, took out a march in the city to lodge protest against the anti-social activities of the quack couple. They also demanded that the couple should be given exemplary punishment. They also alleged that though health authorities were aware about illegal happenings that were taking place in the Sahib Hospital for the past many years, but no action was taken by them for the reasons best known to them.

Dr Varinder Singh Mohi, Civil Surgeon, Patiala, who led the raiding team, said it was difficult to tell the exact number of female foetus and placentas recovered from a deep and narrow well, which had been turned into a graveyard for female foetus by the accused, as the remains of placentas and foetus were extremely decomposed. Unconfirmed reports said that their number could cross over hundred.

Information gathered by TNS revealed that district health authorities had been trying to find out the exact number of female foetus, which had been dumped by the quack couple into the well, located in a vacant plot adjacent to their clinic, in the past many years after performing illegal abortions in their triple-storey clinic on the Patiala-Patran main road.

Dr Mohi, while confirming the registration of a criminal case under MTP Act against the quack couple and their subsequent arrest, said that as per a statement by two woman workers of that clinic made before the raiding team, the husband-wife duo had carried out about 35 illegal abortions and subsequently dumped 35 female foetus in that deep well in the past three months.

Not only this, acting swiftly on the situation, the district health authorities, with the help of district administration, also sealed an ultrasound centre located in Samana town, which was carrying out the pre-natal sex determination tests and subsequently sending pregnant women carrying females to Sahib clinic for illegal abortions.

Some instruments, used for carrying out abortions, were also recovered from that centre. A case against the owner of the centre had been registered. Another team had been sent to another ultrasound centre of Dirba town of Sangrur district, which was also allegedly involved in the similar activities.

Mr Rakesh Kumar Verma, Deputy Commissioner, who gave all help to the raiding team, said that the case against the quack couple was being made fool-proof so that it could be taken to logical end.

Information revealed that one of the female workers, who was working in the hospital, spilled the beans after she developed some differences with the quack couple over payment of her salary. She disclosed everything to some prominent citizens, who then reported the matter to the district administration and health authorities.

When a raid was conducted at the clinic, the raiding team came to know that a well located in the vacant plot situated adjacent to the clinic was being used as a dumping ground for the female foetus.

Mr Munish Kumar, SDM, who coordinated the operation, said at first some poisonous gases were removed from the deep and narrow well. Then a trained man was sent inside the well. After about four to five hours, the man, who had gone inside the well, managed to bring some remains of placentas and foetus. Some glass jars, suspected to be containing some material connected with abortions, were also recovered. He added that the Civil Surgeon, Patiala, would be taking appropriate action in this regard.

A woman worker of Sahib hospital identified as Pooja, while talking to TNS said that illegal abortions were being performed on married women only. She added that quack couple had been charging Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000 per case from the persons concerned.

Meanwhile, the remains of placentas and foetus, which had been dug from the well, had been sent to the pathology laboratory at Rajindra Medical College for histopathological examinations to know their exact status.

Official figures revealed that so far the district health authorities had sealed about 12 ultrasound centres for their alleged involvement in conducting the sex determination test of foetus and five clinics, which were involved in carrying out illegal termination of pregnancy in the current year.

  9. I just said Chandu Saahi played a MAJOR role. There could be another reasons as well. Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji did not modify Sri (Guru) Granth Sahib Ji. He did not change basic Sikh principles.

We should read carefully what is written in 'Tuzak-e-Jahangiri. We can reach the conclusion that what is written is not all true. We cannot ignore what is written by old Sikh writers.

I suggest reading Sri Gur Pratap Sooraj Granth where Shahidi of Guru Arjan Dev Ji is mentioned. I have not enough time to translate all the pages, so I am really sorry.

Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji got Chandu from Jahangir and punished him. For more details, read Raas 5th, Ansu 3 of Sri Gur Pratap Sooraj Granth (Jahangir handed Chandu over to Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, Chandu was broght to Lahore city).

I would like to quote here Sri Gur Pratap Sooraj Granth: -

    Tahaan Kahain Mukh Ooch Pukaar.

    "Eh GurDrohi Kai Sir Maar.

    Jo Satgur Ko Sikh Kahaavai.

    Panahi Panch Dusht Ko Laavai".

(Uthhe oh uchhi saari Pukaar ke kenhde han, "Eh {Chandu} GurDrohi de sir vich maaro. Jo koi Satguru Da Sikh Akhvaanda hai, oh is dusht nu panj Juttiaan laavai").

Bhai Jethha Ji was a great Gursikh of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. Now see, how a Sikh felt when they got Chandu. Bhai Jethha Ji was worried that Guru Ji would forgive Chandu. So, Bhai Jethha Ji made sure that Guru Ji did not see Chandu while he was being punished (See Raas 4, Ansu 6, stanza 21-22-23).

Children of Lahore city threw dust on Chandu's head and showed their full 'respect' for Chandu. People put chain around Chandu Saahi's neck and took him like a dog across Lahore city. Chandu 'enjoyed' love of lots of shoes, "Eh Gur Drohi Koor Kupatta. Im Kah Nar Gan Maarat Jutta".

Bhai Jethha Ji wanted to punish Chandu, but Chandu recieved extra shoes, Bhai Jethha Ji tried to stop people who were beating Chandu up. But people said, "Is Ko Maaran Punn Bisaala. Hatan Dehu Ham Ko Is Kaala". (It is a great virtue to beat him up. Let us kill him right now).

But, someone else got the big profit. It was 'Bharhbhoonja', who put hot sand on Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji Maharaj. Don't you believe?

When Bharhbhooja saw Chandu being beaten up by Lahorians, he took his hot 'Karhchha' in his hand and struck to Chandu's stomach. Chandu was kllled on the spot. His body was served to dogs of Lahore.

Was he punished for his 'little' role in Shahaadat of Guru Arjun Dev Ji?

  10. We forget one point. It was Chandu, who was handed over to Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji by Jahangir. It was Chandu, who was beaten up by Sikhs. It was Chandu, who was killed in Lahore for his sin against Guru Arjun Dev Ji. It is a strong point to prove that Chandu played a big role in Shahaadat of Guru Arjun Dev Ji.

All Sikh texts mention Chandu as a main culprit. He has the reason to torture Guru Ji. Sikh texts go in details when describing Shaheedi of Guru Sahib Ji. I have seen tears in my father's eyes, when he used to do 'Katha' of this episode in Sri Gur Pratap Sooraj Granth.

Chandu Saahi was punished by Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji Maharaaj, because he played a major role in Shaheedi of Guru Arjun Dev Ji.
